Last school year we started working to the CLIL project:"Art and English: a project that foresees the study of a topic of art in English applying the methodology of the "cooperative learning".

We took it again this year 2008-2009 studying Impressionism, Van Gogh, his works, his life and particularly the colours of water in impressionistic painters at the show at Mart’s museum.

We divided into groups, each group has studied a specific topic in a jigsaw activity. We searched for the information in English on internet.

Van Gogh's life and works have interested all of us, so we have decided to show the synthesis of the work made in a power point presentation and with a theatre performance called: "Van Gogh's Show”"

IMPRESSIONISMThe Impressionism was born in France- Paris- in 19th century. The characteristic of impressionism was an attempt to accurately record visual reality.

In 1874 the Impressionists held their first show. The Impressionists painted

not a landscape but the impression of a landscape. Nothing here is

painted exactly; the name Impressionism derives from Monet's painting: “

Impression Sunrise”.

IMPRESSIONISTIC

PAINTERSThe most Impressionist painters were: Monet, Renoir, Camille Pissarro,

Sisley, Morisot who worked together.

These artists became dissatisfied early in their careers with academic teachings

and emphasis on the painting an historical or mythological subject matter.

These artists abbandoned the

traditional landscape.

In their efforts to reproduce

immediate visual impressions

as registered on the retina,

They abandoned the use of

greys and blacks in shadows

and used complementary

colours instead.

CLAUDE MONET

Claude Monet was born on

14 November 1840

He first became known locally for

his charcoal caricatures, then he

learnt to use oil paints and the

"en plein air" (outdoor) techniques

for painting.

During the early 1880s Monet painted

several groups of landscapes and

seascapes in what he wanted to

represent the French countryside.

Paris: He moved in Paris with his brother Theo. In Paris improved his drawing technique. Here he became friend with Paul Gauguin,Henri Toulouse. Lautrec and Paul Signac.During this period in Paris, Van Gogh was influenced by Impressionism and Japanes prints. He met Pisarro, Cezanne and Saurat : Serat wanted to move away from broad brushstrokes of the Impresionist Artist developing the technique of pointillism : the use of dots or small strokes of contrasting colours to create subtle light changes.

Artist in Provence -Arles: (1886-1888)In this time he painted this famous work: the night skies, landscapes portraits and the interior and exterior of the house where he lived. Now it is surreal style called symbolism. Gauguin spends three mounths in Van Gogh house. When Gauguin left Van Gogh cut off his left ear lobe in a mad rage.

Saint Remy: He lived in asylium near Saint Remy. There he painted many works: the most famous is Starry Night.

Auvers-sur-Oise: At Dott. Gachet's house he painted the Portrait of Dott. Gachet, 1890, and it was sold in 1990. He shot himself on July.

“Starry night” was painted while Vincent was in the asylum at Saint-Rèmy.It was painted from memory and not outdoors as was Vincent's preference. The setting is dark but the moon ad the stars are bright. The sky was painted with brushstrokes and is represented with swirls and spirals. The colours he used are orange, yellow, green, purple and white. The lines are very thick. The shapes are curved.Van Gogh said, “it is good to love many things, for therein lies strength and what is done with love is well done.”

The Potato Eaters

The Potato Eaters is a painting by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh that he painted in April 1885 while in Nuenen, Netherlands. During March and the beginning of April 1885 he sketched studies for the painting and corresponded with his brother, who was not impressed with his current work or the sketches van Gogh sent him.He worked on the painting from April 13 until the beginning of May, when it was mostly done except for minor changes which he made with a small brush later the same year.

It is one of the last paintings by Van Gogh before his suicide. The ravens and paths are symbolic: the flight leaves no doubt that is a bad or a good omen, depending on how he 's observer, while the three pathsrepresent a state of confusion in the minds of 'artist. The strokes go in different directions and are very bodied.
