Adjectives are words that add to (or describe) a noun

If the police were seeking a criminal they would ask witnesses for a description to narrow down their search.

If they are told that he was a short man they need not consider any tall men. Again, if they know that he was stocky they can rule out all tall, thin men.

As we add words to describe the wanted man the field of search becomes smaller.

He had brown hair and a very long

nose. He was short, but

quite stocky.

A word which describes a noun is called an adjective.

The man fell into the sea.

The man fell into the raging sea.

The adjective ‘raging’ adds description to the sentence. Describing words can bring the story to life….. they tell you what the mood of a scene was like.

The weary sun tried unsuccessfully to add some brightness to the dreary atmosphere. A skinny cat sitting on a fence woke up with an enormous stretch.

A father with his son tried to cross the frantically, busy road to get to the warm, bright cafe on the other side.
