letter from tHe DireCtor / Carta Del DireCtorDear frienDs of tHe instituto Cervantes in syDneyI am very happy to share with you the spring cultural program of our centre which, as you will soon gather, blossoms with many interesting events that will be of your liking. You have the last chance to see Surprises of the Cosmos before we host Thinking about Europe. This new exhibition consists of over 100 drawings, paintings and collages made by students aged 5-12 who took part in a competition to celebrate the European Language Day in Sydney. Cinema will be very present during the next three months. In our Double Screen program we have prepared a new series, Between Two Worlds. In November the 5th Hola Mexico Film Festival comes to Sydney and we are very proud to show 5 excellent films to commemorate the 100 anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. Days later you will have the chance to see the Made in Catalonia Film Festival with new exciting productions. As part of our celebration of the Bicentennial of the Independence of the American republics professor Vázquez will talk about Spain in the early 19 century. We will also commemorate with Pedro Meyer the 100 anniversary of the birth of one of the best poets in Spain, Miguel Hernández, who tragically died in 1942. There is music too, with a piano concert by David Gómez on the Spanish National Day and tango with Tangovia. Finally to end this Holy Year we will host the presentation of the book A Food Lover’s Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela written by Dee Nolan and with photographs by Earl Carter. I take the opportunity to wish you all the best for 2011.

QueriDos amigos Del instituto Cervantes De sÍDneyMe satisface presentaros el programa de primavera de nuestro centro que, como veréis, está lleno de muchas actividades que serán de vuestro interés. Quedan pocos días para la clausura de Sorpresas del Cosmos antes de inaugurar Pensar Europa, una exposición de 100 trabajos hechos por estudiantes de 5-12 años para el concurso que se organizó para el Día Europeo de las Lenguas de Sídney. El cine estará muy presente estos próximos tres meses. Hemos preparado dentro del programa "En pantalla doble" un nuevo ciclo: Entre dos mundos. En noviembre la 5° edición del Festival Hola México llega a Sídney y estamos muy orgullosos de mostrar en el Instituto Cervantes de Sídney cinco excelentes películas para conmemorar el centenario de la Revolución mexicana. Días más tarde tendréis la oportunidad de disfrutar del Made in Catalonia Film Festival con nuevas producciones. Como parte de las celebraciones de los bicentenarios de las Independencias, el profesor Sigfrido Vázquez nos hablará de la España a principios del siglo XIX. También conmemoraremos con Pedro Meyer el centenario del nacimiento de uno de los mejores poetas españoles, Miguel Hernández, que murió trágicamente en 1942. La música también tendrá su espacio, con un concierto de piano a cargo de David Gómez en el Día Nacional de España, y con una actuación de tango con Tangovia. Finalmente para cerrar este Año Santo acogeremos la presentación del libro Un amante de la cocina por el Camino de Santiago, de la periodista Dee Nolan y el fotógrafo Earl Carter. Quisiera aprovechar estas líneas para desearos un feliz 2011.

The exhibition SURPRISES OF THE COSMOS is the result of the collaboration between the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands and the Instituto Cervantes. Its objective is to present abroad the astrophysics investigation studies that are carried out in Spain, a country that counts with important observatories in its territory, coinciding with the celebration of the Year International of Astronomy in 2009.

La exposición SORPRESAS DEL COSMOS es fruto de la colaboración entre el Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias y el Instituto Cervantes. Su objetivo es dar a conocer en el extranjero la labor de investigación astrofísica que se lleva a cabo en España, un país que cuenta con importantes observatorios en su territorio, coincidiendo con la celebración en 2009 del Año Internacional de la Astronomía.

A new film series kicks off this October and will last until mid December. It is all about being in one world and not knowing which one is yours. Do you think your world is the only one that exists? Life follows parallel lines of two different worlds, sometimes they cross, sometimes they don’t. Some of the characters of this new film screening are aware of it, others not.

Un nuevo ciclo arranca este mes de octubre que nos llevará hasta diciembre. Va sobre estar en un mundo y no saber cuál es el tuyo. ¿Crees que tu mundo es el único que existe? La vida transcurre entre dos mundos paralelos que a veces se cruzan, otras no. Los protagonistas de este ciclo son conscientes de vivir esta experiencia, unos quieren renunciar a ella y los otros no.

