The firmware automatically detects the installed hardware and activates the appro-priate expert system analysis. IDD’s versatile design allows easy hardware and software upgrades in the field.

The alphanumeric display shows the highest level alert issued by the expert system. For detailed measurement, the IDD can be accessed via a local PC via an RS-232 port. A standard web browser is the only application required for viewing alerts and data, as well as configuring the IDD. The same functionality is also offered with the remote communication options. The IDD can be configured to display its web pages in the local language. Contact Doble for more information about which languages are currently available.

The IDD is designed to operate reliably under extreme weather conditions and electrical interference. The self-diagnostic continuously tracks the condition of the unit and issues an alert if an abnormality is detected.

The Doble DifferenceContinuous online diagnostic assessment of critical apparatus can help ensure optimal asset utilization by identifying the most appropriate and cost-effective corrective action.

With more than 80 years of high voltage apparatus expertise, Doble has designed and engineered the IDD with a built-in expert diagnostic system. The expert system, when appropriate, will issue a prioritized alert. The alert identifies any abnormalities in the apparatus and indicates the severity along with required corrective action. Alerts are classified in three categories: information, warning, and action. Action is the highest level of alert, requiring an immediate corrective response.

Built-in hardware and software diagnostics continuously monitor the IDD and the associated sensors to verify proper installation and functionality, making the IDD virtually maintenance-free. Indication of a problem is provided locally as well as remotely.

The IDD provides a Maintenance Mode feature, which allows the analysis to be placed on standby when the apparatus is out of service. This feature ensures the integrity of the analysis and prevents unnecessary alerts.

ProtocolCommunication with the IDD is viewable through any web browser and is accessible locally over the RS232 port or remotely through the Ethernet Modem, RS485, or RS232 connections. No additional software is required.

IntroductionThe IDD, Intelligent Diagnostic Device for Bushings and CTs, is a revolutionary online diagnostic package that continuously monitors bushings and CTs. The IDD, with its field-proven embedded expert system, will detect abnormalities in the insulation system and, when appropriate, will issue alerts. The IDD will display alerts locally and remotely. There are hundreds of installations around the world relying on this expert system to identify impending problems. Most importantly, the IDD keeps asset managers up to date on the condition of their bushings, providing them lead time to determine the appropriate corrective action.

DescriptionThe IDD, Intelligent Diagnostic Device for Bushings and CTs, is a cost-effective solution to continually evaluate the condition of bushings and CTs while in service. The conditions of the bushings and CTs are evaluated by monitoring the leakage currents measured at each tap. The analysis requires monitoring all bushings or CTs in a three-phase set. One IDD can monitor up to four sets of bushings (2 sets of CTs) associated with the same apparatus.

Tap adapters specifically designed for the particular bushing/CT are mounted to the tap, allowing the IDD to measure the leakage current.

Bushing and CT AnalysisBushings and CTs are evaluated by mea-suring the individual leakage current, one from each phase of a three-phase system. With one of the bushings as reference, the three phasor values of the rap currents are extracted. A process of superposition is then applied to quantify a change in an individual tap with respect to the other two bushings. This information is then applied to three trending periods to establish the normal-ized capacitance and power factor of the individual bushing/CT. This is then used by the analysis to assess the condition of the three bushings. Once a change that warrants attention is detected, the expert system will identify the specific bushing or CT that is experiencing the problem and suggest ap-propriate action.

Bushing and CT Tap AdaptersTap adapters are specific to manufacturer, type, and volt-age class. Doble has developed a number of adapters for the most commonly used bushing and CT types. If a particular adapter is not currently available, Doble will develop an adapter to meet a specific need.

Protection for Bushing and CT TapsMost bushings and CTs are designed with the tap grounded while in service. The grounding of the tap is usually achieved through the tap cap. On an IDD installation, the tap cap is replaced with an IDD bush-ing adapter, and the grounding of the tap is maintained through the IDD.

There are features designed into the IDD tap adapters to prevent a voltage from developing on the tap should the sensor become dis-connected from the IDD. The tap protection consists of:

• Two redundant voltage limiters (13V peak maximum), under normal operating condi-tions.

