DEFINITION

As a literary device, hyperbole is often used in poetry and is frequently encountered in casual speech. Many times the usages of hyperbole describe something as better or worse than it really is.

Hyperboles offer critical insight into the understandings of one’s theory of knowledge and nature of one’s total being. These were the theories established about hyperboles hundreds of years ago.

The pun is also called paronomasia , it is a form of word play that suggests two or more meanings, by exploiting multiple meanings of words, or of similar-sounding words, for an intended humorous effect.

Puns are used to create humor and sometimes require a large vocabulary to understand. Puns have long been used by comedy writers, such as William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, and George Carlin.
