No More Qualifying TournamentsIn February 2012, Leandro Negre not
only proudly announced a major shift
in the Olympic ticket allocation system
(after the London Olympics), but also in
how teams will qualify for future editions
of the World Cup. This marked the end
of the qualifying tournaments and the
advent of the IHF World League. A new
worldwide competition format was cre-
ated, divided into four rounds and played
on a two-year cycle, which would allow
each nation to compete to earn a spot for
one or the other of these appointments.
How does it work? The first round is
played in every corner of the globe, by
teams ranked above nineteenth place in
the world rankings (20th among women).
The fourteen qualifiers are then joined
by nations occupying positions 12-19 in
the IHF standings. The nine best teams
then play the semi-finals in two separate
tournaments, against the global top 11
teams and the two host countries. Next,
a spotlight is shone on the eight-country
final! “This tournament offers a magnifi-
cent spotlight on hockey in every corner
of the globe,” welcomed the President
of the IHF. “And the increased number of
participants shows that our sport conti-
nues to grow globally.”
What else? In 2014, the first edition
of the World League was won by The
Netherlands, in both the Women’s and
the Men’s divisions.

Story of the dayAustralia, playing with their hearts
The performance of the Australian men and women on Sunday did not go unnoticed.
The two top teams crushed their opponents in their first match in Brasschaat and
together made a whopping 19 goals. That is equal to the total amount of goals scored in
the other games on Sunday. The Hockeyroos danced past the Polish women with a final
score of 9 against 0. The Kookaburras gave a demonstration to France with an easy 10-0
victory. The brothers Govers pulled the game to a higher level by each scoring two goals.
Australia did not only show his greatness on the
pitch. By wearing a black mourning band during
the games, they were an example for everyone.
In this way they wanted to pay tribute to a young
hockey player who lost his life in a car accident.
Differently to numerous other European countries, the sport became established
relatively late in Italy, as it was only in 1936 that hockey obtained its first
recognition, rather oddly joining the Italian Roller Skating Federation. It was only
in 1957 that the Hockey Federation was officially set up. And it was then that
the men’s team earned a 32nd place worldwide, with the Azzurre continuing
along their route to the top, relying on a great number of players with dual Italian-
Argentinian nationality. From then on, they continued to grow and be presented
as serious competitors, despite their sixteenth place in the world rankings. After
having won their tournament, in Montevideo, during the second tour of the World
League, the Italians are still hungry for success and adventure. It is certainly a
country to be watched carefully in Brasschaat.

• India is one of the 5 countries represented at the HWL with both a men and women team. This clearly shows the strength of Indi-an hockey at the highest level. Of course the men are great artists but the women possible even more so. What sport team can claim that it inspired Bollywood to a major film hit “Chak De! India”.
• After a long practice period, Irish “Dragons” Kyle Good, Shane O’Donoghue, Michael Watt and Eugene Magee are delighted to play on their “home ground” against Great Britain.
• The match Japan - Netherlands will be the 200th game of Maartje Paumen for the national team of the Netherlands. We are looking forward to the surprise of her teammates.

hier in Brasschaat.
