Braham takes on a very new look after graduating multi-season players the past two years, including record-breaker Tyler Vaughan and center Cameron Braund mov-ing on to college teams off last season’s section cham-pionship squad. Hollenkamp

(9.6 ppg, 40 three-pointers) and Dahlman (5.6 ppg, 110 rebounds) are called upon to shore up the middle and rebound hard each night. Sti-gen nailed 46 three-pointers and will help lead the defense at guard. Larson, coming off a season learning leader-ship as the Braham football varsity quarterback, takes over point from Vaughan. We are very skilled for being so young. The boys will work hard to maintain our winning tradition.”

Great River and Section 7AA Outlooks: Braham is on a 42-game winning streak in the Great River Conference and will be the favorites until another team can snap that run. Coach Vaughan fore-sees Hinckley, Rush City and Aitkin to field competitive squads this season.

In Section 7AA, Coach Vaughan calls last year’s runner-up Esko to be the heavy favorite when March rolls around. The Eskomos have their three lanky junior shooters back who caused fits in the ‘12 section finals. Mora, who Braham travels to Dec. 7, and Moose Lake-Wil-low River also have athletes who could make a difference in the section brackets.

2012 Braham Girls Bas-ketball records: 16-0 Great River Conference (1st place), 29-2 overall, Sec-tion 7AA champions, Lost in Class AA State quarterfinals

2013 Lineup features: Var-sity returners– SRS 5’9” G Becca Dahlman, 5’9” C Dani Braund; JR 5’8” G Kayla Nickles

New depth– JR G Jenna Winter; SOPH 5’9” C Natalie Bacon; FR G Jaclyn Hollen-kamp, G Angie Bendickson; 8TH G Lizzie Altendorf

This is the final go-round for record-setting se-nior guard Becca Dahlman whose Bomber team would love extending their State-entrance string to five years in March. Dahlman is now at 4,012 career points

after the Bombers defeated Park Center on Saturday at the Breakdown Classic. Her 1,094 points last year were a single-season record for Minnesota girls hoops. The Vanderbilt recruit also contributed 360 rebounds, 185 steals and 158 assists. Kayla Nickles (10.0 ppg, 52 three-pointers, 137 reb., 118 asst) is the other re-turning starter and strong link to the 2011 State cham-pion team.

Dani Braund (4.2 ppg, 105 reb., 26 steals) came up big for the Bombers with strong middle defense in the playoff run last year. Speedy athletes Jenna Win-ter and Jaclyn Hollenkamp will add to the Bombers’ pressure defense while helping make up for the

talent lost through gradu-ation, including 1,000-plus point scorer Kelsey Soren-son-Giffrow. Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Tim Malone– “We hope to be competi-tive in both Section 7AA and in the Great River Con-ference this season. We will be shorter and faster than we have ever been.”

Great River and Section 7AA Outlooks: The Bomb-ers head into the 2013 sea-son on a 48-game winning streak in the Great River Conference. Isle, who gave Braham two good chal-lenges last year, is Coach Malone’s pick as the top contender. He also sees Aitkin making great im-

provements on the court this year. In Section 7AA, Esko be-gins the season ranked 5th in Class AA, while Braham is ranked 7th. Coach Malone–“Esko is stacked with a very solid senior class.” At the top off that group is 6’8” shot-blocking C Savanna Trapp (signed with UCLA) and very swift G Marissa Shady who placed 5th at the State Cross Country Meet this autumn. The Eskomos would love another crack at the Bombers after falling to them the past three 7AA championship games.

2012 Rush City-Braham Wrestling records: 2-3 Great River Conference du-als, 4th place GRC Finals, 3-7 overall duals, Lost in Section 7AA opening round

2013 Lineup features: Varsity returners– SRS Dan Johnson (17 wins in 2012), Dillon Arispe (9 wins), Bryce Lanhart, Nick Kost; JRS Tyler Sitz; SOPHS Ja-cob Lynch (25 wins, Sect. 7AA 3rd at 195), Logan Johnson (24 wins, Sect. 7AA 3rd at 170), Francis Loerzel; FR Isaiah Johnson (22 wins, Sect. 7AA 3rd at 160); 8TH Dylan Mielke.