David Gómez (Wattwil, Switzerland, 1974) offered his first recital at the age of 14 and ever since then has performed as a soloist and as part of a chamber music ensemble throughout Europe, America, Asia and Oceania. He has played at prestigious concert halls such as St Martin-in-The-Fields in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the National Concert Hall in Dublin, the Opera of Cairo, the Chicago Cultural Center and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow and in Mexico DF (Centro Nacional de las Artes). In December he will make his debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York.

David Gómez (Wattwil, Suiza, 1974) ofreció su primer recital a la edad de 14 años, y desde entonces ha actuado en calidad de solista y en diferentes conjuntos de música de cámara por diversos lugares de Europa, América, Asia y Oceanía, entre los que destacan: St Martin-in-The-Fields de Londres (Reino Unido), el Concertgebouw en Amsterdam, en el National Concert Hall de Dublín (Irlanda), en la Ópera del Cairo (Egipto), en el Chicago Cultural Center (EE.UU.), en Polonia (Radio Polaca), Moscú (Museo Pushkin), Centro Nacional de las Artes (México DF). The events that occurred in 1810 on both sides of the Atlantic triggered the political movements that led a big part of Hispanic America to independence. The invasion of Andalucía by the Napoleonic army and the Spanish government taking shelter in Cádiz seemed to announce the submission of Spain to France. The Hispanic America didn't want to fall in the hands of the French so different groups all across the continent sprang demanding more autonomy or independence.

Los sucesos acaecidos en 1810 a uno y otro lado del Atlántico acabaron por desencadenar los movimientos políticos que llevarían a gran parte de la América hispana hacia su independencia. La invasión de Andalucía por las tropas de Napoleón y el refugio del gobierno español en la ciudad de Cádiz a principios de 1810 pareció anunciar el final la independencia España y su sumisión a Francia. La América hispana ya había demostrado en 1808 que no pensaba claudicar ante los intereses bonapartistas y fue en 1810 cuando diferentes movimientos políticos sacudieron las posesiones ultramarinas españolas de norte a sur con una mezcla de rechazo a lo que parecía se avecinaba por parte de Napoleón y un creciente deseos de mayor autonomía e independencia. Sin embargo, no fue un proceso uniforme para las que en pocos años serían repúblicas americanas pues las razones, condicionantes y desarrollo de los acontecimientos dependió de múltiples factores que propiciaron una lucha entre aquellos que pugnaban por el mantenimiento de los lazos y los que preferían la quiebra de la unión entre América y España.

The economic, political and military crisis affecting Spain since the late Eighteenth Century, which was motivated by a long French revolutionary process, had a direct impact on its American possessions. The transfer of the accumulated debt to the Latin American viceroyalties, the Spanish political instability and the revolutionary examples of the United States and France, among other factors, laid the foundations for the beginning of the independence process. When the crisis of the Spanish monarchy occurred due to the overthrow of King Charles IV by his own son Fernando and the subsequent French invasion ordered by Napoleon, America reacted with unanimous loyalty to Spain and his new king Fernando VII. However, the erratic course followed by the policy in the Iberian Peninsula, mainly due to the Napoleonic military superiority, eventually encouraged those who supported a greater American autonomy with the juntista movements in 1810.

La crisis económica, política y militar que acuciaba a España desde finales del siglo XVIII, motivada por largo proceso revolucionario francés, acabó por tener unas repercusiones directas sobre sus posesiones americanas. El trasvase de la deuda acumulada a los virreinatos hispanoamericanos, la inestabilidad política española y los ejemplos revolucionarios de los Estados Unidos de América y Francia, entre otros muchos factores, crearon el sustrato sobre el que se cimento el inicio del proceso independentista. Cuando en 1808 se desencadenó la crisis de la monarquía española por el derrocamiento del rey Carlos IV por su propio hijo Fernando y la posterior invasión francesa ordenada por Napoleón, América reaccionó con lealtad unánime a España y a su nuevo rey Fernando VII. Sin embargo, el errático derrotero que siguió la política en la península Ibérica, debida fundamentalmente a la superioridad militar napoleónica, acabó por alentar a aquellos que eran partidarios de una mayor autonomía americana con los movimientos juntistas de 1810.

