IV. The Natural, Carnal and Spiritual Man.
V. Love: a NEW command v.34-35
VI. Conclusion
Jesus tried to reach Judas's Conscience at least 5 times. Notice that
Jesus spoke openly and plainly (He didn't use cryptic language)
John 13: 10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is
clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. 11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
John 13:13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
John 13:14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
John 13:18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. (A Quote from Psalm: 41:9)
John 13:21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
John 13:27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
The Disciples also had no
Clue!!! Mathew 13:22 “And they were exceeding sorrowful, and
began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?”
Mathew 13:25 “Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.” JESUS TOLD HIM!!
Jn 13:28 “Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. 29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.”
Jesus Knew His Own Scriptures of
Sadness and Judgment!!! Mt 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless
them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you
Mk 14:21 The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.
Psalm 41:9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted,
which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me
The Best chair in the house!!! V. 26
Judas sat in the honored place next to the lord!
Judas given the sop(a sign of respect and was a courtesy to give to the guest!!)
So Then, Why was Jesus Troubled? Christ’s has an Impeccable beautiful Heart!
He Genuinely and from the heart Loved His Betrayer Judas!!!
Jesus is the righteous judge and knows that His friend Judas would be facing eternal punishment.
Christ is full of Grace and Truth!!!
Think about this!! Judas was chosen as one of the disciples which lasted for the
entire 3 year duration of our Lord's public ministry.
Judas was given an important ministry with the Disciples as He handled the money.
There was never any question about Judas being one of the twelve!
Judas saw everything that Jesus did (miracles, teaching etc.)
Jesus washed Judas's feet just like He did the others
Judas sat in the place of honor. Right next to Jesus.
Jesus gave Judas a sign of friendship and honor by giving Him the Sop.
Judas was close to the Lord in proximity.
Judas had a quiet and meek spirit but Peter was loud and obnoxious.
What’s the lesson?
1Sam. 16:7b “for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for
man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD
looketh on the heart.”
Judas was close to the Lord only in proximity!!!!
Not true of Peter!!!
Don’t judge Outward appearances
Something else to ponder! Christ’s example of Reaching the Lost. This isn’t Church Doctrine
Build a relationship (takes time)
Get them involved by
giving them meaningful
work
Don’t judge a lost person. They already are!!! Judgment belongs to God alone.
Speak clearly as you use the Word of God as Jesus did with Judas.
Pray without ceasing
Satan entered Judas 1st Warefare starts in the mind
2nd Suppressing the truth leads to a heart issue!!!
John 13:2
“And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;”
John 13:27
“And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.”
3rd The body carries out the action!!
V.30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
Mark 6:52 “For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their
heart was hardened.” The Mind followed by the heart followed by the body. Suppressing the truth over time leads to a hardness of heart. Judas over time suppressed the truth and his heart was hard
which led to Satan entering into him. God didn’t make Judas betray Jesus…Judas came to this
decision on His own.
Anecdote: 1Cor. 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
Christ’s Glory V.31-Glory from Eternity Past right up to the Cross
Jn. 12:23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. Going to the cross)
V. 32-Glory from the cross to the Glory in Eternity.
Jn. 17:1 “These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
SCOFIELD SAYS THIS: The hour of human decision was past, as far as the
establishment of the kingdom was concerned. The King
had been rejected by His own nation, and therefore, the
predicted temporal blessings of that Kingdom for both Jews
and Gentiles had to be deferred until the King's return in
glory. But now a greater hour has arrived-the hour of the
King's glorification through death and resurrection; this hour,
set by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God,
will bring eternal life to all who believe, whether Jews or
gentiles.
Colossians 1:20-22 V.20-Christ’s Past Glory
V.21-Christ’s Present Glory
v.22-Christ’s Future Glory
20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
21 you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
22In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:
Christ’s Revelation & Everyone’s Question V.33 Christ’s Revelation: Little Children: Where I am
going you can not come….
Peter’s Question v. 36 Lord, where are you going
Thomas Question - Ch. 14:5 asks How do we know how to get there?
Phillip’s Question- Ch. 14:8 Would you show us the Father?
Judas (not Iscariot) Question: ch. 14:22 How will you show us the Father and not to those in the world?
Judas-The Natural Man 9)But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have
entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for
them that love him. (The unseen things of God are undiscoverable
by the Natural Man)
10But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit
searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. (God alone reveals
them by the Holy Spirit)
11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man
which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the
Spirit of God.12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but
the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely
given to us of God. (We who are Born Again have received the Holy
Spirit)
Judas-The Natural MAN 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's
wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing
spiritual things with spiritual. (The Holy Spirit reveals and
teaches us)
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of
God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know
them, because they are spiritually discerned. (The Natural Man
without the Holy Spirit can never discover the things of
God)
Peter-A Picture of The Carnal Man 1Corinthians 3:1 " And I, brethren, could not speak
unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal"?
Marks of a Carnal Christian!!!
Peter was led by His Emotions!!
Peter was self confident
John 13:8 "Thou shalt never wash
my feet”
John 13: 9 "Wash not my feet only,
but also my hands and my head"
John 13:37 "I will lay down my life
for thy sake"
Jesus is the Spiritual Man!!!
The Perfect Example!!
1Co 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
An Example of all Three in John 18 Notice V. 5 (THE NATURAL MAN)They answered him, Jesus of
Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.7 Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:9 That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.
Notice V. 10(The Carnal Man) Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
Notice V. 11(THE SPIRITUAL MAN) Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
Love a NEW COMMAND (Not an option)!! OLD “Mark 12:30 And thou
shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.”
New “Mt. 5: 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Quite New Command & In germ Form: Love amongst the Disciples is the key to outreach:
John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
John 17: 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
John 17: 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
This is WCF’s History!!! Started as a Bible Study.
Ended with food, a Bible Study, lots of singing and a great love for one another. A very close Bond. A Family!!!
There was never a time that the Bible study went out seeking to bring people in. There were no tent meetings, no tracks passed out and no outreaches planned by the group in any way.
Outreach was: Invite the people in…Many people showed up!!
The result of the Bible study led Mr. Torres( with an overflow of the spirit) to evangelize and westconners got saved and then started to come
and then more came and came and came some more CAME after that.
A BIG IF: If you love one another!!!
1John 4:12 "No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and His love is perfected in us”
....which overflows out to others!!!!
In Conclusion:
1st The Lord says The Key to outreach is inreach
2nd You are all His Little Children and He has much to say to you in this series.