New depth– SRS Bran-don Arispe, Casey Desoto, James Kelling; JR Chase Grant; SOPHS Blaine Blazek, Braxton Wolf; FR Sonny Foote; 8TH Bryce Bodell; 7TH Dalton Mielke, Tucker Liegland.

The Rush City-Braham wrestlers graduated just three wrestlers from the Section 7AA Individual

tourney lineup which wrapped up last season. With the mix of the return-ers and many new faces signed on to the program, the Tigers have the look of a stronger lineup for the 2013 campaign. Positives for 2013 sea-son: Coach Jake Shock-man– “With 43 kids out, we’re going to be able to fill spots that in the past we struggled to fill. We have close to two lineups this year which will allow us to move and jockey for posi-tions. It’s nice to see the hard work (coaches) Josh, Dan and I have put in pay-ing off with more interest. Plus, our Braham Warriors youth wrestling club which starts this month has large numbers of kids signed up, too.”

The Tigers opened the season with a 4th-place showing at their own Rush City Invite on Saturday. Isaiah Johnson (171) and

Logan Johnson (195) both placed 2nd in the invite which was won by 2012 Class A runner-up Kimball (totaling six 1st places).

Finishing 3rd at the In-vite with wins were James Kelling (145), Dan Johnson (152) and Jacob Lynch (220). Placing 4th for the Tigers were Dylan Mielke (113) and Bryce Bodell (126). Adding 5th-place wins were Dalton Mielke (106), Bryce Lanhart (138) and Blaine Blazek (160).

Great River and Section 7AA Outlooks: Aitkin and Mille Lacs finished 1st-2nd at last year’s GRC Finals tourney. Coach Shockman predicts the Gobblers and

Raiders to be the front-run-ners again. Coach Shock-man– “But we are getting closer to those teams, and I think we can give them a tight match once we get our lineup solidified. We have high expectations for this year, and we like how future wrestling years could look, too.”

In Section 7AA, Milaca is the reigning champ who finished as the Class AA consolation champs last March. The Wolves, ranked 6th in the pre-season poll, will have to get past strong contention from the likes of Grand Rapids and Hib-bing, along with the rest of the section crew.

2012 Cambridge Christian Girls Basketball records: 6-4 Christian Athletic League regular season, 22-6 overall, 2nd place CAL Finals tour-ney

2013 Lineup features: Varsity returners– SRS G Shelby Doble, G Seble Doble, G Caitlin Walburg; JR F Kellie Pedersen; FR F Kristin Bergman, G Jerusa-lem Solomon.

New depth– JR C Karly Wiek, SOPH C Emily Frid-berg, FR G Amelia Cole.

Shelby Doble, Seble Doble and Kellie Pedersen return from the Warriors’ starting lineup that fin-ished strongly at the Chris-tian Athletic League finals last winter. Gone from the squad is 1,000-point scorer

Ellie Werlien and rebound-er Mikayla Lecceardone, but working to take their minutes are Caitlin Wal-burg, Kristin Bergman and Jerusalem Solomon who all filled in well on the 2012 varsity.

Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Brian Berg-man– “The team has looked very good in prac-tices so far. I am encour-aged with how well the new girls are fitting in. Ev-eryone is contributing this year, and we will have a very deep bench. It is also nice to have so many girls that have a lot of varsity experience. The addition of 5’11” Karly Wiek and the growth of 5’10” Kristin Bergman gives us more

height to work with than we have had in the past two years, so it will be fun to combine some height with our speed.

“Our opener with St Francis got off to a slow start as the girls looked a little rusty in the first half. We were able to manage a 23-13 lead at the half. Our play picked up quite a bit in the second half, and we we able to win convincing-ly 46-22. I was very happy to see how well everyone contributed in this game. The scoring was pretty evenly spread out: Shelby led with 10 points, Karly Wiek had 7, and we got 6 points each from Jerusa-lem, Emily and Seble. Kel-lie added 5, points, with Kristin (4) and Caitlin (2)

also scoring. Overall, not a bad game for our first one of the year.”