As part of the celebrations of the first European Language Day in Australia (Sydney, September 24), the Goethe Institut, the Alliance Française, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, the British Council and the Instituto Cervantes in Sydney jointly organized a competition amongst primary school students, aged 5-12, to think about Europe. They were asked to produce an image that represented a characteristic of ‘Europe’ with a maximum size of A3. The image was presented as a drawing, a painting, a photo or a collage. You will be able to enjoy the work of 100 kids and the winners of the contest and try to think of Europe yourself.

Como parte de las celebraciones del primer Día Europeo de las Lenguas en Australia (Sídney, el 24 de septiembre), conjuntamente el Goethe Institut, la Alianza Francesa, el Istituto Italiano di Cultura, el British Council y el Instituto Cervantes de Sídney organizaron una competición sobre Europa entre estudiantes de primaria, de edades comprendidas entre 5 y 12 años. Se les pidió que produjeran una imagen no más grande de A3 que representase una característica de Europa. La imagen podría ser un dibujo, una pintura, una foto o un collage. Ahora podréis disfrutar del trabajo de 100 chavales y de los ganadores del concurso, y pensar también vosotros en Europa.

November is the movie month with two festivals. However we continue with our Double Screen program Between Two Worlds with three new films that portray the parallel lives of different characters. Many of them have nothing in common and but by chance they cross in one point.

El mes de noviembre es el mes del cine con dos festivales. Sin embargo, continuamos con nuestra serie de "En pantalla doble", Entre dos mundos, con tres nuevas películas que retratan las vidas paralelas de diferentes personajes. Celebrating the Bicentennial of the Independence of Mexico and the 5th edition of the festival. The HOLA MEXICO is bringing it's biggest program yet. With more than 20 films including features documentaries, a retrospective of Carlos Carrera, 5th anniversary screenings and a free Mexican Revolution free-entrance cycle at the Instituto Cervantes.

The festival which now screens in 14 cities around the world, comes back to its inaugural city Sydney, on the 4th of November. The program includes films like Revolución, Alamar, Abel, Norteado and many other world hits.

Celebrando el Bicentenario de la Independencia de México y la 5º edición del festival. El HOLA MEXICO trae su programa más grande. Con más de 20 películas incluyendo largometrajes, documentales, una retrospectiva de Carlos Carrera, funciones del 5º aniversario y un programa gratuito de cine de la Revolución Mexicana en el Instituto Cervantes.

TangoVia Buenos Aires is a nonprofit organization that, since 2002, has brought together artists, researchers and cultural institutions to contribute to the preservation and promotion of tango as an art form in Buenos Aires and the world. Meet TangoVia creator musician Ignacio Varchausky, who will be talking about this important project and who will be performing together with Maggie Furgueson (violin/bandoneon), for the delight of the audience. Members of the public are encouraged to show off their skills on the dance floor!

The talk and performance will be preceded by the screening of the documentary Si sos brujo (by Caroline Neal, 2005) which features Ignacio Varchausky as well as old and new generations of tango musicians.

This is a collaborative project supported among others by SURCLA (Sydney University Research Community for Latin America), the Spanish and Latin American Studies Department at the University of Sydney and the Consulate of Argentina.

TangoVia Buenos Aires es una organización sin ánimo de lucro que, desde 2002, ha trabajado conjuntamente con artistas, investigadores e instituciones culturales para contribuir a la preservación y promoción del tango como un arte en Buenos Aires y en todo el mundo. Conoce al creador del creador de TangoVia, el músico Ignacio Varchausky, quien nos hablará de la importancia de este proyecto, y que actuará junto a Maggie Furgueson (violín/bandoneón) para deleite del público. Se invita a los asistentes a mostrar sus cualidades de baile en el escenario.

La charla y la actuación vendrá precedida por la proyección del documental Si sos brujo (de Caroline Neal, 2005) que muestra a Ignacio Varchausky, así como a viejas y nuevas generaciones de músicos de tango.

This year marks the 100 year aniversary of one of the most important historic events in the 20th century, the Mexican Revolution. It coincides with the celebrations of the Bicentennial of the Independence of Mexico from Spain. The Embassy of Mexico in Australia and the Instituto Cervantes in Sydney proudly presents during of the 2010 HOLA MEXICO Film Festival a series of works to honour that commemoration.

