COMPANY PROFILE
• HVF,AVADI- Heavy vehicles factory, Armoured Vehicles and Ammunition Depot of India.
• HVF was setup in 1965 by the Ordance Factories Board, Government of India to manufacture heavy battlefield equipment, including Vijayantas and T-72 tanks.
• Currently, HVF manufactures India’s main battle tank ARJUN and the T-90s. The engine factory of HVF functions separately from HVF.
PARTS OF TANK
The main parts of tank are
i) Hull ii) Turret
MECHANISM USED
Rotary conveyor Turret traversing

OPERATIONS USED
• Turning• Grinding• Boring• Drilling• Reaming• Honing• Gear Hobbing• Gear Shaping
TRANSMISSION
GEAR BOXControls the mobility of the tankIt controls power transmission, break as well as steeringThere are two gear boxes in the tankPower Transmission- Epicyclic gear trainSide gear boxes are designed to change
– The speed of the motion and tractive forces on the track drive sprockets
– To steer and brake the tank
– To disengage the engine from the track drive sprocket
EPICYCLIC GEAR TRAIN
• Epicyclic gear train consist of a sun gear, annulus(internal gear ring) and set of planetary gears mounted on a carrier.
• Six speed ratios – Two over drives – Two reductions and – Two reverse speeds.
• When two members are interlocked a direct drive of speed ratio 1:1 can be obtained.
• Two epicyclic gear trains coupled in series provide four gear ratios
• Two epicyclic gear trains compounded gives three speed ratio by releasing or engaging the clutch and brakes
EPICYCLIC GEAR TRAIN(Cont..)
• Right hand side gear box consists of only one suction pump.
• Both left and right side gear trains are similar in construction
• Except that the left hand gear box contains one delivery pump for feeding oil under pressure, to the hydraulic control and power train lubrication system
EPICYCLIC GEAR TRAIN(Cont..)
• Each gear box consists of – Body consisting of front flange, middle drum, rear flange and final drive.– Driving(primary) and driven(secondary) shafts– 5 planetary gear trains( 4 inside the gear box and one in final drive)– Frictional elements six sets:
• 4 friction brakes for braking element of planetary gear trains(T1,T4,T5,T6)
• Two clutches for interlocking elements (F2 and F3) of planetary gear trains.
– Hydraulic boosters for engaging the frictional elements. One booster for each frictional elements
– Throw out device: 7sets of springs which push the hydraulic boosters to I the initial position such that a gap of 3-5mm is created between the frictional elements
– Ball breaking mechanism to engage friction elements(T4 and T5)
PLANETARY GEAR TRAIN ARRANGEMENT
• FIRST TRAIN:– Sun gear S1 on bearing carrying moving friction disc of brake T1 and
clutch F2. Planet pinion mounted on carrier C1, no annulus is provided in the first train
• SECOND TRAIN:– Sun gear S2 mounted on input shaft planet pinion mounted on
carrier C2 and annulus A2 and friction disc of T6 and F2
• THIRD TRAIN:– Sun gear S3 integrated on the input shaft, planet pinion mounted on
carrier C3 and annulus A3
• FOURTH TRAIN:– Sun gear S4 carrying friction disc F3 and T4, planet pinion mounted
on carrier C4 and annulus A4
PLANETARY GEAR TRAIN ARRANGEMENT(Cont.,.,)
Output from C4 which is splined on the output shaft is the input to the fifth planetary to the gear train(final drive)
•FIFTH TRAIN:– Sun gear S5is fixed on the output shaft of the gear box, Planet pinion
mounted on carrier C5, the splines of the carrier is splined to the final sprocket and annulus A5 is fixed to the final housing
