e The days are getting longer and the tropical South Florida heat is with us again. The sun is burning down on us and the air conditioners are

humming at full blast. The school year is coming to an end. While we are trying to decide between the pool or beach, our kids are already looking forward to their summer break. In a hurry, we are making last minute arrangements for summer camps and family vaca-tions. Summer is in the air!

This May issue of the Our City Magazines features our annual Summer Camp Guide, which showcases

the multitude of local summer camps and kids activities offered in your com-munity. For additional camps and activities, please visit our comprehensive online South Broward Summer Camp Guide at www.OurCityMedia.com.

In the midst of all this, spring is passing by and Mother’s Day has sneaked up on us. Let’s all take a little pause, reflect on what is important, and honor our mothers (and often our wives), for they are working hard and without pause to care for us, look after us, and pamper us. It’s time to truly pamper and spoil them for a change.

Have a fantastic Mother’s Day celebration!

Sincerely,

Sven BudzischPublisher/Owner

Six years ago, Inside Out Theatre started working with Gulfstream Middle School by bringing an “Arts Empower” program to their after school cur-riculum. Together with Memorial HealthCare System’s Youth Force, the duo

created a gang/bully prevention program and further went on to conceive an inter-generational project combining both seniors and youth. Last year the effort of that group went on to present “Removing the Tracks” which used the arts as a tool of dialogue to unite and bridge the demographic divide while strengthening the city.

The “Art of Community” program was so successful that the City of Hallandale Beach gave Robin Braun, Executive Artistic Director, from Inside Out Theatre Company, the cast and the partners a proclamation last summer. After the year-long arts engagement project in Hallandale Beach, Braun and her team wanted to continue their relationship with the goal of using arts to strengthen the community remaining the same. Therefore, they decided to put together a production of a Disney classic.

“Lion King JR.” will premiere at Hallandale High School on May 11th at 6:30 pm and is open to the public for free. The project is funded in part by the City of Hallandale Beach, hence using students and staff from the local middle and high schools.

The production is being directed by Robin Braun, Executive Artistic Director of Inside Out Theatre, and choreographed by Kendrick Jones, Director of Theatre at Hallandale High. The masks and puppets, which are an important part of the

“Lion King, JR.” are being created by Carla Guerra, the Art Teacher at Gulfstream Middle School, with the help of her students. Mr. Josue Aristyld, the Band Teacher at Gulfstream Middle School is working with some of his students on the Djembe drumming which is part of the production. Ms. Jamie Wood, Director of Memorial HealthCare System’s YouthForce and Ms. Christine Moss, Assistant Principal of Gulfstream are also key players in the project.

“‘The Lion King, JR.’ is an exciting project as it is the first time I am working with the students and the community on an award-winning musical,” says Robin Braun. “In the past, the work we have done together has been original, written and created by participants in the project. While that has been very gratifying, being able to work on a musical that everyone knows and loves, like the ‘Lion King, JR.’ is especially thrilling. I’m hoping the production will give residents an even greater sense of “pride” in their community and continue to connect people in the ways that theatre does.”

Since 1998 Inside Out Theatre has been serving South Florida with the mission of building character in youth and using the per-forming arts as a tool for personal and social change. For more information on the 501(3), not-for-profit organization, contact Robin Braun at 954-385-3060 or visit the website at www.inside-outtheatre.org

ws Over eight decades ago, in 1933, The

Little Theater of Hollywood was born. The active group performed

at various locations since they had no formal structure to call their own. During World War II, the group disbanded since casting men during the draft was difficult. Fourteen years later in 1947 they got back together and wanted their own facility.

The city commission donated the 2500 block between Washington and Dewey streets, which was at the western end of the city at that time. However, a “reverter clause” was applied to the donation that stated that the tract was to be returned to the city if not used for public performances.

Soon after, the landmark playhouse was designed by architect Kenneth Spry, one of the organizers of Hollywood’s Little Theater. The official dedication of the 18,000 square foot building was held in January of 1953. Gloria Swanson of “Sunset Boulevard” was among the many honored guests. At this time, only the foundation was complete. The actors performed their season outdoors while the audience watched on blankets and lawn chairs.

Finally in 1958 the theatre was complete and enjoyed many successful years. Unfortunately, as the years went by public interest and participation began to dwindle. Upon the new millennium of 2000, a new buyer began renovations with the intention to create a TV studio and an area for public performances. Suddenly it was abandoned and foreclosed leaving it exposed to looters who came to take everything including the building’s metal.

