Creating the raw materials roadmap towards 2030 and 2050
i-SUP2016 | VERAM Raw Materials Vision and Roadmap 2050 workshop
Antwerp, 19 October 2016
Introduction
• Why does Europe need a Raw Material 2050 R&D Roadmap?
• Examples of the commitments by EU to 2050
• Classification of raw materials sectors and research areas
• Structuring the R&D roadmap
• Gathering what we know - the VERAM portal
• Stakeholder consultation on the vision
• Next steps in the process and discussions
Why does Europe need a RM 2050 R&D Roadmap?
Strengthen the interface between industry, researchers and policymakers in setting R&I priorities
Mobilise a critical mass of R&I funding capacity
Support exploitation and dissemination of results
Reduce fragmentation through an increased cooperation
Final objective to deliver a medium and long-term Vision and strategic Research Roadmap 2050 for European Raw Materials
Examples of the commitments by EU 2050
EU policy framework
A competitive low-carbon economy 2050: 80 % cut in CO2 by 2050 (1990 levels)
The Paris Agreement: limit the increase in global average temerature to 1.5 C
Circular Economy Package
UN Sustainable development goals
EIP on Raw Materials contributing to the EU 2020 objectives:
EU’s Industrial Policy - increasing the share of industry to 20% of GDP
The flagship initiatives ‘Innovation Union’ and ‘Resource Efficient Europe, by ensuring the
sustainable supply of raw materials to the European economy whilst increasing benefits
for society as a whole.
Two raw material value-chains
Raw materials
Biotic
Non-biotic
Categorisation of raw material sectors and research areas
A. Technologies for primary and secondary RM production
• A1. Innovative extraction and harvesting of raw materials
• A2. Resource efficient processing and refining of raw materials
• A3. Recycling or raw materials from products, buildings and infrastructure
B. Advanced use and substitution of raw materials
• B4. Materials for use in large quantities, including energy technologies
• B5. Materials for consumer products and advanced applications
• B6. Product design optimising use of raw materials and increasing quality recycling
C. Improving logistics and Europe’s waste management framework
• C7. Optimised waste flows for increased recycling
• C8. Logistics, transport and optimised raw material flows along the value chain
Eight research areas

VERAM research and Innovation Portal
• A dedicated web-based research and innovation portal for raw materials related research activities launched in May 2016 (FTP task leader) providing tools for:
mutual information exchange and transfer of knowledge
identifying the gaps in RM related research activities

Stakeholder Consultation – Expected achievements by 2030 Expected achievements by 2050
• The objective of the consultation was to identify some of the key challenges and opportunties for the RM sector in the upcoming decades by inspiring RM stakeholder groups to share their knowledge helping outline and develop the roadmap.
• Target group: non-biotic and biotic sectors
Four open questions on the future: Q1. Envisioned futures: How do you envision your sector/value chain/professional position in the future? What are the phenomena that will bring the biggest change? Q2. Achieving the future reality: What are needed to achieve this vision? Q3. Innovation pathways: What kind of technological and scientific breakthrouhgs are required? Q4. Risks: Wha are the associated risks that could hinder the vision?

ACHIEVING MY FUTURE REALITY
Q2. What could you do to achieve this vision and how would you describe your role in achieving it?
2030 2050 To support routes towards a slower urbanisation To put a strong focus on resource efficiency To develop cheap sensors and communication
networks (IoT) To increase the knowledge base for precision
forestry, improve all kind of technology for inventory and planning, etc.
To produce efficient logging machines with autonomous control and processing systems. To develop precision tools based on measurements and models for predicting wood material properties of relevance for different use.
To improve tree breeding for increasing wood supply
To promote the research interests of the sector; to perform multidisciplinary research
To increase expertise in timber building and wood-based solutions
To research advanced and bio-based materials To research smart components in materials and
systems of renewable materials To research on adaptable envelopes with renewable
materials To research new materials from trees (e.g. via think
tanks) and self-healing materials (new approaches To coordinate the various stakeholders keeping the
high-level [research] agenda To develop research and innovation programs to
stimulate advanced uses of hardwoods. To establish a European tree breeding centre
