HSD Overview
How it works
What is it?Hybrid means that a vehicle has two power sources – in the Auris, we have petrol and electricity. There are 4 types of hybrid technology;
1. Micro Hybrid - a vehicle that has a standard engine with start/stop technology.
2. Series Hybrid - a vehicle that has an engine connected to a generator that powers electric motors on the wheels. There is no mechanical link to the wheels from the engine. (eg,
Vauxhall Ampere)
3. Parallel (MILD) Hybrid - a vehicle that has an engine and electric motor driving the wheels together. Cannot drive in electric mode only. (eg, Honda Insight and Accord)
4. Series-Parallel (FULL) Hybrid - a vehicle that can run on just the engine, just the batteries, or a combination of both. Allows vehicle to run in electric mode only. This is the type of technology that Toyota
uses and leads the world in. (Hybrid Synergy Drive – HSD)
• Starts the engine and charges the HV batteries
• Drives the vehicle wheels when acting as a motor• Recharges the HV battery and slows the car
down when acting as a generator by converting kinetic energy into electricity.
• Converts DC electricity into AC to drive the vehicle• Converts AC into DC electricity to charge the battery
• 200v DC Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH)• Stores and provides electricity from and to the inverter
• Connects the engine, MG1 and wheels together
