ICCO WORKS WITH ENTERPRISING PEOPLE TOWARDSA WORLD WITHOUT POVERTY, INJUSTICE AND EXCLUSION
ICCO SOUTH EAST ASIA & PACIFIC
ICCO is an international development organization with roots in the
Netherlands. We have 7 regional offices in the world and work in 44
countries. The regional office in South East Asia & Pacific has more then 300
projects in 6 countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea,
Philippines and Vietnam.
MISSION
Our mission is to end poverty, injustice and exclusion to establish a full and
dignified life for all. Based on equality, co-responsibility and respect for
diversity we seek to cooperate with organizations and companies that feel
connected to our values: compassion, justice and stewardship.
PROGRAMS
Through entrepreneurial partnerships we empower people to fulfill
their economic, social and civil rights. We connect people, organizations,
companies, knowledge and innovative ideas in order to achieve our mission.
But we can’t do this by ourselves. Therefore we focus on four interrelated
programs: Fair Economic Development, Food & Nutrition Security, Fair
Climate and Conflict Transformation & Democratization.

ICCO has been working in South East Asia & Pacific since the 1970s. Centered on agrarian reform and rural democratization our program has made significant contributions in people empowerment, and the re-distribution of thousands of hectares of land to small farmers and indigenous people. These efforts for more social justice are the strong foundations of our current program on Fair Economic Development which focuses on connecting poor producers and farmers to value chains.

Women in South East Asian countries are often excluded from decision-making structures: from household level until politics. Encouraging female leadership, making government officials aware of gender equality, microfinance for women and actively involving women in peace processes are examples of our strategy. ICCO & Kerk in Actie empower organizations that focus on lady farmers, because we believe that investing in women benefits a whole family.

Climate change is considered one of the most important problems of this century. Especially countries like the Philippines and Indonesia are severely hit by the consequences of climate change. The main cause of global warming is the world’s growing carbon footprint. The aim of the ICCO Fair Climate program is to reduce CO2 emissions of rich countries through carbon trade. We support poor forest communities to increase their income by introducing carbon credits. We also encourage them to produce non-timber-forest-products as an alternative for timber and deforestation.

We encourage fair and sustainable trade in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands through our partnership with the Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand. The ICCO funded project Fair Trade Promotion aims to tackle the challenges of small producers to access international markets. We support farmers and agricultural businesses to achieve a Fair trade Certification™ for their products. This certificate gives the security of stable prices and long-term trading partnerships. Around 8.600 small farmers are benefitting from the ICCO project.

Connecting poor producers, workers and small, medium and large enterprises to production chains is the focus of the Fair Economic Development program of ICCO in South East Asia & Pacific. Together with the private sector and other partners we make existing value chains like muscovado sugar in the Philippines more sustainable. ICCO organizes and strengthens farmer and producer cooperatives in their engagement in value chains.

People in countries like Myanmar and Cambodia are struggling to feed their families. Every person on earth - man, woman and child - has the right to have access to adequate food. Improving the food and nutrition security of rural households is at the core of our Food and Nutrition Security program in South East Asia & Pacific. ICCO supports poor producers to sustainably increase their production for a better income and for better nutrition.
