What is IBM

Tivoli Storage Productivity Center?

Part of IBM’s Tivoli set of software to provide Integrated

Service Management

Specific to Storage Infrastructure,

Supporting IBM and non-IBM devices and networks

To help Storage Administrators be more productive

and effective

With all functions centralized into a “Single Pane of

Glass”

For convenience, I will use the abbreviation “TPC”to refer to IBM Tivoli® Storage Productivity Center

Note: IBM, HP and Quantum also use the term “TPC” to refer to Technology Provider Companies in the LTO Consortium. Do not confuse the term TPC with the Transaction Processing Performance Council (tpc.org) a non-profit corporation, nor the Tournament Players Club (tpc.com) subsidiary of the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA)

IBM StorWatch (1990s)

• In the 1990s, there was IBM StorWatch

– Monitored performance and replication of the ESS 800

• Feedback from clients: – “We don’t want a

Stor-Watch, …we want a Stor-Do!”

– Manage more than one kind of disk array!

Like having a personal “X-Ray Machine” to help understand and identify

problems with your storage

The SNIA Storage Management

Initiative Specification (SMI-S)

• It is intended to be the unifying factor between the objects that must be managed in a storage network and the tools used to manage them.

• It is the result of a collaborative effort
