CYCLE?

What is the hydrosphere?

The hydrosphere is all the water on the surface of the earth.

How much of Earth’s surface is covered by water?

More than 70% of Earth’s surface is covered by water.

97% is salt water.

3% is fresh water.

How much of Earth’s surface is covered by water?

We can only use a small amount of fresh water because…most fresh water is found frozen in glaciers and ice caps. The rest is groundwater or water vapour.

Only about 0.3% of fresh water is found in rivers, swamps and lakes within our reach.

What is the water cycle process?

1. EVAPORATIONLiquid water becomes water vapour.

Page 9: Hydrosphere

What is the water cycle process?

2. TRANSPIRATIONPlants absorb water from the ground then the

water evaporates as water vapour.

3. CONDENSATIONA gas is changed into a liquid. When cold air makes water vapour condense to form clouds.

4. PRECIPITATION Clouds are a mixture of air, water vapour and

tiny drops of condensed water. These tiny drops form into bigger drops and create

precipitation (water). Precipitation falls from the air as rain, hail or snow.

5. SURFACE RUN-OFFWater from precipitation that runs off the surface of the Earth, filling lakes, streams,

rivers and oceans.

6. INFILTRATIONNot all water flows into rivers. Some water infiltrates through porous land surfaces into

the ground.