Plans were made by developers and the Hollywood Commission to remove the original donation “reverter clause”, rezone the property, demolish the playhouse, and build townhouses. A concerned group of citizens, including then-Hollywood

Commissioner Beam Furr and the Hollywood Historical Society organized and successfully petitioned the commission to reverse this decision. After a close vote, the Historical Society won 4-3 and revitalization plans began. Not long later, the

“reverter clause” was removed.Recently, Pastor Martin Vargas and his wife Lissette of The Real Church pur-

chased the land and started renovating and restoring the property. During the pro-cess, the Pastor found memorabilia a future historian had stored under the stage, some from the 1940s, and donated them to the Hollywood Historical Society.

Although, the historical property will now be a church, they are preserving it the best they can to still be remembered as the theatre it once was. It includes the original stage and curtain system, balcony, skylights and upstairs rehearsal room. An outdoor cafe is being added, and the lobby has become a tribute to the build-ing’s past.

Anyone who has any memorabilia from the theater is encouraged to contact the Hollywood Historical Society to donate. For more information, please call 954-923-5590 and leave a message.

One of Downtown Hollywood’s highlights is the monthly ArtWalk held the third Saturday of each month starting at 7pm. In addition to the

sounds of music seranading patrons and the galler-ies showcasing local, regional and international art-work, L. Mercado Studios invites ArtWalk attendees to create their own masterpiece.

This free interactive art activity is for adults and children of all ages. A different artist will do a dem-onstration in a medium of their choice and the public will be invited to participate. Guests may take their project home or donate it to the studio. Each project donated will be incorporated into the “L. Mercado Studios Hollywood ArtWalk Sculpture Project”.

This will be a mixed media installation that will consist of a collection of designs made by event

visitors. L. Mercado Studios (The Market Studios), a place where one can find different types of artists with unique talents, was founded by Hollywood resi-dents and mixed media and ceramic artists, Dorandy Mercado and Laura Gasper.

This creative team’s mission is to provide mem-bers of the Hollywood and South Florida communities educational opportunities to immerse themselves in the contemporary visual arts. Through classes, workshops, special exhibitions and events hosting visiting artists and master instructors, local artists will elevate their level of knowledge through exchange of expertise and ideas.

This month’s ArtWalk on May 21st will be the official L. Mercado Studios grand opening exhibition of “Mass & Nomads”. It will feature sculptural works

in ceramics by renowned street art-ists: Evoca1, Pixel Pancho, Tati Suarez and Twoone. The exhibition will present works executed during their latest visit-ing artist residency at the studio.

Subsequent art walks will showcase monthly gallery featured exhibitions. A total of seven more are scheduled to be shown during the 2016 exhibition calen-dar. Each will be curated by a different art professional to open the exchanges.

“We could have done this anywhere

else but we took a chance on Downtown Hollywood and the response from the community has been very rewarding,” says Mercado. “It’s gratifying to us to see other artists join-ing us in our journey, as they now have a place to display their artworks and grow. We are artists for the artists and we have the passion and the best interest in our hearts of seeing the city of Downtown Hollywood succeed in becoming an outstanding art district.”

L. Mercado Studios is located at 2000 Harrison Street, Hollywood. To inquire about classes and workshops in pottery, ceramics sculpture, glass working, draw-ing, painting, printmaking and paper art visit L.MercadoStudios.com or call 754-217-4713.

Elementary age students always have big dreams in their busy little brains on what they want to be when they grow up. Fortunately, teachers are able to share with their classes plenty of books on the frequently discussed topic.

For example, singer, songwriter, actor and author Al Yankovic, more commonly known as “Weird Al” Yankovic, wrote a funny tale titled When I Grow Up using his humor to explain the endless possibilities of what the future may hold.

“‘Cause maybe I’ ll be a gorilla masseuse Or an artist who sculpts out of choco-late mousse Or a rodeo clown or a movie director Or maybe professional pickle inspector...” –Al Yankovic

Hollywood Park Elementary Exceptional Student Education (ESE) teacher, Eileen Santiago felt the same way as the acclaimed author. She wanted to expose her students to the different types of careers available to them despite their learning challenges since she believes in their unlimited potential.

Santiago took it upon herself to coordi-nate a “Career Day” for her class on a level that they could understand. Santiago’s class consists of 8-10 year old boys and girls with varying Intellectual Disabilities such as language, visual and physical impairments as well as Down syndrome and Angelman syndrome. Hollywood Park Elementary has six cluster classrooms that service students with Intellectual Disabilities (InD) from grades K-5.

