WELCOMEWelcome to the Ceramics Expo Show Preview 2019Together with our 300+ exhibitors from all over the world, and a magnificent panel of around 50 high-level speakers, we are nearly ready to open the doors to our new two-day format, providing the most action-packed experience in this, our fifth Ceramics Expo (that went fast!).
This has established itself as the materials, manufacturing and components show, still totally free to attend, and the ultimate comprehensive supply chain event that speaks both to, and of, technical ceramics, glass-ceramics, glass, composites and associated materials.
With all strands of the industry extensively represented, we will reflect the fantastic successes being achieved, both technologically and commercially. As each report reaches our office, it is clear that the future is extremely bright, and your own presence at Ceramics Expo will enhance the event for everyone.
We are by no means alone in our positivity. Just a few weeks ago, Goldman Sachs Research concluded that the special characteristics of silicon carbide – just one of many technical ceramics on display – means it could slash the cost of manufacturing and maintaining EVs by up to $2,000, halve the cost of installing solar inverters, advance the production of highly cost-efficient semiconductors, and increasingly become critical in batteries, tech, auto and factory automation. Result: the research team estimates that the market for silicon carbide alone could hit $5bn by 2030.
If you then consider how all our other technical ceramic and glass materials are making themselves absolutely invaluable in so many industries – space/aerospace, medical, automotive, electronics, energy, heat treatment, defense, telecommunications, oil and gas, and construction – it’s plain to see how as a group they have become, technologically, the great enablers.
I would be delighted if you could spend these two days in Cleveland to dig deeply into everything this industry has to offer.

NEW FORMATCeramics Expo will feature a new format – comprising two longer days for the exhibition and conference rather than three shorter ones. This means less time out of office and fewer accommodation costs, plus more face time with key buyers in a shorter period.
The exhibition and conference will take place from Tuesday April 30 to Wednesday May 1, 2019, with a welcome reception and networking event for exhibitors and invited guests on Monday April 29.

CAPTURING EVERY ANGLEKeyence’s VR-5000 is a non-contact optical profiler designed to provide form, contour and roughness measurements over a 4 x 8in (10 x 20cm) area with submicron resolution. Unlike traditional contact-based 3D measurement systems, which capture point or line data, the VR-5000 is able to capture the full surface data. Built-in AI smart measurement automates the data acquisition process. Users simply place their samples on the stage and click a single button. The system automatically determines the boundaries of the part and the optimum settings, and begins measuring the surface. Even inexperienced users can quickly and easily obtain accurate and repeatable data. The post-processing analysis software provides advanced measurement capabilities, making it easier to tie measurements to decision making. Batch processing promotes measurement across many parts, saving time and increasing repeatability. CAD comparison can be used to overlay measurement data with CAD files, helping to verify product design and to understand how a manufactured part will perform compared to the design.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE THERMOCOUPLE WIREJohnson Matthey has developed HTX high-strength platinum thermocouple wire that withstands the most demanding applications, from glass furnaces and nuclear reactors to jet engines and semiconductor applications. The company stabilizes the grain boundaries in HTX wire to give it outstanding strength compared with JM’s standard platinum wire. This stabilization prevents grains occupying the complete wire diameter to stop bamboo structures developing from the grains being easily displaced. Containing the grains allows extremely high temperatures to be measured over long periods of time. HTX wire provides superior durability. It maintains excellent functionality after 1,200 hours at 1,400°C (2,550°F) with 400psi tensile loading during accelerated life testing, while showing exceptional measurement accuracy, meeting IEC 60584-1 class 1 tolerance. Long-term performance (over 1,000 hours) is currently being assessed at the National Physical Laboratory. HTX wire is available as type R
and type S thermocouples, and JM can manufacture it in any diameter within the company’s typical size range.

