July 13, 2019: The participants of the 3rd and 4th batch of diploma in Family Managed Business, CEE, received their Diplomas in a ceremony held at the IBA. Senior Marketing Manager, Pakistan Mercantile Exchange Ms. Sobia Ashraf briefed the audience on the working of the PMEX. Ms. Ashraf was joined by Assistant Manager Communications PMEX, Mr. Shabbir Kazmi and chief guest and CEO Medisure, Dr. Kaiser Waheed. The participants belonged to diverse sectors including pharmaceuticals, fabrication, trading, real estate, logistics, FMCG, textile, event management, etc. Diploma awarding ceremony of Family Managed Business CEE Gazette Going the extra mile July, 2019: In order to increase the visibility and outreach of the recent MBA graduating batch, the CDC has started publishing the profiles on its official LinkedIn forum. This initiative will help graduates in highlighting their academic and professional journey to all the followers of the CDC's LinkedIn forum, increasing their network by connecting to diverse people and organizations, and providing them with an opportunity to collaborate with scholars, learning partners, higher education institutions and funding agencies. Launch of online application for recommendation letter July, 2019: An online application for requesting internship recommendation letters has been introduced by the CDC. Students can now request for either a general or a customized recommendation letter required for their social and corporate/research internships. This system is launched to automate and simplify the procedure and has been made available on the Student Facilitation System (SFS). CDC Updates IBA Career Development Center July, 2019: Team CDC visited various companies to discuss multiple areas of possible collaboration and to enhance the working relationship with the existing corporate partners. These meetings were also intended to introduce the CDC services and programs such as Career Excursion, Career Counselling Clinics, Corporate Connect Series, IBA Job Portal etc. to the corporate partners including Brainchild Communications, Ideas by Gul Ahmed, A.A. Panelists included renowned Economist and former Advisor to the Chief Minister Sindh, Dr. Kaiser Bengali; Professor, Department of Economics, IBA Karachi, Dr. Qazi Masood Ahmed; former chairperson for Sindh Board of Investment and CEO, Oracle Power, Ms. Naheed Memon; Executive Director Legal and Company Secretary at Unilever Pakistan Mr. Aman Ghanchi, and Tax Policy Advisor Sindh Revenue Board, Mr. Mushtaque Kazmi. The panel unanimously agreed that the solution to Pakistan’s fiscal deficit lies in curtailing non-development government expenditure, and not raising more taxes. The panelists argued that the economy is in recession, and increasing taxes at such a time further drives down growth and leaves very little headroom for the government to stimulate the economy. July 15-18, 2019: A four-day long Quantum Information Summer School (QISS) 2019 took place at the main campus from July 15-18, 2019. The brainchild of Dr. Jibran Rashid, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Computer Science, saw experts from across the globe, highlight recent developments and challenges in the field of quantum information and computation. Students and professors from 19 Pakistani universities used the the second iteration of QISS as an opportunity to learn and discuss ideas with Director, Institute for Quantum Science and Technology, University of Calgary, Dr. Barry Sanders; Group Leader YIRG Young Independent Researcher Group, Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information Vienna, Dr. Ämin Baumeler; Postdoctoral research fellow, University of Queensland, Dr. Fabio Costa, and Postdoctoral researcher, Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics, Dr. Denis Rosset. July 25, 2019: The CEIF participated in the 8th Islamic Finance Expo and Conference as Knowledge Partner while Associate Dean, FBA, Dr. Huma Baqai and Program Director M.S. Islamic Banking and Finance, Dr. Irum Saba moderated sessions during the conference. Dr. Baqai moderated the Islamic Banking 2025 – Challenges and Opportunities session, where awareness about Islamic banking, digitalization of banking, Sukuk issuance, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) financing were discussed.

Dr. Saba moderated a session on Leading in a Disruptive World: Revolutionizing Islamic Finance which focused on fintech and digitalization in the financial sector.

