Overview

London Hydrogen Partnership• Private/Public sector Partnership • Supported by the Mayor of London and Greater London Authority

Promoting Hydrogen technology in the capital to - • improve energy security and air quality• Reduce greenhouse gases and noise• Support London's green economy

London Hydrogen Action Plan 2010/12 - Main Aims:• Sets out project proposals which meet and support the Mayor of London’s Environment and Economic policy aims and objectives

• Move beyond demonstrations and trials and develop actual Hydrogen and Fuel Cell projects

Infrastructure• Deliver a Series of Interconnecting Hydrogen Refuelling Facilities in London

by 2012• Deployment of a minimum of six pieces of hydrogen refueling infrastructure

in the capital by 2012.

Vehicle Deployment• Deliver demonstration & deployment projects of early commercial Hydrogen

powered vehicles• Ambition to deploy a minimum of 150 hydrogen powered vehicles in the

capital by 2012.• 50 functional body hydrogen powered vehicles running by 2012.

Delivery 2010-2012

Hydrogen bus and cars refuelling and maintenance infrastructure, currently under construction (completion date Summer 2010)

London has deployed and continues to deploy hydrogen vehicles

London took part in both the original CUTE Project and the subsequent HyFLEET:CUTE extension which ran from 2003-2007 and saw:

• 3 fuel cell buses operating in London for a total of 12,800 hours and 180,000 km

• the construction of a refuelling facility and designated maintenance workshop

Transport for London is building on this experience to deploy a new project operational from late 2010 with:

• Up to 5 new fuel cell hybrid buses

• A new refuelling and maintenance facility and potential second refuelling facility

Example of the urban hydrogen vehicles which may form part of a London bid

London now wishes to form or join a consortium to submit an application for lighthouse project funding to the European Joint Technology Initiative.

The programme in London would be designed around high utilization and long range urban vehicles. Whilst no decision has been made as to the exact vehicles to be deployed, these might include:

• Taxis• Delivery vans• Motorbikes• Passenger cars

London wishes to submit a bid to the JTI as part of a consortium

We would also aim to deploy 2 new refuelling sites as part of the project

We are seeking city partners with similar aspirations .

Vehicles will be selected for the proposal on the basis of:

• The vehicle suppliers providing match funding for the vehicle purchase

• Users having been identified within the range of London’s urban users – where the vehicles play a clear role within their fleets

• Vehicle suppliers having a clear business plan which leads to vehicles available for purchase in London by 2015

• A minimum of 10 vehicles from a single provider

London also wishes to promote national industry development through the project.

Dependent on the exact nature of the call and the final consortium, London will look to deploy 20-60 urban vehicles.

Final consortium (September 2010)

JTI call (October 2010)

Vehicle deployment (by end 2012)

Infrastructure expansion

Vehicles available for purchase (2015)

The bid would demonstrate a clear path to commercialisation