Este año se cumple el centenario de uno de los acontecimientos más importantes del siglo XX, la Revolución mexicana. Coincide además con las celebraciones del Bicentenario de la Independencia de México. El Instituto Cervantes en Sídney y la Embajada de México en Australia orgullosamente presentan en el marco del Festival Hola México de 2010 una serie de películas que recuerden la efeméride centenaria.

Accompanying Santiago Sierra’s 22nd Kaldor Public Art Project in Brisbane, the celebrated Spanish artist will host a special discussion at the Instituto Cervantes in Sydney. In May 2010, at a public symposium for the Instituto Cervantes in Berlin, Sierra segregated the audience according to their income, separating and screening the event from the view of low-income earners as a statement about financial disadvantage and access. In Sydney, Sierra will host a panel discussion with Indigenous artists as an exchange of ideas about artmaking.

Como parte complementaria del 22 Kaldor Public Art Project de Brisbane, el famoso artista español participará en una charla en el Instituto Cervantes de Sídney. En mayo de este año, en un simposio público para el Instituto Cervantes de Berlín, Santiago Sierra dividió al público de acuerdo con sus ingresos, como denuncia de las diferencias económicas. En Sídney, Santiago Sierra participará en una mesa redonda con artistas aborígenes australianos e intercambiará ideas sobre la creación artística.

The Casal celebrates its 3rd annual 'Made in Catalonia' Film Festival (MiCFF) by presenting it this year in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra!

The Festival's aim is to promote the extraordinary lively film culture of Catalonia. The films and documentaries will be shown in the original languages (Catalan and Spanish) with English subtitles.

El Casal celebra su tercera edición del 'Made in Catalonia' Film Festival (MiCFF) en Melbourne, Sídney, Brisbane y Canberra.

El Festival tiene como objetivo promocionar la extraordinaria cultura cinematográfica de Cataluña en Australia. En Sídney se dedicarán dos días a ver películas de realizadores catalanes en el Instituto Cervantes de la ciudad. Las proyecciones serán exhibidas en su lengua original (catalán y castellano) con subtítulos en inglés.

For over 40 years, Kaldor Public Art Projects has brought groundbreaking artists to Australia from around the world. This year, celebrated Spanish artist Santiago Sierra will create a 9-day event at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane as the 22nd Kaldor Public Art Project. Sierra is internationally renowned for his provocative art works that focus our attention on inequities in social and economic systems. For this project, 7 forms measuring 600 x 60 x 60cm, constructed to be held horizontal to a wall, a group of monolithic sculptural forms are supported on the shoulders of paid workers for the duration of the exhibition.

Durante más de 40 años, Kaldor Public Art Projects ha traído a Australia a reconocidos artistas de mundo entero. Este año, el artista español Satiago Sierra creará un evento de 9 días en la Galería de Arte Moderno de Brisbane como parte del 22 Kaldor Public Art Project. Santiago Sierra es famoso por su trabajo provocativo llamando nuestra atención sobre las desigualdades del sistema económico y social. Para este proyecto, 7 estructuras de 600x60x60cm, construidas para sostenerse de forma horizontal en un muro, formarán una serie de esculturas monolíticas sobre los hombros de unos jornaleros durante el tiempo de la exposición.

The Instituto Cervantes is a public not-for-profit institution founded by the Government of Spain in 1991 to promote Spanish language teaching and knowledge of the cultures of Spanish speaking countries throughout the world. It is now the largest international Spanish teaching organization, and has more than 70 centres, in over 40 countries, in the five continents.

The central headquarters of the Instituto Cervantes are in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, and in Madrid. The Instituto Cervantes in Sydney was established in June 2009.

El Instituto Cervantes es una entidad sin ánimo de lucro creada por el gobierno de España en 1991. Su misión es promover la enseñanza del español y de las lenguas cooficiales de España, así como contribuir a la difusión de la cultura de los países de habla española. The Instituto Cervantes in Sydney has developed a program of institutional sponsorship and subsidised projects, directed to companies that wish to contribute economically to the diffusion of the academic and cultural activities that the Institute carries out.

The program obeys to a model by which the sponsors receive a series of returns in exchange for their economic contributions. These advantages refer to aspects like the institutional recognition, public relations, communication or localities. The contributions are realised with annual or precise character in the context of the sponsorship program of the Instituto Cervantes in Sydney.
