INTRODUCTION Fungi are ubiquitous in the aquatic and

terrestrial environments. Unicellular yeasts, polymorphic and

filamentous fungi, and as both free-living and symbiotic forms.

BASIDIOMYCETES

The Basidiomycota is the second largest phylum of Kingdom Fungi, with approximately 23,000 species (Hawksworth et al. 1995), including many of the common macroscopic forest fungi (e.g., mushrooms, shelf fungi). The group is characterized by having meiospores (basidiospores) that are produced on clubshaped cells or basidia

BASIDIOMYCETES ARE DIVIDED INTO TWO SUB-CLASSES;

Heterobasidiomycetidae: the basidium is either septate or deeply divided and the basidiospores are capable of germinating by repetition. These include the rusts, the smuts and the jelly fungi. Examples:

i) Tremellales ii) Tremellaceae iii) Auriculariaceae

Homobasidiomycetidae: the basidium in neither septate nor deeply divides and the basidio-spores usually germinate by a germ tube. The Fungi included in this sub-class are very common and are generally known as mushrooms, toadstools, puffballs, stinkhorn, bird's-nest fungi and bracket fungi bracket fungi
