Goal – provide up-to-date information on technical features
and design parameters of Advanced NPPs
IAEA Definition of Advanced NPPs [TECDOC-936]
• advanced nuclear plant designs - designs of current interest for which
improvements over their predecessors or existing designs are
expected
• evolutionary designs - advanced designs that achieve
improvements over existing designs through small to moderate
modifications, with a strong emphasis on maintaining design
proveness to minimize technological risks.
• innovative designs - advanced designs which incorporate radical
conceptual changes in design approaches or configuration in
comparison with existing practice. Substantial research and
development efforts, feasibility tests, and a prototype or
demonstration plant are probably required prior to the commercial
deploymentRef: IAEA, Terms for describing new advanced nuclear power plants, TECDOC-936 (1997)

• TECDOCs needed to be revised and re-published as significant advances were made, for example,
in Design, Development, Certification; or new
designs were developed
• With ARIS, any Design Description can be easily updated whenever advances are made

IAEAIAEA’’s intent is to present balanced and s intent is to present balanced and
• Design Descriptions are provided by Design Organizations• Then reviewed by IAEA• to identify technical items needing clarification• edited slightly • to remove overly commercial statements • (if necessary) to improve clarity and English • safety levels, costs, projected construction times & commercialization dates are presented as “goals” or
“claims” of the design organization – to be clear that
IAEA has not reviewed / endorsed these claims
• Design Descriptions are loaded onto ARIS following Design Organization’s clarification of technical questions and
concurrence with editing suggestions

ARIS can sort according to:
• Reactor Type (PWR, BWR, GCR, ....)• Coolant• Moderator• Spectrum (thermal, fast)• Thermal capacity (MWt)• Electrical capacity (MWe)• Design Status (e.g. conceptual, basic design, detailed design, site specific,...., under construction, etc -- IAEA
Further development of ARISFurther development of ARIS
NEAR TERM - Expand the content of ARIS:
• Obtain Design Descriptions for advanced designs not yet in ARIS,review and load them into ARIS *
• Develop a “Current Trends” tab in ARIS – a summary overview of global development of advanced NPPs
CONTINUING:
• Maintain up-to-date Design Descriptions - Update appropriate sections of each Design Description as progress is made (in design, related R&D, certification, licensing, construction, etc) *
• Increase awareness of ARIS to support Technology Training and Education in Member States
LONGER TERM
• Examine how ARIS can be expanded to include more detailed information for “Technology Assessment and Selection”
* By IAEA’s Technical Officer working through “Design Description Contacts” at the Design Organizations
