3. PHOTO EXHIBITS I) Working the City: experiences of migrant women in inner city Johannesburg "Working the City" is a culmination of images that were produced during a
participatory photo project aiming to look at how migrant women sex workers represent themselves and if/how urban space impacted their self-representations. This project allowed for a deeper insight into the voices of the women photographers by allowing them to personally engage in their life stories and - importantly - how they wanted to portray themselves as they shared a story, or multiple stories, about themselves and their lives.
II) A search for “The Devil to Pay in the Backlands” – Em busca do Grande Sertão
Veredas João Guimarães Rosa (1908-1967) published his masterpiece "Grande Sertão: Veredas" in 1956, some years after a long ride through the countryside of the central region of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The book is considered, in all fairness, one of the most important works of world literature. In a 2002 poll of 100 noted writers conducted by Norwegian Book Clubs, the book was named among the top 100 books of all time. This is the photographic record of a journey through the enigmatic and revealing tracks where the novel took place.

Getting Around Belo Horizonte
Aside from the Site Visits, all events will be held at MINASCENTRO, which is located
at 785 Augusto de Lima Avenue. The easiest and safest way to get around Belo
Horizonte is by taxi.
IN BEAGÁ
Known to locals as “Beagá” (Portuguese for BH, pronounced “Bay-Agah”), Belo
Horizonte has the reputation of being World’s bar capital. Not bars as in fancy hotel
lounges or cheap meat markets, but bars as in “botecos” – informal sit-down spots
where many generations socialize, drink beer and often have an informal meal.
According to local rumors, there are 12,000 bars in the city, the highest rate per capita
in the country. No one is completely sure why there are so many, but one theory has
turned into a popular saying “Não tem mares, tem bares” (“There are no seas, thus
there are bars”).

A good choice to discover Beagá is to walk around the Savassi region. This is the area
of Belo Horizonte known for its restaurants and high-energy nightlife. Many Belo
Horizonte cultural attractions can also be found there, such as the Savassi Square
(which is actually a crossing between two major avenues and a meeting point for the
youth) and Praça da Liberdade (or Liberty Square).
The “Praça da Liberdade” is a
square and an architectural
complex, but also a synthesis of
styles that mark Belo Horizonte’s
history. Its surrounding buildings
include the former Executive Offices
of the governor, called “Palácio da
Liberdade” (Liberty Palace), which
follows the architectural tendencies
of the time of the creation of the
Square and of the city (1897) - an
eclectic style with neoclassical
elements. There is as well the
Niemeyer Building and the Public
Library (60’s modern buildings), the
“Queen of Junk” (post-modern 80’s style), etc. The Square also offers a bandstand and
a lighted fountain, and gardens, inspired by the Palace of Versailles, which are an open
invitation to walking and strolling around.

A very important area of Begaá
is the Pampulha region – an
architectural complex built in
the 40’s and a gathering of
examples of the Brazilian
contemporary architecture. The
complex consists of the São
Francisco de Assis Church, also
known as the “Igrejinha da
Pampulha” (“Pampulha’s Little
Church”), the Pampulha
Museum of Art, the Casa do
Baile, and the Iate Tennis Club,
which are located along the
banks of Pampulha Lake. This
region has also other significant cultural landmarks, such as the Mineirão Stadium (one
of the largest soccer stadiums in the world) and the Federal University of Minas Gerais’
campus.
In Downtown Belo Horizonte, are located the Municipal Park, which was built with the
city in the end of the 20th century, the Praça da Estação (Station Square), an old train
station that today has become the Museum of Arts and Crafts, and the Praça Sete de
Setembro (September 7th Square), an obelisk that marks the 100th anniversary of the
Brazilian Independence.
There are as well very interesting options in the surroundings of Beagá. One of them is
the Centro de Arte Contemporânea Inhotim, the greater Belo’s new tourist attraction,
an impressive, sprawling complex of gardens dotted with 16 modern art galleries and
numerous outdoor sculptures, 50km west of the city, near the town of Brumadinho.
Another option is the city of Ouro Preto, located 80km from BH, and the most
impressive of all the exquisite colonial towns scattered around Minas Gerais, Significant
historically as a center of gold mining and government, and as the stage for Brazil’s first
independence movement, the city remains vital in modern times as a center for
education and the arts, and as one of Brazil’s three most visited tourist destinations.