Many professionals took time out of their busy schedules to participate in this fun, yet educational day. Students were shown positions in a variety of capacities. Although there weren’t any butchers or candlestick makers, Santiago did manage to round up a baker.

Presenters included experts, parents and teachers from the following busi-nesses and/or professions:

▸ Hollywood Police Department with officers representing the Cyberbullying, K-9 and motorcycle units.

▸ Lt. Cathy Laucella, Marine Safety from City of Hollywood ▸ Katie Tutt, Share A Pet from Humane Society of Broward County ▸ Ian Wollinsky – Urban Farming Institute/Gourmet Gardener ▸ Coast Guard ▸ Christina Vasquez – WPLG Univision ▸ Guillermo Carbajal – Crossfit Coconut Creek ▸ Physical and Speech Therapists from Memorial Regional Hospital South ▸ Josh Silk, Trainer/Owner of Rhino Strength Fitness and Nutrition ▸ Jay Robinson – Recycling Representative from Broward County Schools ▸ Mr. Dolin – Corrections Officer ▸ Joe Zelinski – Coin Collectors ▸ Chanel Gonzalez – Voice Over and Radio ▸ Marlow Rosado - Music Producer ▸ Nathan Morris – Yoga Instructor from The Center for Healing ▸ Tiffany Altwood – Publix baker ▸ Alisha Ferguson and T. Walters – Registered Nurses ▸ Mary Zogg – Lawyer ▸ Joann Murphy – Florist ▸ Cicero Guimaires – Computer Technician ▸ Mari Diaz - Photographer

The students rotated in 20 minute increments with at least three presenters. They were encouraged to ask questions about the daily duties and responsibilities of the individual’s job.

“It was great to see students learning about their future and all the possibilities they have open to them,” says Santiago.

Miami Dolphins Youth Programs, in a partnership with the Greater Miami Athletic Conference (GMAC) and the Broward County Athletic Association (BCAA) hosted a Girls High School Flag Football Jamboree at the Doctors

Hospital Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University in March.Last year, nearly 250 girls and 12 teams took part in the clinic while 26 teams

participated in the jamboree. This year 650 girls and 28 teams from the South Florida area came out to represent their schools on the gridiron during the anticipated event. Therefore proving that the goal to promote high school football is indeed being achieved.

“Giving these girls an opportunity to come in the ‘bubble’, to watch the excitement on the girls faces and the enthusiasm they have when they come to play is one of the best parts,” said Rocky Gillis, County Athletic Director (BCAA). “It’s amazing to watch some of the athleticism the girls have on display. A lot of people don’t think of the game in that way, and when they come out they are fascinated once they get the opportunity to watch them.”

The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs’ mission is to emphasize the importance of education, physical fitness and positive choices for kids in a safe and

fun environment. The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs’ vision is to prepare the next generation of leaders in staying physically active through our Junior Training Camps (JTC), Youth Football Clinics and Youth Football Camps in the South Florida Community.

“It was great to see the high level of athleticism and passion for the sport at the jamboree today,” said Troy Drayton, Manager of Youth and Community Affairs. “These girls came to play.”

“My favorite part of the jamboree was watching all the teams that we are possibly going to play this year and see-ing how many girls are excited about the sport,” added Miami Jackson Head Coach Lakatriona Brunson, who partici-pated in the event for the first time along with Miami-Dade schools Coral Park, Miami Central and Miami Edison.

Hollywood Hills crushed Coral Park 13-0 and Hallandale High defeated Cypress Bay 13-2.

The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs’ vision is to prepare the next generation of leaders in staying physically active through our Junior Training Camps (JTC), Youth Football Clinics and Youth Football Camps in the South Florida Community.

West Hollywood Elementary students had the opportunity to visit a Royal Caribbean Cruise Line as part of the Kids and The Power of Work (KAPOW) program. KAPOW is a national network of business and

elementary school partnerships which introduce and expose students to career awareness through professionally designed lessons taught by volunteers in the classroom and on work sites.

Jennifer Wisnoski, KAPOW Coordinator and teacher at West Hollywood Elementary says, “We feel very fortunate to be able to motivate our students by integrating workplace concepts and skills into the curriculum. These skills con-nect the world of school to the world of work. With this program students can begin focusing on careers of their interest at an early age.”