AS-C ALUMINA: PREMIUM PERFORMANCE ON A BUDGETShowa Denko, one of Japan’s leading chemical companies, has continued to innovate in the field of technical ceramics, providing a wide variety of alumina, boron nitride and abrasive grains. At this year’s show, the company will introduce its newest addition to the Showa Denko product family – a new type of roundish alumina known as AS-C. This material is a low-cost alternative to the firm’s AS grade of high-purity roundish alumina. Due to it’s unique particle geometry, AS-C alumina offers improved thermal conductivity and filling density. AS-C offers all of the potential mentioned above,
but at a fraction of the cost; perfect for those applications where price is key.

HIGH-TEMP NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING KITBuzzMac International will introduce its new high-temperature non-destructive testing kit for measuring Young’s modulus, and version 6 of its Buzz-o-sonic software. The high-temperature kit can be attached to any existing furnace and requires only one hole to be bored through the bottom. A high-quality furnace (CM Furnaces) can be supplied with the kit pre-installed. Version 6 of the Buzz-o-sonic software represents a major step forward in state-of-the-art impulse excitation (ping) testing. Calculation of Young’s modulus, shear modulus, Poisson’s ratio and internal friction (Q 1) can be performed, and the raw data (vibration waveform, power spectrum, etc.) can be stored and retrieved from the built-in sample database. This data is also stored for high-temperature testing for each test point. A built-in spreadsheet-like table allows easy input of the physical properties (mean value can be calculated), and a polynomial fit to the linear expansion coefficient can be performed for precise high-temperature analysis.

ALUMINA RIBBON CERAMICCorning has invented a new way to manufacture high-quality, fully dense alumina ceramic ribbon in roll-to-roll format, which is a revolution in the processing of ceramic materials. This new manufacturing process enables the company to make high-performance alumina wafers and panels for electronic substrates and packaging, among other applications. Alumina Ribbon Ceramic can be made thinner than a piece of paper, and can conform to smooth, curved surfaces. Its flexibility enables it to bend, but not break, during exposure to high-temperature gradients. Therefore, it can undergo rapid thermal shock and be run through high-temperature processes at fast speeds without mechanical failure. Additionally, due to its high thermal conductivity and thinness,
Alumina Ribbon Ceramic has a low thermal resistance and dissipates heat from actives in a similar way to aluminum nitride.

DEMO SET FOR TRANSFLOW FLUIDIZATIONAt Ceramics Expo 2019, Young Industries will demonstrate how its Transflow powder fluidization actually works. The Transflow media evenly distributes low pressure-low volume compressed gas through the finest powder, changing the flow characteristics so that even the most difficult powders will flow freely. Transflow technology can be used in hoppers, cones, downspouts or transitions. The 316S/S Transflow media can be formed to almost any shape to solve powder flow problems where they start. Transflow cones, tubes and pads will be shown
in the Young Industries booth. Also on display will be the patented PowderFlow butterfly valve specifically designed to be used with fine powders with poor flow characteristics.

Described as fast, quiet and portable, the HK Quik Siv is an effective tool to ensure greater consistency and faster throughput for lab powder batches. Powered by Cleveland Vibrator’s high-speed, stainless-steel Turbomite Model CVT-S-10, this pneumatic vibrator produces over 20,000 vibrations per minute while using only 1.4cfm, making it a highly affordable option compared with other traditional hand-sieving options. This handheld, easy-to-use sieve comes equipped with a quick clamping system that can adjust to most existing test sieves; there’s also a button-activated air valve. OPTIMIZE CERAMIC POWDER PROCESSING APPLICATIONSAlthough ceramic processors have a wide selection of powder characterization techniques from which to choose, the applications within the industry exert specific demands. Characterizing powder properties effectively can both accelerate and optimize the development cycle. Freeman Technology’s solutions include the FT4 Powder Rheometer, a comprehensive powder flow tester that combines unique dynamic methodologies, automated shear cells (in accordance with ASTM D7891) and a series of bulk property tests to quantify powder behavior in terms of flow and processability. Dynamic measurements of a powder in motion not only quantify flowability but also permit the investigation of the impact of air. Samples can be analyzed in consolidated, conditioned, aerated or even fluidized states. The FT4 is complemented by the Uniaxial Powder Tester (UPT), which provides an accurate and repeatable measure of the uniaxial Unconfined Yield Strength (uUYS) of a powder to assess and rank flowability.