• Surge suppression circuit, which includes

surge arrestors and a 1500 Vac spark gap.

InstallationThe installation is very straightforward:

1. Mount the tap adapter to the bushing or CT tap.

2. Connect 20 AWG shield wire between the tap adapters and IDD.

3. Connect IDD to substation power source (AC/DC).

4. Connect PC to IDD and configure the IDD.

5. The IDD is now fully operational.

Continuous DiagnosticsThe IDD is designed to operate reliably under extreme weather conditions and electrical interference. The self-diagnostic continuously tracks the condition of the unit and issues an alert if an abnormality is detected

IntroductionAssessing the moisture content in insulation is a key factor to ensure the reliability and longevity of a transformer. The moisture content in oil is continuously changing, and could have adverse effects mostly on quality. The majority of the moisture resides in the paper. It is essential to know the amount of moisture in the solid insulation to determine the short and long term health of the transformer. The IDD for Moisture reliably evaluates the moisture concentration in both the oil and paper.

Why Monitor Moisture?Moisture affects the dielectric breakdown strength of solid and liquid insulation, affects the rate the cellulose insulation ages, and the propensity for bubble evolution during overloads. Ambient temperature, loading, aging, leaks and other factors cause the level of moisture to change continuously. The need for continuous monitoring and diagnostics increases as the transformer temperature cycles. This is especially true for transformers that are overloaded or peak loaded.

IDD for Moisture Features• Continuous Assessment – the IDD for Moisture takes moisture and temperature measure-

ments, calculating water concentration, interpreting the data, and sending notifications of impending problems.

• Diagnoses Severity of Problems – the “Doble Expert System” calculates the dielectric break-down strength of the insulating fluid. A series of alerts are issued, starting with early warn-ings to identify impending serious problems.

• Assesses the Moisture Content of the Entire Insulation System- in addition to measuring the moisture in oil, IDD for Moisture estimates the water content of the paper. As a result, changes can be tracked to detect a situation where water vapor bubbles could form dur-ing overloads.

• Detailed Alert Messages- when there is a problem, alert messages warn of serious decreas-es of dielectric strength, the percentage decreased in dielectric strength of the insulating fluid, the moisture content and temperature, and recommended corrective action.

• Stable Calibration- the stability of the DOMINO® sensor and self–diagnostics of the IDD for Moisture ensure accurate and reliable system diagnostics.

The IDD for

Moisture providesa true assessment

of the moistureconcentration inboth transformer

oil and paper

• Immune to Interference- the performance of DOMINO and IDD for Moisture are not affected by electrostatic and electromagnetic interfer-ence as experienced in nor-mal substation operations.

IDD On-line Moisture DiagnosticsDoble’s Moisture in Oil sensor, DOMINO, measures the relative saturation and temperature of the insulating fluid and calculates the moisture concentration in parts per million. The DOMINO’s stainless steel probe is placed directly into the insulating fluid through an access point on the transformer wall, typically a sampling or drain valve. Every 60 minutes, the IDD for Moisture polls the DOMINO for data. With the information from DOMINO, the IDD for Moisture establishes if the transformer is close to a state of equilibrium. The IDD for Moisture estimates the moisture concentration in paper and the average moisture concentration over time. The IDD for Moisture also tracks the dielectric breakdown strength and stores this hourly recording for 30 days. The daily averages are stored for 300 days. Alerts are issued when the estimated loss of dielectric breakdown is excessive due to a significant amount of moisture. The IDD for Moisture combines the monitoring capability of the Doble Moisture in Oil sensor (DOMINO) measuring the moisture in the insulating fluid, with the data processing capac-ity of the IDD to calculate the water content in the transformer. This provides a diagnostic package that will accurately assess if your transformer needs maintenance or is at risk due to excessive moisture.

The IDD for Moisture allows users to combine the measuring capability of an on-line Moisture in Oil sensor with a comprehensive diagnostic system. The resulting diagnostic system provides early detection of problems and information for determining when maintenance is truly required. One IDD can support multiple applications of analysis. A single IDD can be used to analyze data on Bushings, DGA, and Moisture.

