I TIMOTHY 2:5

Do You Know My Jesus?

The Mediator

This morning we want to focus in on Jesus as the Mediator

When we think of the idea of Christ the Mediator, we often think in terms of prayer

That’s the context in which I Timothy 2:5 is written

Page 4: I Timothy 2:5 (NKJV) 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

The Mediator

First we might ask what exactly a mediator is

The dictionary defines it as one who intervenes between two persons who are at variance, with a view to reconcile them; one who acts as a medium of communication between two contracting parties

Page 5: I Timothy 2:5 (NKJV) 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

The Mediator

Strongs defines it as a go-between; one who intervenes between two, either in order to make or restore peace and friendship, or form a compact, or for ratifying a covenant

We often think of Jesus as that go-between when we pray

Page 6: I Timothy 2:5 (NKJV) 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

The Mediator

The truth is that Jesus has been a Mediator in many different ways

It was through His sacrifice on the cross that we have been reconciled back to God (Rom. 5:6-11)

However, I want us to think about what Jesus says of Himself in this respect….

The Mediator

1. Jesus Words

John 1:43-51

Philip brings Nathanael to Christ

Jesus indicates that He knows who Nathanael is

Christ goes on to prove who He is to Nathanael by telling Nathanael that He saw him under the fig tree

Page 8: I Timothy 2:5 (NKJV) 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

The Mediator

1. Jesus Words

Nathanael was amazed and immediately confesses his faith in the Christ

Jesus then affirms that seeing Nathanael under the fig tree was just the tip of the iceberg

He then reveals this in verse 51…

The Mediator

1. Jesus Words

What exactly did Jesus mean by this?

What was He revealing to us about Himself with these words?

These words that are spoken here by Jesus sound very familiar to an Old Testament passage found in Genesis…

2. Jacob’s Ladder

Genesis 28:10-19

Jacob was on his way to Laban’s when he stopped off for the night

He dreams of a ladder that went from the earth all the way up into heaven

The angels of God were going up and down

2. Jacob’s Ladder

Jacob called that place Bethel (House of God)

What we read in this passage bears resemblance to what Jesus spoke of in John 1

What does this parallel tell us?

Page 13: I Timothy 2:5 (NKJV) 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

The Mediator

3. Jesus The Mediator

Christ told Nathanael that he would see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man

In other words, Christ would be that ladder that Jacob saw back in Genesis 28

Page 14: I Timothy 2:5 (NKJV) 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

The Mediator

3. Jesus The Mediator

What this means is that Jesus is that ladder that connects God to man

He would bridge the gap between the two

Isn’t that what a mediator does?

Jesus is telling us early in the Gospels here what He has come to do

3. Jesus The Mediator

Paul reminds us in II Corinthians 5:17-19 what Christ did in reconciling us to God

He is the Mediator in the aspect of prayer, but He is also Mediator in so many more ways

Jesus reveals this to us by looking back at a type of Himself