GFW/GTF POWER CONTROLLERSGefran’s GFW and GTF lines are compact, advanced SCR power controllers available in 1PH-2PH-3PH configurations. They are ideal for controlling specialty resistive loads with low and high thermal coefficients, IR lamps and transformers. The controllers are available in current levels from 25A to 600A, 480V AC and 600V AC, and come IIoT-ready – meaning that they are fully communications, advanced diagnostics and preventive maintenance capable. The GTF controllers have embedded PID capability (optional for GFW). Also featured are configurable firing modes, zero crossing, burst firing, half single cycle and phase angle. The controllers are designed with configurable analog input for Volt, mA and potentiometer sensor input (digital in PWM), and have a patented internal resettable electronic fuse (optional). There is also total and partial load interrupt alarm. These lines dialog with
the most popular protocols, such as Fieldbus (optional): Modbus RTU (GTF only), Profibus DP, CanOpen, Modbus-TCP, Ethernet IP and EtherCAT. These Gefran units are 100Ka SCCR rated.

RESONANT FREQUENCY AND DAMPING ANALYSISIMCE will present its innovative non-destructive materials characterization measurement devices. The Resonant Frequency and Damping Analyzer (RFDA) brings mechanical spectroscopy based on the impulse excitation technique (IET) to the next level. When it comes to developing new ceramic materials, you must have fundamental understanding of ceramic material behaviors in order to predict how the new material may perform. It is also important to know how to optimize existing materials and processes to fit any new demands. The RFDA-HT measurement systems offer continuous measurement from room temperature up to 1,700°C (3,100°F) during the heating and cooling of the sample. The obtained elastic and damping properties as function of temperature are valuable input parameters for FEM analysis, and also provide important information about the microstructural behavior of the material.
The RFDA system has limited restrictions on sample geometry and dimensions and is applicable to porous and brittle materials, making it a versatile piece of basic laboratory test equipment.

PULSE SHOCK CALCINATION FOR CHALLENGING APPLICATIONSIBU-tec is launching a new pulsation reactor specifically designed to allow users to explore and exploit the possibilities offered by thermal shock treatment. The pulse reactor platform is literal rocket science, derived directly from pulsejet rocket technology. A precursor is sprayed into a pulsating hot gas stream, where flash calcination occurs, resulting in amorphous structures and a narrow property distribution. Altering reactor conditions or raw materials can result in distinct product properties. The process can be especially suitable for challenging end product applications such as those in nanomaterials, 3D printing and technical ceramics. The new pilot reactor will provide a cost-effective option for trials, developing submicron powders and coated particles custom tailored to specific requirement profiles. IBU-tec supports endeavors covering a wide range of materials. These include zinc oxide, zirconia, iron oxide, magnesia, spinels and many others.

UNIFORM BLENDING FOR DIFFICULT MATERIALSThe Kakuhunter centrifugal planetary mixer from Glen Mills is designed for uniform blending of difficult viscous liquids and pastes. Furthermore, rapid mixing of powders into the liquid/paste is achieved due to intense motions at over 2,000rpm. When there are entrained gases, the Kakuhunter can expel the bubbles by the motion alone or enhanced with a vacuum option. Chillers help protect from heat damage. The planetary action gives rise to strong forces that accelerate mixing/blending/degassing. The speed of each motion can be independently controlled. The design allows for batch integrity, rapid changeover between runs, and no cross-contamination between runs. The line starts with a 400ml single container unit
and climbs to models holding two containers of 2,000ml, each loaded with up to 3kg of materials for a 6kg total. The Kakuhunter is available for rental to test at customers’ sites, and some trials can be run at Glen Mills in New Jersey.

