“In Partnership”

"I believe the service of churches in our public schools will be what saves them both," says Jackie Flaum, “Team Read” head coach at the Germantown United Methodist Church, Memphis, Tennessee.

The Germantown United Methodist Church's Social Action Work Area developed “Team Read” in partnership with education professionals at Caldwell-Guthrie Elementary School, half an hour away in north Memphis. Through the program, volunteers teach 1,000 foundational words to second-graders while maintaining their own flexible schedules.

The community of faith at Germantown United Methodist Church in Memphis, Tennessee has discovered that building a partnership with the school district is changing lives.

God is in partnership with humans to transform lives. We can be instruments of change.

During the next 31 days, or so, consider how you too, can be in partnership with another person (or more) that leads to transformation of them and you. You may find that God will use you to transform a life.

All the best,

Jerre

From my heart to yours

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is

given; and the government shall be upon

his shoulder: and his name shall be called

Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace

Isaiah 9:6 (ASV)

December is of great relevance for many

people, especially for the Christian sector; with a

very festive spirit; although… it's worth noting,

often it goes the wrong way.

I'll share a couple of questions; meditate on

them now right at the beginning of the month,

and so avoid going in the wrong direction.

What is the true celebration of this time? To

whom is addressed my celebration? Am I

celebrating Jesus with what I do, say, buy and

prepared?

'Santa Claus'... etc.; are only impersonations;

It is not the true meaning of Christmas; and you

and I, we know this. Why then continue to

deceive our children with these unreal

characters? The prince of this world (Satan) will

always try to overshadow, replace the Person of

Jesus, and divert all attention to sacred things.

I urge you to do a campaign this month to put

on high the name of Jesus; in our homes and

lives; and the wonderful and supernatural birth

of the most important Person throughout the

history of mankind it takes boom; let's share, to

be born, and sprout in the hearts of many.

I invite you do not miss any of these special

events in our church, in celebration of the birth

of Jesus, and invites many to join them:

In the love of Christ,

Pastor Tania

dado, y el principado sobre su hombro;

y se llamará su nombre Admirable,

Consejero, Dios Fuerte, Padre Eterno,

Príncipe de Paz – Is.9:6

digo, compro y preparo?

‘Santa Claus’… etc.; son solo suplantaciones;

mes para poner muy en alto el Nombre de Jesús;

historia de la humanidad cobre auge;

8:55am – Santuario.

11:00am – Santuario – Culto unido (Casa de

oración y Grupo contemporáneo).

Have you felt, like you can’t wait

and finally have their very own

Bible in their hands. That’s the

Student MinistriesA Note From Bryce

"A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse and a branch

shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on

him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of

counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the

Lord."- Isaiah 11:1-2

As we prepare for Christmas we celebrate the season of

Advent. It is a season of waiting; a season of preparation for

what is about to come. Yet, we know that it is Jesus Christ that

is coming, and we know when we will celebrate his birth.

The characters throughout the Old Testament spent much

time waiting for an undisclosed time. They waited through

characters like Abraham and David - characters that we know

well. These characters are also strung together through a

genealogical line in which the promised Messiah will come.

But there are lesser known characters in this line as well.

Characters like Rahab and Leah who were important in the

history of Israel, as well as important pieces in Christ's

genealogy. As our youth prepare for Christmas, we will learn

about the characters in Christ's ancestry that have been forgotten

over time.

As you prepare for the coming of Christ, take some time to

look through Christ's ancestors. Find some characters that you

don't know, and use their stories to understand our need, and

hopeful expectation for the coming of Christ.

Weekly Programs

Sunday School: Our Sunday School program meets Sunday mornings from 10-11 in the RZ Room. We are working on "Synago" - from the greek meaning, "Come Together." Throughout this study we will discover how in working as a group, we draw closer to each other and to God.

RZ (Reality Zone): Our youth ministry offers youth an opportunity to discover what it means to be in a real, authentic relationship with the God who created, redeems, and sustains all things. This year we are studying "The B-Team" in which we learn about Biblical characters who have been lost to time. Middle school meets from 4:15-7:30, while high school meets from 5:30-8:15.

