The workshop focused on team building, trust, engaging critically with frameworks, facilitation and communication. Journeying beyond one’s comfort zone and pushing personal boundaries was very much a part of the journey and the team courageously launched themselves into all the activities. The three days offered activities that were entirely new to everyone, such as surfing, as well as activities where some participants had existing experience and could take lead roles, such as project design activities. “This has changed me, I have grown so much, its beyond expectation and I realise I am very fortunate to be on the CD2030 team” (Walusungu Ngulube, SADC rep on the team) “Succeeding with the impossible, like I never imagined I could or would ever surf, makes me confident that we can do something very great as a team for CD2030” (Nomfusi Msizi) “My mind is buzzing with possibilities, a hundred different ideas, how are we going to link and have the conversation with the other teams about this, I am looking forwards at what could be outcomes” (Grant Bellairs) During the workshop, the 20-person virtual meeting with youth partner teams in Benin and Germany where they met each other for the first time took place. The schedule of activities over the next 9 months will utilize the virtual space for meetings and trainings on a monthly basis and this journey is exploratory and new for all us which is really exciting. Countdown 2030 The global learning project aims to combine the experiences and knowledge of both German and South African volunteers in transforming two local school libraries into places of global learning whereby the children and youth of Walmer Township in PE have access to information and learning activities. Both venues will function as physical and virtual creative hubs for the exchange and communication of weltwärts volunteers as well as Alumni in South Africa and Germany. The project provides exposure of children and youth to intercultural exchange, communication and cultural learning while a lack of global learning amongst youth as well as a lack of network opportunities for volunteers and Alumni are tackled. In the journey of transforming the school libraries, the foundation and project plan for the upcoming activities was laid in a 2-day planning workshop. The team members have decided to dedicate roles amongst them for the duration of the project. On a bi-weekly basis, the whole team comes together to update and meet on the current status and progress of the project plan. Fun introduction events took place in both libraries, where the topic and concept of global learning was introduced to the learners. At Walmer Primary school, the audience experienced a cultural storytelling, in which they imaginary travelled through places and heard about different people, nature, food and other things. At Walmer High School, the global learning team sparked the learner’s interest for the upcoming project with a global quiz competition. They simultaneously worked on a landscape picture puzzle and a global crossword puzzle, followed by a 30 seconds global learning game.
The following weeks were used to set up global learning corners/hubs with informational material in both school libraries. Books and magazines about global learning related topics are displayed and learners can access the material at any time. Laptops provide access to research via the internet, receive information about what is happening in the world and around them, not only for the learners but also for volunteers and Alumni.