Christian Athletic League Outlook: Coach Bergman– “I expect the Rochester Area Home School Defend-ers to be the team to beat in CAL again this year. They have always had a big height advantage over ev-eryone in the league. This year, we have a little more height on our team, so I am hoping that will make a dif-ference. Our goal will be to meet them in the champi-onship again this year.”

The Warriors defeated the RAHS Defenders 48-38 at last weekend’s Coulee, WI tip-off tourney.

2012 Cambridge Chris-tian Boys Basketball re-cords: 8-2 Christian Athlet-ic League regular season, 20-6 overall, 3rd place CAL Finals tourney

2013 Lineup features: Var-sity returners– SRS 6’6” C Peter Maring, G Josh Ro-ble; JRS G Jake Bergman, G Justin Roble, F Grant Taylor

New depth– SRS Andrew Heidelberger, Alex Lec-ceardone, Anders Boyum.

The Warrior boys bas-ketball squad aims to keep the momentum rolling from the success several of the players enjoyed on the CAL champion soc-cer team this past fall. Peter Maring brings his attacking style to anchor the middle for CCS. Josh Roble, Jake Bergman and Justin Roble are also returning starters, and Grant Taylor (last year’s sixth man) takes the place of graduated four-year starter Josiah Scheumann. Anders Boyum moves into the sixth-man slot, and

Andrew Heidelberger and Alex Lecceardone provide more senior leadership on the court. Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Jeff Bonkoski– “Our biggest strength is great team cohesiveness. We have a strong group of juniors and seniors who know the system and play well together. The start-ing six guys are very hun-gry and focused. In our 65-20 opening win against St. Francis Christian, we played a great defensive

game. Plus we had only had one turnover in first half and played better than I expected.”

In the opener on the road, Maring led with 18 points, Josh Roble scored 11, and Justin Roble 10. Adding 9 points each were Bergman and Taylor.

Christian Athletic League Outlook: Coach Bonkoski– “Rochester Area Home Schools (RAHS) will be our biggest challenge. We split last year during the regu-lar season, then we lost

to them in the CAL semifi-nals. They match up very well with us and also have a strong group of juniors and seniors since they didn’t lose much from last year. Other teams that will be right there will be Immanuel Christian and Christian Life.”

At last weekend’s Cou-lee, WI tip-off tourney, the Warriors got in the first salvo on the RAHS Defend-ers in a 51-41 victory.

2013 Cambridge-Isanti Boys Basketball: (Row 1, l-r) Matt Swanson, Aaron Allen, Mitch Andres, Sam Thomas, Leo Tiberghier, Travis LaBeau, Colton Banks, Hunter Vavra, (Row 2) Coach Jeff Salo, Coach Jim Lutterman, Max Knowlton, Garrett Hiljus, Brad Douglass, Nate Cox, Jacob Johnson, Kyle McDonald, Coach MIke McDonald, Coach Bill Baumann.

2012 Cambridge-Isanti Girls Basketball records: 8-4 Mississippi 8 Confer-ence (3rd place), 20-9 over-all, Section 7AAAA runners-up

2013 Lineup features: Varsity returners– SRS PG Brynn Liljander (All-M8, 12.6 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.6 apg), F Amanda Hanson (M8 Honorable Mention, 6.1 ppg, 3.8 rpg), G Paige Mue-hlhauser (6.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.3 apg); SOPH Lily Porta (2.6 ppg, 1.6 rpg).

New depth– JRS G Jus-tine Larson (2.3 ppg), 5’11” C Shelby Swanson; SOPHS F Maria Vavra, G Sydney Larkin.

The Bluejackets are out to a 2-0 start on the strength of very solid team defense. Co-captain Brynn Liljander has paced the of-fense with 60 points total in the two wins, attacking the hoop well. Amanda

Hanson and Paige Muehl-hauser bring savvy athleti-cism to their co-captain roles. Justine Larson, Lily Porta, Maria Vavra and Sydney Larkin are younger players who buy into the defensive scheme.

