Do you think the lifestyle of the inhabitants of your city reflects behavior that is in line with sustainable development? In your opinion what should be improved?

By Vanessa Klaric Nsouli

Is North Americas food production (a basic human need) sustainable? Two key questions we need to ask ourselves are:

Not reallyHow is current food production impacting our long term Physical Health? What can we do differently?

1How is current food production impacting our long term Mental Health? What can we do differently?

2

How is current food production in North America impacting our long term Physical Health?1

How is food production in North America (NA) impacting our long term Physical Health?

Food production in NA is controlled by only a few large corporations1The bigger pictureThese few corporations focus on increasing yields & reducing costs to stay competitive1

Antibiotics, Hormones,Pesticides are used in livestock to increase yields1

Other Chemicals are used to reduce costs in food storage2 PreservativesPackaging food in plastics instead of glass

1950s TODAY 1950s TODAY So What?

Antibiotics HormonesPesticidesHow is food production in North America (NA) impacting our long term Physical Health? What are the health implications of these food additives? The overuse of Antibiotics has resulted in resistant bacteria strains; making us more prone to diseases with no cures3Other Chemicals(e.g. BPA, Preservatives) many chemicals used in food packaging in NA do not even have toxicology reports9

Hormones in our food can lead to hormone imbalances; sometimes even infertility & breast cancer4

Some Pesticides have been linked to problems in the brain development of children; sometimes autism5

Two Examples:BPA (used in the lining of cans) is known to cause cancer6Preservatives have been linked to IBS7, heart disease & diabetes8 The Unknowns-Food packaging chemicals are exempt from FDA food labeling requirements as they are not physically added to the food9The lack of transparency-Chemicals NOT allowed in Europe/China are still allowed to be used in goods in NA2

Antibiotics HormonesPesticidesHow is food production in North America (NA) impacting our long term Physical Health? What can we do differently as consumers?Other ChemicalsPurchase organic and locally grown foods!Support local farmers simultaneously

BUT, organic food & farmers market food is usually a lot more expensive.10 What should we do?We are actually saving in our future health expenses as our health will improve! To mitigate the current added expense we can share the cost with friends & family! How?Purchase goods from large supermarkets less often as they usually carry goods contaminated with the mentioned chemicals1Find a way to share the extra portions of food we cook!

How is current food production in North America impacting our long term Mental Health?2

What does our Mental Health depend on?GENETIC- Some people are born happier than othersINTENTIONAL BEHAVIOR- What you do for others and yourself (Community Sense)CIRCUMSTANCES- e.g. Career & HealthSo, WHY is 10% of the American population Depressed12?How is food production in North America (NA) impacting our long term Mental Health? This is where we have the MOST control!

So, 40% of our HAPPINESS is at risk; and remember this is the percentage we have the most control ofOur sense of community is on a downhill11 Is this a global problem? How is food production in North America (NA) impacting our long term Mental Health? Why is depression so widespread in NA?

In FRANCE, children have a 2hr school lunch break; where they are educated on healthy eating while they socialize.13 The French Education Ministry has set a 30min minimum requirement for children to sit at the table.13In DENMARK, single parents have formed communities where families take turns making dinner for the entire community. Denmark was voted the happiest country on earth! 11

How is food production in North America (NA) impacting our long term Mental Health? Is the sense of community decreasing around the world as quickly as it is in NA? NO

In North America, individual size meals (either in the fast-food or frozen-food form) are vastly available. Most people in NA consume these types of meals on a daily basis15It is usually these types of food that also contain the highest concentration of the chemicals mentioned previously2

How is food production in North America (NA) impacting our long term Mental Health? What can we do differently as community members? In summary, share meals with your family, friends, neighbor!

Being part of a strong community contributes to what makes up 40% of our HAPPINESSTeach our children to eat healthy while socializingParticipate in &/or organize community dinnersTake the time to make a meal and share it with someoneBuild a strong sense of community! HOW?
