Exams MADE Easy - Powerful revision and exam preparation strategies held on 25th and 26th October in our October half term. The workshop was helpful for our pupils to learn how to:

1. Motivate themselves to revise 2. Analyse their performance and prioritise their efforts 3. Condense information and create cue cards/flash cards 4. Use mnemonic and spatial memory techniques 5. Use spaced learning strategies to beat procrastination, increase

productivity and enable knowledge mastery The workshops were an incredible success! “Really positive to see so many pupils come in of their own accord and vibrantly engage in accelerating their studying performance’. “It will help with revision tips and how you can do it better” “We have learnt a range of techniques and strategies” Feelings: Happy, confidence growing, power boaster, feel more energised and determined! Helps you with a positive mind set before our exams – thank you we appreciated it. A huge thank you to Study Higher for funding for this event. Caireen Young Lead Professional in student Progress

Better Lives – Photographic competition

Introducing the "Better Lives" young people's photographic competition from the Economic and Social Research Council. They would like to challenge young people aged 14-18 to take a photo which shows what Better Lives means to them. What brings quality to lives in this day and age? Is it better education, health, and wellbeing, relationships or money or is this a safer, sustainable environment? For more information, please speak to Ms Young.

Lawn Manor Sports News

This week has seen the start of the Inter House Basketball and Netball competitions. The opening rounds take place in the core PE lessons and the finals take place at lunchtime. Already champions for Year 8 Basketball are Goddard 8E! The rest of the finals will be decided next week.

Employment Pathway

This week in the Employment Pathway we started to learn orienteering. This is where you use a compass to find directions and to follow bearings. After learning how to work the compass we were tested on a short course and then on a big course. We had to follow bearings and clues looking for features around the lakes. The weather was horrible to start with and we had to take shelter until the sun came out.

Pupil Achievements

The Salamander Project was fun and there was a lot of team work involved. What we did in 5 day’s firefighters have to learn it over 6 weeks. Here are just a few things that I took part in during the week: We had to go in the smoke house to rescue casualties (fake casualties) after we used the hose for the first time in practice for the last day. We had to work as a team to pitch a ladder then climb it then pitched it down again. We were blindfolded and guided by a whistle as we had to go between cones that was set in a circuit. We had to get into dry suits then we got in the fire engine to go to Coate Water, we had to do drills about saving someone that fell in and what to do if we fell in ourselves, after we swam across the lake then back again. After that we went in the tunnels in the smoke house. “I had so much fun and it was good to experience it and learn more about what it was like for a fire fighter, I felt every day was fun and a new experience. I found the ab-sailing was the scariest but I conquered it and enjoyed it. I hope with this information and hard work in school I can be a fire fighter in the future.” – Dylan Brown Year 11 - 2018

Lawn Manor Library News

'All welcome at Lawn Manor Academy's own Zombie Hospital Library', well that was what the pupils were told by Library Officer Rachel Reynolds. Rachel said, ‘each month I create a new theme in the Library to entice the pupils in and make reading more exciting. We have had themes like Harry Potter, Murder Mystery, Disney, Book to Movie, to name but a few but of course in October has to be HORROR!’ The Library was decorated from top to bottom by Rachel and her pupil helpers to create a creepy, scary zombie hospital, borrowing props from the Science and Drama faculties. The students all look forward to seeing what is coming next and Horror is a favourite, ready for Halloween. Rachel said ‘This year I wanted to go one step further and dress up and get into character to surprise the students on the last day of term, so I asked for a little help’.

Last July to end our summer term, pupils were lucky enough to enjoy Enrichment week, this is a week of trips,

activities and skills for pupils to learn and take part in. Make-up Artist/Lecturer Gemma Mulrooney from New College visited Lawn Manor and spent the day showing our pupils how to apply horror make up and special effects- this was really a hit. To continue our relationship with New college, I asked Gemma if one of her pupils would be willing to make me into a zombie for the day, so Alicia Griffin, a talented 3rd year student of Media makeup, who will finish her course in 2020 and plans to go into special effects or wig making, came to Lawn Manor and completed my transformation. This was a real talking point in the Library, as a zombie surgeon checked out books for all the pupils at Lawn Manor for the day.