The C-I girls gradu-ated six players off their 2012 roster, including 2,000-point scorer Whit-ney Olson and multi-sea-son post players Natalie Larson and Emily Holboy. Shelby Swanson and Alexa Wiese may be leaned on to help shore up the middle of the Jacket defense this season. Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Jody Ledahl– “Our three seniors have logged a lot of minutes the last two seasons and are ready to step up and lead us this season. We are very undersized, so we will look to spread the floor on of-

fense and rely more on our defense this season.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AAAA Outlooks: Buffalo is the four-time defending champ in the Mississippi 8 Conference, but Coach Ledahl sees St. Michael-Albertville and Rogers re-turning very strong teams to chase this winter. Mon-ticello also finished well last season, advancing to the Class AAA State tour-ney.

Forest Lake, Andover and Anoka return much of their teams to be the front-runners in Section 7AAAA at the start of the season. Defending section champ Duluth East is awaiting the return of 6’2” center Emily Lushine (knee injury). The Bluejackets will work hard to climb that next step af-ter reaching the section championship game the past four winters.

Sports Schedule

2012 Cambridge-Isanti Boys Basketball records: 1-11 Mississippi 8 Confer-ence (7th place), 3-26 over-all, Lost in Section 7AAAA quarterfinals

2013 Lineup features: Var-sity returners– SRS G Aaron Allen, G Colton Banks, F Sam Thomas; JRS 6’4” F Matt Swanson (M8 Honor-able Mention), 7.4 ppg, 7.6 rpg), 6’2” F Hunter Vavra (7.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg), 6’2” F Jake Johnson (4.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg); SOPHS G Kyle McDon-ald (3.9 ppg, 2.5 apg), G Nate Cox (3.6 ppg).

New depth– SRS G Mitch Andres, C Travis LaBeau, G Tomuald Singleton, G Leo Tiberghein; JRS G Max Knowlton, G Garrett Hiljus,

F Brad Douglass; SOPH G Evan Dunbar.

The Bluejackets went with a youth movement last year that aims to pay divi-dends starting this season. Returning starters Hunter Vavra, Matt Swanson and Jake Johnson bring a physi-cal presence back to their forward positions. Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Mike McDon-ald– “Matt, Hunter and Jake are older, stronger, taller and wiser. Look for lead-ership from them. Kyle McDonald was the backup point last year and an oc-casional starter. He had a great offseason playing against elite AAU players and should use that expe-

rience to be a great leader in the backcourt. Nate Cox also was a key reserve for us last season with the ability to score from in-side and out. Aaron Allen played valuable minutes as a reserve last season. Sam Thomas and Max Knowlton are ‘glue’ guys who can de-fend, get a lot of 50/50 balls, and make plays. We also look for others on our ros-ter to step up and be ‘stars’ in their role. Bill Baumann brings his wealth of expe-rience to the Bluejacket Basketball program after a Hall of Fame career as head coach at North Branch. He can only help us to be more successful. Jeff Salo, a for-mer Bluejacket guard, is also now our JV coach, and

his mentorship will be a big plus, as well.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AAAA Outlooks:

St. Michael-Albertville and Rogers snapped Buf-falo’s five-year run atop the Mississippi 8 last winter. Coach McDonald– “Buffalo should be strong again in our conference with SRS Ethan Freer, Jason Senger, Peter Cassady and Austin Youngs returning.”

Coach McDonald pre-dicts Section 7AAAA to be as balanced as its ever been with no real pre-season favorite. Defending champ Duluth East gradu-ated much of its scoring and playmaking.

2012 Cambridge-Isanti Boys Swim & Dive re-cords: 2-2 Mississippi 8 Conference (3rd place), 6-4 overall duals, 5th place at Section 7AA Finals

2013 Lineup features: Varsity returners– SRS Cal-vin Cicha (Breaststroke, Butterfly, Ind. Medley), Darren Codner (Freestyle sprints), Joe Lewis (Free-style sprints), Patrick

Jones (Freestyle); JR Park-er Brown (Diving), SOPHS Cody Hemmelgarn (Div-ing), John Solberg (Back-stroke, Ind. Medley, But-terfly).

New depth– SR Micah Gertz, JRS George Grand-gennett, Chase Griffin, Ian Gunders, Ryan Hunt, Dylan Monroe, Max Nuebel, Adam Prins.