IDD®

IDD® IntellIgent DIagnostIc DevIce for DIssolveD gas In oIl analysIs (Dga)

IntroductionThe industry has come to rely on dissolved gas analysis to assess the condition of oil filled transformers. It’s so effective that some utilities employ on-line monitors to continuously measure the gas content in their transformers’ insulation fluid. Yet on-line monitors pro-vide just part of the solution needed to insure reliable operation; the data still needs to be reviewed by an expert to analyze its meaning. The IDD for DGA provides the ideal solution for complete on-line dissolved gas analysis. This system captures information from a gas sensor (not included), performs additional cal-culations, evaluates the results, provides data storage and- if necessary - notifies of impend-ing problems.

Why should you use On-line Diagnostics?On-line monitors are often implemented with the expectation that an improved assessment of the apparatus will be achieved with fewer engineering resources. However these monitors produce enormous amounts of data, and it’s not practical to manually process this informa-tion. To realize the true potential of the monitor, an additional step is needed to automatically process the data and notify you when action is required. The Doble Expert System auto-mates the evaluation task, creating a bridge from an on-line monitoring system to an on-line diagnostic monitor. The Doble Expert System in the IDD for DGA, validates data, detects changes, confirms the anomalies, assesses severity and recommends appropriate action.

The IDD for DGA allows users to combine the measuring capability of an on-line dissolved gas in oil monitor with a comprehensive diagnostic system. The resulting system provides early detection of problems and a mechanism for determining when maintenance is truly required.

IDD for DGA Features• Continuous Assessment of Dissolved Gases – the IDD for DGA is constantly working to

retrieve information from the sensor, calculating the total gas generated and rate of change, interpreting the data, and sending notifications of impending problems.

• Diagnoses Severity of Problem – the rate of change of dissolved gas is often the most relevant indication of transformer condition. The IDD for DGA evaluates this critical factor for diag-nosing the severity of abnormalities.

• Comprehensive Analysis – by employing four trending cycles (short, medium, long and very long) the diagnostic analysis can identify a complete range of problems. This includes high rate of gas generation and short gestation periods, to low levels of gas production over long periods of time.

• Detailed Alert Messages – the IDD for DGA issues a series of alerts based on the dissolved gas levels and rates of generation. It starts with early warnings to identify when serious problems appear to be rising. Alert messages indicate the problem, recommend appropriate action, indi-cate urgency and provide supporting evidence.

DescriptionOne IDD can support multiple applications. A single IDD can be used to analyze Bushings, DGA and Moisture.

Every 60 minutes, the IDD records the gas concentration as assessed by the on-line gas monitor. Since monitors only measure the gas

concentration in the oil, the IDD

analysis is needed to compensate the measurements for gases that may have escaped the insulating fluid, before it determines the rate of change. The algorithm used to calculate the total gas produced is dependent on the oil preservation system.

Once the total gas is determined, the IDD for DGA calculates the rate of change over four cycles; 1 day (short cycle), 3 days (medium cycle) and two long cycles (30 and 300 days). The rate of change is compared to various limits. These thresholds are based on the level of gas in the transformer, the cycle

used to calculate rate of change and uncertainty of the data. Alerts are issued when the rate of change exceeds these limits.

Continuous DiagnosticsThe IDD for DGA is designed to operate reliably under extreme weather conditions and electrical interference found in normal substa-tion operations. Self-diagnostics continuously tracks the condition of the IDD for DGA and issues alerts if an abnormality is detected in the system. Diagnostics also validates the information supplied by the gas monitor; only values determined to be valid are used in the calculations made by the IDD.

On-line MonitorsThe IDD for DGA are does not include an on-line dissolved gas monitor. One must be purchased separately as Doble does not offer dissolved gas monitors. Contact your local Doble representative for a list of monitors that are compatible with the IDD for DGA.

Specifications are subject to change.

The IDD for DGA allows users to combine the measuring capability of an on-line dissolved gas in oil monitor with a comprehensive diag-nostic system. The result-ing diagnostic provides early detection of prob-lems and a mechanism for determining when maintenance is truly required.
