Power and cooling advantages for IBM Intelligent Cluster
The IBM energy management portfolio tackles the challenge to increase powerand thermal efficiency and help reduce costs on many levels. Inside the system, all System x servers start with Calibrated Vectored CoolingTM technology. Thisfeature allows dual paths of air to each component, helping to improve uptimeand longevity, and reducing wasteful air movement and heat generation. It can becoupled with more energy-efficient power supplies.
For clusters within a rack, System x servers are designed to work at full density in awell-planned rack solution. They can also operate at extended temperature rangesto keep the system up and running, even in some cases in extreme temperature andmany potential failure conditions. IBM rack-based cluster solutions are engineeredto optimize air flow and prevent undesirable recirculation within the rack, so thatservers can run in optimal temperature conditions.
IBM blade-based clusters enable you to pack more processors into the same powerand cooling envelope, as well as better utilize floor space and right-size data centerdesign. With BladeCenter servers, less power per processor means more processingcapacity per kilowatt. The BladeCenter runs cooler to deliver greater reliability.
For dense data center environments, IBM delivers smart rack-level heat solutions, such as the super-efficient IBM Rear Door Heat eXchanger. The water-cooled doorcan dissipate heat generated from the back of the rack to reduce the overall roomtemperature. With this combination of benefits at the server and data center level,IBM systems can offer strong power and cooling benefits to IBM Intelligent Clusterclients.
IBM Rear Door Heat eXchanger (32R0712)
The Rear Door Heat eXchanger for IBM Enterprise Racks helps keep your growingdata center at a safer temperature without adding air conditioning units. Thisunobtrusive solution brings more cooling capacity to areas where the heat isgreatest, around racks of servers with multiple, more powerful processors.
Design simplicity delivers efficient cooling
The size and appearance of the Rear Door Heat eXchanger are similar to those ofa standard rack acoustical 66 cm (26 in.) wide door. It adds a mere 10 cm (4 in.)to the depth of a rack, yet a single door may remove up to 50,000 Btu of heat (orapproximately 15 kW). The door is designed to attach to a 42U-high IBM EnterpriseRack and swings wide to provide unrestricted access to electrical components.Sealed coils, filled with above-dewpoint, chilled water, passively remove a significantamount of the heat generated in a fully populated rack. This cooling efficiency mayhelp eliminate the need for additional ac power and the associated construction cost.

Benefits
Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to enhance theWarranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reportingand uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wastedtime monitoring the "symptoms," diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBMSupport to open a problem record. Its 24 x 7 monitoring and reporting mean nomore dependence on human intervention or off-hours customer personnel whenerrors are encountered in the middle of the night.

Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool securelytransmits either via the Internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem, and can be configuredto communicate securely through gateways to provide customers a single point ofexit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agentdoes not enable IBM to call into a customer's system. System inventory informationis stored in a secure database, which is protected behind IBM firewalls. It is viewableonly by the customer and IBM. The customer's business applications or businessdata is never transmitted to IBM.
More accurate reporting: Since system information and error logs areautomatically uploaded to the IBM Support center in conjunction with the servicerequest, customers are not required to find and send system information, decreasingthe risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error datais run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles areappended to the problem record.
Customized support: Using the IBM ID entered during activation, customers canview system and support information in the "My Systems" and "Premium Search"sections of the Electronic Support website at
http://www.ibm.com/support/electronic
My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software usinginformation collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reportsare available for any system associated with the customer's IBM ID. PremiumSearch combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agentinformation, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase.Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has beencollected from your system, customers are able to see search results that applyspecifically to their systems.