The Bluejackets took a big hit in their freestyle

and relays due to gradua-tion, including losing 2012 State entrant Benj Nault-Maurer (200 Free). Calvin Cicha is the top returning place-winner at sections after taking 3rd in the 100 Breaststroke and 3rd on the 200 Free Relay. Parker Brown made his first State trip in Diving after placing 4th in the section. Darren Codner was 8th in 7AA in both the 50 and 100 Free-

styles. Cody Hemmelgarn added 9th-place points in 7AA Diving. Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Gary Gotz– “With losing a large group of seniors last year, we are going to need our under-classmen to step up and fill some gaps this year. As usual, our numbers look good. We are going to need to build on varsity experi-ence quickly with a very young team.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks:

Monticello swam to its fourth-straight Mississippi 8 title last season, then kept rolling to finish 2nd in Class A State. Coach Gotz figures the Magic and St. Michael-Albertville will be bringing back the most ex-perience in the conference.

Anoka dominated last February’s Section 7AA

meet, defeating runner-up Forest Lake by 119 points in the final standings. The Tornadoes went on to

place 12th at Class AA State and will be strong again this winter.

2012 Cambridge-Isanti Gymnastics records: 3-2 Mississippi 8 Conference (3rd place), 6-2 overall du-als, Section 7AA champi-ons, 7th place at Class AA State Team

2013 Lineup features: Varsity returners– SR Abby Schlenker; FR Morgan Ur-ness, Tori Nelson; 8TH Han-nah Haight, Tayla Fletcher.

New depth– SR Nicole Morgan; JRS Sara Furlong, Shanyn France; SOPHS Courtney Durant, Kaeli Kortan; FR Larriane Acre-Kendall; 8TH Kayla Rakow-iecki, Molly Furlong, Pa-mela Coronado; 7TH Cathy Neary.

The Bluejackets roll into a new season with a new look on the appara-

tus since they return only three athletes who compet-ed at State last February: Morgan Urness, Hannah Haight and Tayla Fletcher. Varsity positions are up for grabs for the mix of return-ers and new members in the gym. Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Wendy Rooney– “It will be very exciting to see how many gymnasts rise to the challenge and step up to fill those spots. We are a very young team, and the girls are very ex-cited and motivated to prove they can continue the winning tradition of Bluejacket Gymnastics. We expect to show tremen-dous improvement from the start of the season to

the end. Beam should start out as one of our strongest events, but the other three will continue to improve dramatically as the season progresses.”

Last Saturday, the Blue-jackets opened with a 3rd-place 134.3 at the Perham Jackie Mann Invite. Ur-ness placed 6th in the All-Around and was 2nd on the Floor with a 9.2. Han-nah Haight returned from her wrist injury to take 6th on the Bars (8.55) and 10th on the Beam (8.6). Kaeli Kortan was 7th on the Bars (8.5), and Abby Schlenker scored an 8.55 on the Floor. The Yellowjackets, who fin-ished 4th at Class A State last season, won their meet with a 137.0 total.

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Coach Wendy Rooney–“I am anticipating that defending champion Big Lake will be extremely strong in the Mississippi 8. St. Francis and Centennial finished 2nd and 3rd at the Section 7AA last year and should have strong teams again this season. We are hosting sections this year and look forward to hav-ing a chance to defend our title in our own gym.”

Big Lake closed last season by taking 3rd in the Class A State Meet, led by this-year senior Court-ney Jensen (5th on State Bars).

2012 Cambridge-Isanti Boys Hockey records: 1-7 Mississippi 8 Conference (5th place), 5-21 overall, Lost in Section 7AA opening round

2013 Lineup features: Var-sity returners– SRS F Colton

Miller (13 points in 2012), D Preston Simon (6 pts), D T.J. Pagel (5 pts), F Mitch Renstrom, D Jon Dummer; JRS Elliott Simon (10 pts), D Matt Derby.

New depth– JRS G Frank Maslow, G Tim Schultz, Veeti Uuttera;

SOPHS F Collin Anderson, F Levi Miller.

