This year’s programme has been expanded to three full days. We are delighted to have speakers from Ireland, the UK and Europe presenting on a wide range of topics of relevance to practice in the Public Dental Service. In addition to fulfilling our CPD requirements this seminar is a major contributor to maintaining high standards and quality care for our patients. We have seen many changes to the HSE Dental Service over the last 18 months and the programme will include an update on the Public Service reforms. I am delighted to welcome Dr Ambrose McLoughlin, Secretary General of the Department of Health to give an address on Wednesday, October 10. Our annual Team Day will take place in Thursday, October 11, to which we welcome our dental nurse and dental hygienist colleagues. There will be a full trade show, which I encourage you to visit. Finally, our Seminar would not be complete without a fun social programme, the highlight being our Gala Dinner on Thursday evening – a great night is promised! Prior to starting his own company John was Director of the former Centre for Partnership at the Department of An Taoiseach, General Secretary of the Civil and Public Services Union, and Assistant General secretary of the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland. Mr Eamon O’Muireachartaigh Eamon graduated in 1993 as a chartered physiotherapist. He opened the Leinster Clinic in Kildare in 1996. Eamon has been team physiotherapist to many sporting teams, including the Laois and Kildare senior football teams and the Underdogs series on TG4. He also served with the European Tour as a physiotherapist to professional golfers at several events, including the European Open, West of Ireland Open, and Northwest of Ireland Golf Open. Dr Elizabeth O’Sullivan Elizabeth graduated from Leeds University in 1988 and, after a period in general dental practice, completed a Masters in Paediatric Dentistry in 1992. She continued her paediatric training in Leeds, and completed a PhD on diagnosis and risk factors for erosion in children. She took up a post as Consultant in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire in 2000, the first full- time post based outside a dental teaching hospital. Dr Carmell Parnell Carmel is a Senior Dental Surgeon (Dental Public Health) with the HSE and is currently seconded to the Oral Health Services Research Centre. She was lead researcher in the development of a suite of guidelines on caries prevention for the HSE Dental Service, which have been submitted to the National Clinical Effectiveness Committee for national endorsement. In April 2012 she won the BASCD Oral Health Promotion Prize. Irish Dental Association, that I welcome you to Galway for our Annual

This year’s programme has been expanded to three full days. We are

delighted to have speakers from Ireland, the UK and Europe

Dr Brid HendronBrid qualified fromTrinity College Dublinin 1992. She hasworked in generalpractice for manyyears and has aspecial interest inrelaxing nervous,anxious and phobicpatients. Brid is theonly dentist with aneurolinguisticprogramming (NLP)trainer qualificationin Ireland and is alsoqualified in hypnosis.She provides trainingfor healthcareprofessionals inadvancedcommunication skills.

Dr AmbroseMcLoughlinAmbrose wasappointed SecretaryGeneral of theDepartment ofHealth in April 2012.He graduated fromthe Dublin DentalSchool and Hospitalin 1974, andpractised dentistry formany years as apublic dentalsurgeon. He went onto become CEO ofthe then NorthEastern Health Board,and in 2004 wasappointed Registrarof the PharmacySociety of Ireland –the pharmacyregulatory body.

Dr Anne O’ConnellAnne graduatedfrom Dublin andworked in the UKbefore training inpaediatric dentistryand cariology in theUnited States. Shereturned to Irelandand was appointedSenior Lecturer/Consultant inPaediatric Dentistry.Anne established thepostgraduatetraining programmein paediatricdentistry andintroduced thetrauma clinic in theDDUH. She is inprivate practicelimited to paediatricdentistry in Co.Dublin.

Dr Evelyn ConnollyEvelyn is a seniordental surgeon inpaediatric dentistryin Cavan/Monaghan, andteaches part-time inthe Dublin DentalUniversity Hospital.She graduated fromDublin UniversityDental School in1992 and completedher specialist trainingin paediatricdentistry at theUniversity of Leeds.She holds afellowship inpaediatric dentistryand a Masters incommunity dentalpractice.

Dr Patrick CrottyPatrick graduatedfrom TCD in 1978.He received his FDSin 1983 andcommenced privatepractice in restorativedentistry. Hecurrently teachesadhesive dentistry onTCD’s Diploma inClinical Dentistry. Hehas lectured anddemonstratedthroughout Irelandand the UK, mostlyassociated withdental bonding andlayered compositetechniques, and hasembraced theteachings of Vanini,Dietchi, Devoto,Kanka, Suh andothers.

Ms Mags CurranMargaret worked inOur Lady’s Hospice inDublin from 1980 to1987, and in Bostonuntil 1989, in theFranciscan Children’sHospital andRehabilitation Centre.Returning to Ireland,she worked inCheeverstown withchildren with specialneeds. In 2002 shejoined the dentalsection of the HSE,trained for dentalnursing, andgraduated in 2004.She worked inprimary care dentistryuntil 2005, and thentransferred to specialneeds dentistry.

Dr Adrianne DolanAdrianne graduatedfrom TCD in 1997.She completed aMasters in DentalPublic Health in Corkand took up a specialcare dentistry post inDublin, caring foradults withintellectual andphysical disability,medicallycompromised adultsand children, andthose in specialschools. She is PastPresident of the IrishSociety for Disabilityand Oral Health. Sheis currently workingas Senior DentalSurgeon (SpecialCare) in the HSE inDublin.

Dr Nick ArmstrongNick graduated fromTrinity College Dublinin 1974 and workedin private practice inthe UK for 16 years.He received an MScin EnvironmentalScience from BrunelUniversity in 1980.Nick recently retiredas Acting PrincipalDental Surgeon inthe HSE Dublin Westregion, where his roleincluded infectioncontrol and healthand safety. Nick sitson the Patient SafetyCommittee of theIDA.

Dr Marielle BlakeMarielle graduatedfrom Trinity CollegeDublin in 1985 andwent on to studyorthodontics at theUniversity ofToronto, graduatingin 1992. Following ayear in the UKMarielle returned tothe Dublin DentalHospital as a SeniorRegistrar, and iscurrently aconsultantorthodontist workingin the HSE SWAorthodontic unit inSt James’s Hospitalin Dublin. She alsomaintains a privatepractice in Dublin.

Dr Andrew BolasAndrew received hisBDS from QueensUniversity in 1991,his FFDRCSI in oralsurgery in 1994, hisFDSRCS in oralsurgery and oralmedicine in 1995,and an MSc indental radiology in2000. He moved toSligo in 1997 and iscurrently employedfull time by the HSEin West Sligo/Leitrim,while also lecturingin dental radiology inthe Dublin DentalSchool. Andrew is thecurrent Irish DentalAssociation President.

Dr Sue BoyntonSue has over 20years’ experience inprimary dental care.She also has aMasters Degree inMedical Law, withher dissertationfocussing on issues ofpatient consent, aFellowship from theFaculty of GeneralDental Practice (UK),and is an NLPMaster Practitionerand a trainedmentor. Sue is one ofDental Protection’sSenior Dento-legaladvisers and is alsoDPL’s Deputy Leadfor members inIreland.

Dr Frank BurkeFrank graduated in1982 from DublinUniversity. He thenlectured ingerodontics and since1998 he has beenSenior Lecturer/Consultant inRestorative Dentistryat UCC. He is Past-President of theBritish Society forGerodontology, TheIrish Division of theInternationalAssociation for DentalResearch, and theBritish Association ofTeachers ofConservativeDentistry. He is amember of theDental Council.