There’s nothing more beneficial than giving children the opportunity to learn in a real hands-on environment, so a field trip to a work facility is made possible. In this case, the KAPOW partnership is sponsored by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and the City of Hollywood. They provided the volunteers in the school and the additional staff from their corporate and shipboard staff to conduct the visit and graciously welcomed the Wildcats on board.

These third graders said, “Bon Voyage” to the classroom and embarked on the Independence of the Seas which was docked at Port Everglades. Ninety-two stu-dents along with teachers and chaperoning parents were then able to appreciate a day off from the traditional learning campus and partake on a floating one.

The students were able to create fruit sculptures with a master chef, partici-pate in ship board recreational activities and enjoy lunch in the ship’s dining room. They also were exposed to jobs such as acting, entertaining, performing and cook-ing. Many workers on the ship were able to interact with the students by discussing what they do and answering all their questions.

John Casbarro, President of Learning for Success, Inc. which manages KAPOW in South Florida states, “Young people need to understand that there is a rea-son for studying beyond doing so for the sake of learning. The KAPOW program addresses this need by helping young people understand early in life that reading,

writing, and math are vital to success, in school, work, and life.”

KAPOW is always looking for business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participating in the program. For information, visit www.kapowlfs.org; send an email to [email protected] or call 954-680-3916.

It’s No Sea-cret That learning Can Be Fun!BY BeverlY Perkins

It was game on for these dedicated Bulldogs as they attempted a Guinness World Record. South Broward High School boys and girls water polo teams attempted to achieve a record break-

ing fact and achievement to earn the coveted Guinness World Record title.

The purpose was not only to beat the record of the lon-gest polo match of 24 hours, but to raise funds for new swim caps and team uniforms. The team began the water polo match at 9:05am on March 19th at the Aquatics Center at South Broward High School with the goal to play continuously for 36 hours.

The ambitious students began with the girls’ team playing against the boys’ team. The rules stated that players are allowed 5 minutes rest every hour or they may bank the time to be used later. Coach Chris Bloese planned on having the match continue in four hour increments to give the players 20 minutes to rest and grab a little sleep.

“The way these kids have stepped up when they heard all the rules they needed to abide by, including not being able to leave the SBHS Aquatics Center, they’re excited and fully commit-

ted to achieving this goal”, said Coach Bloese. “No matter what, I couldn’t be more proud.”

While Guinness representatives were not present, indepen-dent witness were on-site to supervise the attempt as were volunteer referee along with a host of parents and South Broward High School Staff.

Despite the fact that the Bulldogs fell short of their origi-nal goal of a 36-hour water polo marathon, they managed to beat the standing record of 24 hours. The Bulldogs played

for 28 hours and 37 minutes before their efforts were cut short by inclement weather.

Coach Bloese continued by saying, “Battling exhaustion, sun-burn, and burning eyes the athletes proved to everyone, but most

importantly themselves, that they were not quitters. Determined to meet their goal the athletes were ready to overcome these obstacles to do so.”

The teams were grate-ful to all the friends and family who came out to show their support. They also couldn’t have done it without referee Richard Cook who lost an entire nights and morning’s sleep and Matt Shephard who refereed on Friday evening.

t Morning sickness. Weight gain. Skin changes. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and

abdominal areas. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles, and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, caus-ing stretch marks.

Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result can be smaller breasts despite fullness of the waist and abdomen.

Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts can deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps. Once again, a mommy makeover can help.

A mommy makeover is performed using a unique combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to counteract the physical effects of childbear-ing, and restore and enhance your body. In general, a mommy makeover may include:

▸ Breast augmentation ▸ Breast lift ▸ tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)

▸ Butt lift ▸ Liposuction

For example, some women need breast augmentation to correct severely deflated breasts, while others may need breast implants in combination with a breast lift. In the abdominal area, many women need a full abdominoplasty with tightening of the muscle layer as well as removal of the excess skin and fat. Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips and thighs, and smooth out their contours. Finally, an increasing number of women have also been requesting a buttock lift and other buttock-enhancing options, such as the Brazilian butt lift, as part of their mommy makeover.

The length of the surgery varies based on the amount and type of proce-dures performed. Some surgeons may perform a mommy makeover as two or more separate operations.

It is important to ask yourself certain questions before deciding to have a mommy makeover.

▸ are you done having children? If you plan to have more children, wait. The vertical muscles in the abdomen (which are tightened during a tummy tuck) can re-separate.

▸ are you at a stable weight? Being at a stable weight before surgery can help maximize the results. Lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery.

▸ are you finished breastfeeding? You should wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery because the enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast dur-ing nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection.