The Bluejackets are out to an 0-3 start to the sea-son, recently running into swift Duluth teams East and Denfeld under first-year coach Mark Kissner. Early-season scoring has come from Collin Ander-son (hat trick against Den-feld), Mitch Renstrom, El-liott Simon and Levi Miller. Frank Maslow has logged most minutes in the net, with Tim Schultz backing at goaltender. Finnish ex-change student Veeti Uut-tera, “The Flying Finn,” adds speed up front. Ren-strom, T.J. Pagel and Pres-ton Simon are co-captains for the 2013 season. Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Mark Kissner– “We’ve been in our games so far. Now we just have to start playing three strong periods each night. To help that, we need to play sounder team defense– backchecking and hustling more.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks:

Rogers won its third-straight Mississippi 8 crown last year, extending their winning streak in con-ference games to 21. The Royals, who advanced to the Section 5A champion-ship before falling to Her-mantown, should still be the team to beat in the M-8.

Duluth East reached State out of Section 7AA for the fourth straight year last winter and finished 29-2 as the Class AA con-solation champions. The ‘Hounds are fast again. Former North Star Gordie Roberts takes over Elk Riv-er’s program, another 7AA swift team.

2012 Cambridge-Isanti-Mo-ra-Pine City Girls Hockey records: 3-4-1 Mississippi 8 Conference (3rd place), 8-15-3 overall, Lost in Section 7AA quarterfinals

2013 Lineup features: Var-sity returners– SRS D Erica Epsen (7 points in 2012), G Jessi Benson, D Becca Lil-lemo, F Becca Benson; JRS F Kristin Eustice (10 pts), F Jordan Ramey (8 pts), D Ally Erickson; SOPH Steph Can-non (10 pts).

The Bluejackets are 0-8 to start the new season un-der first-year head coach Bob Nelson, but they have fought hard including falling to visiting Willmar in a tight 1-0 game last Saturday. Goal-

ie Jessi Benson has an 84% save percentage through the early going of the season. Picking up the pace offen-sively will be a main task for the CIMPC girls.

Head Coach Bob Nelson on team depth– “We lost 14 players from last year’s team to graduation and other rea-sons. We have a lot of new players that have great po-tential including: 7TH F Aly Neibur and F Madison Oelk-ers; 8TH D Jenny Phillips, G Megan Thomas; Freshmen G Paige Anfinson, F Shelby Bosell, F Ally Eustice, F Ky-lie Guimont, D Katie Carlson and D Kassidy Westrom; SOPHS D Maria Carpenter and F Taylor Sunsdvold.

Positives for 2013 season: Coach Nelson– “We have a talented core of returning veterans from last year who will be tasked with the job of mentoring all the new play-ers. We have a lot of talent and energy on this team. Our players are learning what it takes to play at the varsity level.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks:

North Wright County is Coach Nelson’s pick to be the team to beat in the Mis-sissippi 8. The Riverhawks slipped past Buffalo in the standings last season.

In Section 7AA, Coach Nelson foresees Elk River, Cloquet and Duluth as the top power squads this win-ter. Grand Rapids-Greenway is the defending section champion.

Becca DahlmanGrade 12Becca Dahlman eclipsed the 4,000-point mark of her Braham Girls Basketball career when she scored 43 points in the win over Park Center at Saturday’s Breakdown Tip-Off Classic. Becca hit 19-of-19 at the line and added 20 rebounds and 3 assists against the Pirates. She is now 75 points away from Kevin Noreen’s all-time mark for any Minnesota high school basketball player.

Travis SwansonGrade 11Travis Swanson bolted out to a great start for Bluejacket Wrestling after opening weekend. Travis went 6-0 with 4 falls at 126 lbs. to help the Bluejackets sweep its six matches at White Bear Lake and Chisago Lakes. Coach Jennissen describes Travis as “raw-bone tough!”

Kristin BergmanGrade 9Despite an injury which limited her action in Game 1, Kristin Bergman still led Warrior Girls Basketball with 33 points and 22 rebounds when the team placed 2nd at the Coulee Invite last weekend. Kristin, named to the All-Tourney team, adds a spark to the Warriors and is already showing as a freshman she has the ability to carry the team when needed.

The Cambridge Christian basketball squads both went 2-1 to place 2nd at last week-end’s Coulee, Wisc. Invite. In the process, both War-rior teams knocked off CAL rival Rochester Area Home Schools in semifinal match-ups.

The CCS girls opened the tourney with a 47-34 win over Mountain Top Christian of Horicon, Wisc. Shelby Doble led with 13 points, Seble Doble scored 11, and Karly Wiek and Kellie Pedersen popped for 7 each.