HIGH-PRECISION MACHINING FOR ULTRA-HARD MATERIALSJapanese exhibitor Top Seiko will feature its CNC machining service for exotic ultra-hard materials such as engineering ceramics, quartz/sapphire glasses and refractory metals. Typically, the company machines components in these materials to customer order. At Ceramics Expo 2019, it will be showcasing some samples to demonstrate its capabilities. The Quartz Colosseum is a prime example, showing Top Seiko’s sophisticated programming and high-precision machining skill. Working over a four-day period, the company machined a 190 x 190 x 105mm (7.5 x 7.5 x 4.1in) quartz block into an elaborate shape with no damages or cracks. INNOVATIVE CERAMICS FOR COMPLEX PROCESSESAs processes evolve and new material requirements emerge, it is necessary for furnaces to operate at higher temperatures, in unique atmospheres, and in extreme cycling, often exceeding the capability of traditional refractory linings. What are you most looking forward to about attending Ceramics Expo 2019? What sessions have captured your attention?
Ceramics Expo 2019 is an excellent opportunity for me to meet new people interested in ceramic technology, and appreciate how innovations are progressing. I am looking forward to the interactive panel discussion on April 30 to learn about the fastest growth areas and future opportunities for advanced ceramics. I am also participating in the session examining advances in additive manufacturing techniques and materials, and I am eager to hear the activities and views of my fellow speakers, and to share our knowledge in this fast-growing area.
What do you see as the most prominent trend currently affecting the ceramics industry?
Competitive and sustainable manufacturing coupled with new uses for ceramic components continue to be strong drivers of innovation within the ceramics industry. Processes that make manufacturing more efficient, enhance materials properties,
accelerate the product development cycle or reduce energy consumption are all attractive to industry. We have seen advances in sintering technology such as Flash, which offers both the potential of lower energy consumption and the ability to produce materials with new properties, such as toughened ceramics; and additive manufacturing, which is opening digital manufacturing approaches. The next big challenge is to make this ready for wide application, and this is something that we at Lucideon are focusing on.
Please elaborate on some of Lucideon’s core focuses in the near future.
As a materials and process consultancy, our focus is always on helping our clients to optimize their current processing technologies or implement news ones swiftly and effectively, to improve yields, optimize performance and reduce costs. Producing high-quality components that are right first time is the goal for every manufacturer, and that’s where we can help. Key for us is developing proprietary technologies in-house, such as Flash Sintering, which we can then share with our customers, and identifying and overcoming the challenges that come as new technologies, such as ceramic additive manufacturing, are introduced to market.
In this speaker interview we caught up with Stuart MacLachlan, Head of R&D at Lucideon. This year at Ceramics Expo, Stuart will be taking part in the panel discussion titled Designing Specifically for Additive Manufacturing. His wealth of knowledge and experience in additive manufacturing promises to make a valuable contribution to the conference.
After completing his MSc on the oxidation of austenitic stainless steel, Stuart became a product development engineer for Chloride Silent Power. He then went on to gain an MBA and moved toward developing and managing collaborative research and development projects. It was this that led him to joining Lucideon, where he has risen through the ranks and continued to oversee a variety of projects. His involvement in additive manufacturing began in the early 2000s and has been one of his key focuses for almost 20 years.
Please tell us about your role as R&D Manager at Lucideon. What are your key responsibilities and focus areas?
As Head of R&D at Lucideon, I focus on advancing new processes and ceramic systems. Based on Lucideon’s strength and track record in applied research, process scale-up and consultancy, much of my job involves working with companies and researchers to deliver joint projects. My day-to-day activities involve developing collaborative R&D proposals often with support from public funders, managing live projects and advancing exploitation of project results.
I also play an active part in Lucideon’s Innovation Team, planning the future direction of our internal research and technical capabilities so that we can meet challenges in emerging areas for ceramics such as additive manufacturing, ceramic matrix composites, thermal barrier coatings and regenerative medicine.
Can you explain to us the most exciting and challenging aspects of your job?Understanding the practical and business implications of these processing and technology innovations is key to developing robust proposals. Working with a wide range of industries – from ceramic manufacturers and suppliers to companies operating in areas such as energy storage, aerospace, healthcare and aerospace – brings a stimulating variety of technical and project management challenges. There is nothing more satisfying than taking a project
