DETAILED PROGRAMME REPORT
Publication Division, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli and
Indian Academic Researchers Association, Tiruchirappalli has jointly
organized a One week workshop on Research Methodology and SPSS held
during 15th March 2017 to 21st March 2017 at Department of Women’s
Studies, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli.
Dr.N.Murugeswari, Ph.D. Workshop Director, Professor of Women’s
Studies, Director (i/c), Publication Division, Bharathidasan University,
Tiruchirappalli had welcomes the chief guest, resource persons, organizing
members and participants of the workshop. She noticed that, the resource
persons for the technical sessions were invited from various disciplines and
universities. She summarized the process and difficulty in the selection of
fifty participants from all over the country out of more than hundred
applications received. More than 50 participants from various universities,
colleges, departments were participated in the inaugural session.
Dr.S.Iyyampillai, Professor of Economics & Principal (i/c), BDU -
Constituent Arts & Science College, Navalurkuttapattu, Tiruchirappalli
presided over the presidential address in the inaugural session of the one
Page 7
week workshop on Research Methodology and SPSS. He advised the
participants to utilize this workshop which will helpful to gain more
knowledge on research methodology and the statistical software SPSS. He
also quoted the various research activities and projects done by Indian
Academic Researchers Association, the sponsor of the one week workshop.
Dr.C.Paramasivan, Workshop Organizing Secretary, Assistant
Professor of Commerce, Periyar E.V.R. College, Tiruchirappalli has adorned
the dais by his presentation. He informed the participants that such
workshops are apart from the usual classes on research methodology. He
highlights the importance of the workshop, present situation in research
methodology, need of statistical tool packages in the field of science and
social science. He underlines that IARA promotes interdisciplinary
workshops and conferences that makes a comfort in research activities.
Dr.R.Mangaleswaran, Member-Syndicate, Associate Professor of Social
Work, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli in his inaugural address,
he highlighted that there is an increasing demand and significance of such
workshops on research methodology as evident from the tremendous
responses from researchers of various institutions. He cautioned the
participants, most of them are in the initial stage of their Ph.D research that
there should not be an over emphasis on quantitative methods. He express
the significance of the identification of problem in any research work will
reflect the overall quality of research work to be carried out.
In the first technical session of the workshop, Dr.S.Iyyampillai spoke
on ‘Research Methodology - A New Approach’. In his presentation he
Page 8
highlighted the implication of knowledge that should be harnessed for the
betterment of society and universities are the pivotal spaces for creation and
diffusion of research knowledge. He proposed to establish and strengthen
the Research Eco System as a tool to facilitate the interaction between
various stakeholders of research methodology in social science. He raised
concerns regarding the challenges faced by researchers in India that include
lack of comprehensive research policies, inadequate funding, shortage of
quality faculty, inadequate training, over burden faculties etc., He concluded
that universities should not support any production process, but accelerate
knowledge. So there is a need to evolve a flexible, reachable and effective
system.
In the second technical session on Identification of Research Problem
and Literature Survey Dr.D.Kumar, Associate Professor of Economics, Jamal
Mohamed College, Tiruchirappalli has mesmerised the participants with an
academically charged and thought provoking lecture. Keeping in mind that
majority of the participants are still formulating their research topics, he
shared his own experience of writing a thesis. Literature review is one of the
prominent sources of formulation of research question. He said three
principles are essential for quality literature survey: principle of economy of
time, principle of economy of words, principle of economy of references.
On the second day of the workshop started with the insightful lecture
by Dr.S.Senthilnathan, Associate Professor of Educational Technology,
Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. For him the key for a quality
work is ‘join writing to research’ which means that the researcher should
Page 9
not treat writing as a mopping up activity. It is a general tendency to focus
on reading than writing in the process of carrying out of research. He said
that scholars generally struggle with the issue of topic for the research. To
grapple with this problem, he suggested the participants to always make a
reading list of salient work in the broad area of their interest.
Prof.M.Balasubramanian, Assistant Professor of Statistics, Periyar
E.V.R. College, Tiruchirappalli has enlightened the participants with the
role, usage and functionalities of the various statistical tools in research. He
discussed the types of data and scale measurement. Keeping in mind that
most of the participants are afresh to research methodology procedures, he
familiarized the participants with the various software that are often used in
research work like excel, SPSS, SAS etc. At the end he indicates the
importance of accurate measurement as the most fundamental aspect of
any research.
The training session was conducted by Dr.R.Balasubramani, Assistant
Professor of LIS, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli on ‘Publishing
Ethics and Plagiarism’. In this he demonstrated that how the citation
databases are working includes web of science, scopus, google scholar,
science direct etc., and explains how to avoid and get overcome the
plagiarism. In the next session, Dr.M.Surulinathi, spoke about the ‘Open
Source Educational Resources and Google Technology’ and he lecture about
various resources like researchgate, academia, linkedin, google scholar,
mendeley, researcherid etc., used for research purposes. Followed by
Dr.B.Jeyapragash, University Librarian, Bharathidasan University who
Page 10
discussed about ‘Reference Management System’ and explained the different
avenues available to researchers today and how technology will change the
vision for future studies. Technology penetration has unleashed different
dimensions for researchers and while developing the research concept, the
researcher and supervisor should think beyond the current scenario.
Prof. Moges Tadesse Bedane, Dean of ICDS, Ambo University, Ethiopia
was delivered a very informative lecture on the topic ‘Sampling and its
Techniques’. According to him proper sampling size is essential for the
quality of research. Both probability and non-probability sampling methods
should be employed meticulously and cautiously. Any error may occur in
the process of sampling may affect the results and conclusions severely. At
the last he discussed about the sample size of research work and how to
calculate it.
The fourth day of the workshop was devoted to the parametric
analysis through SPSS in social sciences keeping in mind that many
participants are opting for parametric analysis in their research work. So
the session was started with the discussion on ‘Parametric Analysis’ by
Dr.T.Tirupathi, Assistant Professor & Head of Commerce, Government Arts
College, Salem. He discussed various kinds of scales that are used in social
sciences for measuring subjective variables. He carried out practical work
with participants using SPSS. He argued the validity of questionnaire in
SPSS and other criteria for testing the reliability and validity also.
The final four sessions were started with the lecture of
Mr.MM.Shankar, Programme Mentor, Centre for Applied Research and
Page 11
Educational Services, Bangalore has discussed ‘Multi variant Analysis and
SEM using SPSS’ through the practical exercises of SPSS. He told the
various statistical analysis like frequency tabulation of data, cleaning of
data, cross tabulation for two or more variable, chi square test for the
nominal and ordinal data, finding the descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA,
non-parametric methods, correlation and regression. He discussed how to
relate the hypothesis and objective of research and how to do the statistical
analysis. Hands on training were carried out for each method by the
participants. He elaborates deeply in framing of hypothesis and how to
perform an analysis for it and as well as the interpretation of the output.