In the Saturday noon semis, the Warriors jumped out to a 21-7 lead over RAHS en route to a 48-38 victory. Kristin Bergman came back from a Game 1 knee injury to pace CCS with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Pedersen added 9 points, with both Shelby Doble and Wiek scoring 8.

The championship went to Hope Lutheran of Winona 55-39 who hit seven three-point-ers in the first half. Bergman nailed five ‘3s’ to finish with 19 points for CCS.

• The Warrior boys be-gan the Coulee with a 87-55 win over Mountain Top when Jake Bergman and Peter Mar-ing led with 18 and 17 points, with Grant Taylor adding 14 and Anders Boyum scoring 9. In the semis, CCS held off the

Defenders 51-41 with more balanced scoring from Mar-ing (18), Justin Roble (13) and Bergman (11).

North Metro knocked off the Warriors 78-56 in Satur-day night’s finals. Maring (16), Roble (13) and Bergman (13) paced CCS again.

Braham Girls 75, Park Center 68

In front of the Breakdown Classic audience at Hopkins High Dec. 1, Becca Dahlman scored 43 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to lead in the de-feat of the Pirates. Kayla Nick-les scored 16 with 9 rebounds, Jaclyn Hollenkamp added 10 points and 8 rebounds, and Dani Braund scored 6.

C-I Girls B-Ball splits games

The Bluejacket girls won their second game of the sea-son by defeating 2012 Class AAA State entrant Chisago Lakes 66-51 Nov 29. Brynn Liljander led the attack with 25 points and 7 assists. Paige Muehlhauser added 10 points, with Amanda Hanson and Lily Porta both scoring 8 against the Wildcats.

“Chisago led throughout much of the first half as their 6’5” junior gave us trouble. It took us awhile to figure out how to defend her, then we

went on a nice run to over-come the deficit,” described C-I Coach Jody Ledahl. “Brynn played well again, set-ting up teammates. In the sec-ond half, our pressure started wearing them down, and we scored on a lot of break-aways.”

On Dec. 4, Section 7AAAA partner Forest Lake handed the C-I girls their first loss 65-49, holding a 36-23 lead at the half. Liljander (19) and Mue-hlhauser (18) led the Jacket scorers again.

C-I Boys Hockey 10, North Branch 2

The Bluejackets got in the win column by defeating the host Vikings Dec. 4. Collin An-derson notched his second-straight hat trick for C-I, scor-ing his first goal 46 seconds into the game. Jake Sylvester scored twice, with more Jack-et goals came from Mike Nolt, Elliott Simon, Veeti Uuttera and Mitch Renstrom. Uuttera finished with 3 assists, with Anderson and Renstrom both passing for 2 assists. Tim Schultz made 20 saves for the win in goal.

Minneapolis 6, CIMPC Girls Hockey 2

Bluejacket girls hockey dropped a Dec. 4 road game

to Minneapolis as the Novas slapped home four goals in the third period. Jordan Ra-mey and Jen Phillips netted the CIMPC goals, and Jessi Benson made 33 saves.

Jacket Boys Basketball falls twice

Cambridge-Isanti boys basketball opened the sea-son 0-2 after losses to two Section 7AAAA partners. In the Dec. 1 opener, visiting St. Francis logged a 72-44 victory with a solid advantage on the boards. Kyle McDonald scored 15 points for the Blue-jackets. Matt Swanson added 8 points and 6 rebounds, with 7 points coming from both Aaron Allen and Jake John-son.

On Dec. 4, host Forest Lake limited the Jackets to 14 first-half points, and kept go-ing to win 61-39.

Aitkin 52, RC-B Wrestling 27

The defending GRC cham-pion Gobblers opened the conference dual season with a road win at Rush City Dec. 4, creating a 46-6 lead after the 160 match. Dylan Mielke (113), Isaiah Johnson (170), Logan Johnson (195) and Chase Grant (285) all record-ed Tiger pins.

Bombers shut down Tigers in opener

By Greg HuntBraham continued its run

of smothering play in the Great River Conference when its new-look boys basketball team rolled past visiting Rush City 79-39 in the Dec. 4 sea-son-opener.

