The settlements name Ilulissat means ‘icebergs’. You have a guided Green- landic culture and history walk of this isolated frontier town in the afternoon. You visit the local church, the fishermen in the harbour and the authentic hunters at their trading market Braedtet. Cod, Salmon, seal, reindeer, caribou, Musk Ox are on sale here. Greenlandic people most- ly lived in small settlements along the coast until today’s generation. After breakfast this morning you head out by boat to the traditional settlement of Ooseestsut which lies in an idyllic set- ting and is not accessible by road. Even with its tiny population it has a its own church, school and restaurant. Its struc- tures reflect Dutch colonial times when Dutch whale hunters and their families were the principal residents. This even- ing a wonderful tour highlight is a mid- night cruise on Ice Fjord. The midnight sun lasts from the end of May until the end of July. Sailing at night with the sun still above the horizon is a fascinating and unique experience as the icebergs are illuminated in a display of pastel colours.
