Ice Hockey Arena Lighting Retrofit Ice Arenas are a good example of the varied benefits of both LED lighting and design. The client DAGR worked with in this particular case originally had 108 x 1,000W Metal Halide fixtures directed at the ice surface. Not only does upgrading to LEDs result in large lightingJbased energy savings, but also reduces the thermal load on the ice due to the high operating temperatures of metal halides, generating further savings through lowered refrigeration demand. Several different options were presented, with two of them included in the following pages. The layouts provide EndJofJ Life illuminance levels (at 70% Light Loss Factor (LLF)) designed to recommendations for RegionalJLevel Ice Hockey (500 lux), and Televised NationalJLevel Ice Hockey (1,000 lux). Several renders of the 1,000 lux option are included below, as well as a pseudoJcolour rendering of the ice surface with red representing the requirement of 1,000 lux. When producing the lighting layout, factors such as reflections into the crowd and glare were taken into consideration. Each light was angled to make optimal use of its output and provide uniform illuminance across the ice surface. Through careful design, the lighting count was reduced from the original 108 x 1,000W Metal Halides to 74 x 400W MP700 DAGR LEDs for the 1,000 lux layout and 46 for the 500 lux layout.
