St. Edmund Preparatory High School Summer Assignment IB 20 th Century World History As we enter the 20162017 school year, the IB HOTA class will transition from the American perspective of historical events to that of a more global perspective. We will be studying WWI and WWII in depth along with the period in between the two World Wars. We will also be studying two civil wars, the Chinese Civil War and the Spanish Civil War. None of these events will be studied in a fish bowl, and you will quickly see how the authoritarian rulers of Europe and Asia had similar nationalistic goals that will take them down an interconnected path that ultimately leads to the devastation of parts of Europe and Asia. Therefore, the main part of your summer assignment will be a continuation of the study of events that occurred in the period before World War I. Go back to your Keylor prologue, refresh your memory about his thesis and his perspective on the events leading up to the Great War. Mr. O’Donnell and I would like to present you with another perspective on the causes of World War I from historians Richard F. Hamilton and Holger H. Herwig from their book Decisions for War, 19141917. Your Task: 1. Read the accompanying chapter from Decisions for War, 19141917. 2. Take detailed hand written notes in the first pages of a 3 subject spiral notebook dedicated solely for IB 20 th Century World History, with the heading “The Causes of World War I”. This will count as a 25 point HW grade. 3. Develop a 3 page essay. Part I: Identify and clearly state the author’s thesis regarding the causes of the Great War. This should be stated BEFORE you begin your actual essay and clearly labeled “Hamilton and Herwig thesis” Part II: The essay – Many historians claim that MAIN was the sole reason behind the causes of the Great War. Hamilton and Herwing claim that MAIN is an incomplete assessment of the events that caused WWI. To what extent was MAIN the sole cause of World War I? You must use evidence from the Keylor prologue, the Hamilton and Herwig reading in your essay. You are also permitted to bring in other research if needed. MLA format must be used along with parenthetical citations. If you use research other than Keylor or Hamilton and Herwig and works cited page must be included. The IB History Paper 3 Rubric will be used to assess this essay which will count as a test.

Summer Assignment

IB 20th Century World History

As we enter the 2016‐2017 school year, the IB HOTA class will transition from the American perspective of historical events to that of a more global perspective. Herwig from their book Decisions for War, 1914‐1917.  Your Task: 1. Read the accompanying chapter from Decisions for War, 1914‐1917. 2. Take detailed hand written notes in the first pages of a 3 subject spiral notebook dedicated      solely for IB 20th Century World History, with the heading “The Causes of World War I”.      This will count as a 25 point HW grade.   3. Develop a 3 page essay.

  Part II: The essay –

Many historians claim that MAIN was the sole reason behind the causes of the Great War.