What to Know: This congregation is incredibly

generous to our youth. We never have to do fundraisers and we still don't have to worry about

how we fund our youth ministry. Because of this generosity, we are

able to take ski retreats, go on workcamps, and have a number of great activities throughout the

year. As our way of saying, "Thank

you!", we will host a FREE dinner on December 2 from 5:30-6:30pm.

The menu will include a nacho bar, salad, and dessert. Join us for this wonderful time of fellowship and know that we appreciate all that you do for youth ministries.

SARAH SAYS Light in the Darkness

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness doesn't

extinguish the light." John 1:5

We Still Need Jesus Listen to the news, listen to your friends, look also at your life at times- we don't have to look far to remember that the world Jesus entered was not unlike ours. In fact, the first Christmas took place at a time when innocent children were being killed. The first Christmas took place in a time like ours when evil men did evil things. We can't forget that Jesus came into a world in desperate need not only of a beautiful scene but also of a savior, Jesus was sent to reconcile broken hearts and broken people in a broken world. Advent is a the season of light, but it can be a time of darkness for those of us who are hurting. If you are experiencing a dark night, hold onto the promise that Love will meet you where you are, penetrating the darkness with the Light of Christ. And if you are one who is basking in the Light and joyful wonder of the season, remember to be a Light- bearer to those who may be struggling. God, be with me from dawn to dusk to dawn again. By your Light, help me to navigate through the pain and suffering of life without being overcome. Help me to be a Light- bearer to those who need someone to guide them through their own dark nights. Amen. ( Excerpts taken from " Sent delivering the Gift of Hope At Christmas" Devotions for the Season .)

Do you like to tell stories? Would you help us tell the most important stories of all- the core Bible stories to the children in First Gifts? 11:00 Sunday mornings? We'd like to have a team of 5-6 so no one would have to have more than one Sunday a month. There are scripts to follow and props to help tell the stories in kid-friendly ways. They keep the sacred feel of the Bible stories in time tested ways that children remember. Partner with us in this important Bible learning for our church children so the next generation knows their Bible stories! UMW READING PROGRAM

The Latehomecomer By Kao Kalia Yang

Having been a young adult at the time of the Vietnam war, I had heard of the Hmong but knew little about them. Several years ago my nephew got married and a group of Hmong provided the wedding reception at the Hmong farm outside Des Moines. They served traditional food and explained some of the customs of a Hmong wedding. My nephew’s father-in-law had worked with the refugees there. He helped them with their family farm and set up the Hmong Lao Foundation to support the family social bond of the refugees and to pass on the culture’s traditions to their children. The goal was in part to keep the children out of gangs, which was a success. The wedding reception was a thank you to him for his commitment to them. The Latehomecomer describes the lives of the Hmong in Laos after the Americans left Vietnam. It tells how they traveled to Thailand and about life in a refugee camp before coming to the U.S. I found it to be a fascinating book, beautifully written by Kalia, a daughter born in the camp in Thailand. She says, “My mother only had two girls….She felt it was her duty to keep us very clean, even if we lived in a refugee camp where many children were dirty. She washed Daub [older sister] and me two times a day.” Kalia would drag her little aluminum tub by a string to the well where her father would draw

water. She was three years old. “I would just sit in the bathtub and let the water take away the heat of the day, slapping the surface of the water with my hands.” This is a must-read for anyone interested in learning about another culture. Peg Abbey Nurturing for Community (2011)

The Longest Night Service

Sunday, December 20, 2015

4:30 p.m.

The holidays can be a sad time for those

who experienced loss. Loss comes to us in

many forms. Loss of job. Loss of a family

member or friend due to death. Loss of

relationship. The Longest Night Service on

Sunday, December 20, 2015 at 4:30 p.m. is a

pre-Christmas service for those needing a

Light in the darkness. If you're feeling no

joy, Longest Night or Blue Christmas

services can provide comfort. Participants

will not hear triumphant organ fanfares, nor

will they sing joyous Christmas carols, only

quiet readings and prayers in a sanctuary lit

with votives amid the dusk of late afternoon.
