Oh Captain My Captain: New York Rangers prospect Braden Schneider has been named the 64th Captainin franchise history. He takes the reins from long-time Wheat King Connor Gutenberg. Ridly Greig, MarcusSekundiak, Lynden McCallum and Ben McCartney make up the rest of the leadership group.
Veteran Blueline: Six of the eight Wheat Kings defensemen are returning veterans and have combined for690 games of WHL experience between them.
New Sheriff In Town: Don MacGillivray assumes the role of Head Coach, the first time he’s held that title inthe WHL since 1997 when he held the interim tag with the Prince Albert Raiders. MacGilivray has spent thelast four seasons as the Wheat Kings primary Assistant Coach.
Brotherly Love: The Wheat Kings have four players with brothers playing in the WHL this season. Bradenand Marek Schneider (Saskatoon), Riley and Brad Ginnell (Moose Jaw), Jonny and Carson Lambos(Winnipeg) and Nate and Noah Danielson (Medicine Hat)
Saddle Up: Todd Miller joins the Wheat Kings staff after 11 seasons as an Assistant Coach with the OHL’sBarrie Colts. The former New York Islander draft pick was the late Dale Hawerchuk’s right hand man inBarrie, and finished last season as the interim Head Coach.
Changing of the guard: After 34 years with the Brandon Wheat Kings as player, coach, GM and owner,Kelly McCrimmon and his family sold the hockey club in September. McCrimmon’s first arrived in Brandon in1978 for his rookie season in the WHL.
Uncle Doug: Jake Chiasson’s uncle Doug Lidster played 897 NHL games with Vancouver, St. Louis, NewYork and Dallas. He also spent five years as an assistant coach with the Canucks and the AHL’s TexasStars. He is currently the coach of the Victory Honda U16 team in Plymouth, Michigan.
Runs In the Family: It’s no secret that Ridly Greig’s father Mark enjoyed a long career in the NHL andEurope, but Ridly’s two siblings have put together impressive hockey careers as well. His sister Dara playswith the University of Wisconsin (NCAA), while the eldest sister Kyra plays with the University of Calgary(USports)
March Madness: Braden Schneider’s cousin Ja’Shon Henry is a starting forward for Bradley University(NCAA Basketball). He’s averaged 8 points per game in 83 Division I collegiate games.
Flin Flon Royalty: Riley Ginnell began this season with the SJHL’s Flin Flon Bombers, a place close to hisfamily’s heart. His grandfather Paddy has a banner in the rafters at “The Zoo” and was one of the mostlegendary players / coaches in Bombers history. He helped lead the Bombers to the 1957 Memorial Cuptitle.
Something in the Water: Braden Schneider is now the third player from the town of Big River, SK to sign anNHL contract. Jim Nielson paved the way in 1962 kicking off a 16 year NHL career, 12 of which with the NYRangers. Schneider’s distant cousin Barry Pederson played 701 NHL games and was a part of the biggesttrade in Boston Bruins history, as the B’s sent Cam Neely to Vancouver for the Big River native.