Remembering the icons of journalism

July 19, 2019: The CEJ honored the memory of veteran journalists Mr. Idrees Bakhtiar and Mr. Anil Datta by organizing a gathering of friends and colleagues. The participants eulogized the contributions made by these iconic men and discussed how their work would be best celebrated by the journalistic community through professionalism and setting high standards in quality of work and ethics.

Close colleagues of the two journalists spoke at the event including former Information Minister Mr. Javed Jabbar, journalist Mr. Qaiser Mehmood, Secretary Karachi Press Club Mr. Arman Sabir, President of Karachi Press Club, Mr. Imtiaz Faran, The News International reporter, Zia Ur Rehman and journalist, Afia Salam.

Non-fiction Creative Writing workshop for teens

July 17-19, 2019: The CEJ conducted a non-fiction creative writing workshop for high school students. The lead trainer for the workshop was Lecturer, Ms. Muna Khan. The workshop aimed to teach students different styles of writing. Participants were given a hands on experience on how to write profiles, letters and personal narratives.

Depicting Real issues in Reel life

July 25, 2019: The CEJ conducted a Masterclass for Storytelling and Film where representation of social issues as a cinematic experience was discussed in detail. Editor lifestyle desk Express Tribune, Abdul Rafay Mehmood served as the moderator while the speakers for the event included American Film Producer, Alix Madigan and Senior Director of Film Education and International Initiatives at Film Independent Maria Raquel Bozzi.

The panel discussion revolved around the portrayal of communal issues in movies in different ways and how commercial and indie movies may depict a similar story from a different angle but deliver the same resounding message. The impact of the movie Spotlight and the reaction it garnered was also touched upon, and also how it may aid other filmmakers who may want to incorporate similarly somber themes into their work.

Reporting on the Power Sector and Climate Change workshop

July 22-23, 2019: The CEJ conducted a two-day workshop on Reporting on the Power Sector and Climate Change. The lead trainer for the workshop was a senior Journalist and former Bureau Chief Bloomberg Southasia Edward Joseph Lane while guest speakers included freelance journalist, Afia Salam; former MD PEPCO Tahir Basharat Cheema and Director CEJ Kamal Siddiqi.

The workshop focused on the historical overview of the power sector in Pakistan along with its present condition. The speakers spoke on non-traditional journalists and how they would enter the matrix of the journalistic field. Sourcing and authenticating a source in the age of social media was also discussed as well as ethics in energy news coverage.

CEJ Highlights

July 15, 2019: The members of the founding team at the renowned daily, The News International gathered at the Centre for Excellence in Journalism, (CEJ) to unveil a copy of the framed front page of the first issue of the newspaper. The paper was launched on February 11, 1991 with Mr. Ghazi Salahuddin as its first editor. Mr. Salahuddin along with Ms. Sahar Ali – the ex-staffer who donated the copy – unveiled the copy of the newspaper in the CEJ newsroom. Staffers from the paper joined their former colleagues at the ceremony where they shared their memories about the newspaper.

CED Corner

July 14, 2019: The second cycle of Mothers’ Entrepreneurship Camp 2019 was conducted under the aegis of the Aman CED in Lahore. The Camp was designed for mothers to help them unleash their entrepreneurial potential, develop important life skills and values. The program highlights the importance of ethical, environmental and social sensitivities for preparing the future generation. MEC has been conducted in Lahore and Karachi, training 41 and 95 participants respectively.

Nurturing the nurturerJune 25-July 24, 2019: The Aman CED in collaboration with Planning and Development Department Government of Balochistan, UNDP Pakistan and University of Balochistan conducted an Entrepreneurship training program for 100 youth in Quetta.

Empowering Youth

July 24, 2019: The NTHP team organized a talk on the book titled, The Economy of Modern Sindh: Opportunities Lost and Lessons for the Future, co-authored by NTHP alumnus, Mr. Nadeem Hussain, Professor Aijaz A. Qureshi and Dr. Ishrat Husain. The event was attended by lead industry practitioners, IBA students and faculty. Syed Mohibullah Shah, a renowned columnist, was the chief guest at the occasion.

The session culminated with a question and answer session. Later, the chief guest along with the other guests presented copies of the book to the NTHP scholars.