It took 1:30 into the game for the Bombers to get on the board when Shawn Hol-lenkamp took to the hole for a three-point play. The senior returning starter then fin-ished off a steal for a 5-2 edge, and Braham picked up steam to create a 51-22 advantage heading into the locker room.

Dealing with a ton of talent graduated from last year’s team, Coach Bob Vaughan showed his young lineup of

freshmen contributors– but he always had at least two veterans on the floor with the kids in the half to ease the way into the 2013 season.

Returning starter junior Zach Dahlman hit back-to-back field goals (one off an offensive board) to force an early Tiger timeout. Stigen then made a steal and fed freshman transfer Chris Ol-son for his first bucket in Braham. That began a stretch where the freshmen took over the scoring, which included Dahlman finding Connor Ts-chumper with a good feed.

Olson scored six more fast points includng knock-ing downing a three-pointer. Tschumper finished off an O-board and a good pass from freshman point John Larson to make it 27-14 Braham.

Returning to the floor, the

seniors took back over again when Dylan Altendorf drove for a bucket then popped con-secutive ‘3’ attempts, sand-wiched around four more points from Hollenkamp. Sti-gen’s steal and finish forced RC to call timeout again.

The Bombers had a nice punctuation mark to the half when Larson held control with 45 seconds to go, then he broke for the hoop and dished to Tschumper who fin-ished off his 12th point of the half– very pretty.

The Bombers limited the Tigers to 17 second-half points while Hollenkamp, Al-tendorf, Tschumper and Ol-son all finished with double-digit scoring in the victory.

Braham gets a good Sec-tion 7AA-preview test this Fri-day when they travel to Mora.

Cambridge-Isanti’s new lineup attacked the mats for six wins in the wrestling squad’s opening action of the 2013 season.

At Friday’s White Bear Lake Duals, the Bluejackets began by thumping Virginia 84-0 with 12 falls and Mahto-medi 60-24. That set up the feature match between 3rd-ranked C-I and the 10th-ranked Bears.

Brady Kuntz stuck his 106 foe, and Travis Swanson got a late three-point nearfall to win 9-7, but White Bear later took a 17-10 lead. Nate Nassif began the Jacket rally with a 3-0 win at 145 which was fol-lowed by pins from Travis Holt at 152 and Codie Auren at 160.

The Bears’s 11-5 decision at 171 had them within 23-20, but Cody Skog answered with a quick stick at 182. Da-kota Johnson’s 3-0 decision at 195 and Kyle Chromy’s 7-1 win at 220 sealed the win.

State medalists Travis Holt and Cody Skog, along with Ty Torgerson, are all ranked in the top-four of their weight classes; those three eclipsed the 100-career win milestone last

season. C-I Wrestling graduated nine seniors from the program, in-cluding Clayton Jennissen (3rd @ State) who is now wrestling at St. Cloud State. Positives for 2013 season: Coach Neil Jennissen– “We have a pretty nice balance falling into place for our lineup this season. We have a strong senior crew backed by a strong junior crew. We have been a top-five team in the state for a long time now, and the experience we have coming back this year should keep us in that mix.”

The Bluejackets opened the season with six wins at last week-

end’s White Bear Lake Quadran-gular and Chisago Lakes Duals, with Coach Jennissen plotting 24 different wrestlers into varsity matches. The program will be sent through another tough schedule which includes major December events the Minnesota Christmas Tourney in Rochester and the Rumble on the Red in Fargo.

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AAA Outlooks:

St. Michael-Albertville is on a four-year run atop the Mississippi 8 and begins ranked No. 2 AAA this season. The Knights feature State champ Tommy Thorn down

low, Mark Kessler at 285– and a brutal mix of five State medalist returners in between. 2012 ‘AA’ State entrant Monticello will be in the M-8 mix with the Bluejackets and STMA.

The Knights are also the de-fending Section 7AAA champions after defeating the C-I boys in yet another exciting rivalry match last February. STMA finished as Class AAA runners-up to Apple Valley for the second-straight season. Balanced Coon Rapids (ranked 5th) and Forest Lake (ranked 9th) are more contend-ers in the always-stacked Section 7AAA.
