IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches Year 1 - Summer Packet Dear IB Mathematics Student, The following summer assignment is designed to prepare you for the forthcoming IB Math SL course. As you might be aware the IB Math SL course is rigorous and is designed to promote and develop internationally minded individuals who strive to be inquirers, thinkers, communicators and reflective, among many other fine qualities. The following packet of questions is designed to help you develop a sense of what it will take to earn a diploma from the International Baccalaureate Program. You will need to research topics [i.e. find instructional videos via YouTube, Khan Academy, Brightstorm, etc.] You may also learn that mathematical reasoning is not limited to formulas and calculations that simply ask you to find . Your ability to organize your thoughts … use problems solving techniques such as: ● Draw a Diagram, or Picture ● Look for a Pattern ● Make a Systematic List, or Table ● Reason Out Loud, Use Verbal Strategies ● Work Backwards I personally suggest that modeling the problem through drawing it out and talking it out works best. I found that it has the greatest impact and therefore the most significant potential for leading you to a solution. This packet is to be handed in to your IB Mathematics teacher (Mrs. Svoboda) at the end of the fourth full day of the school year. All work must be shown on separate paper ... attached to the packet. Failure to show work will result in a lower grade. Completion of this packet is worth one-half of a major test grade and will be counted in your first marking period grade. Please feel free to contact me anytime over the summer. That being said … please take the time to research the topic before contacting me. It will be the first thing I ask you, “What strategies have you attempted and which websites have you reviewed before contacting me?” Perseverance and intelligent research will be vital to your successfully earning an International Baccalaureate Diploma.
