The revolutionary arc extinguishingsystem
RotaryFUJI VCBs have employeda unique designprinciple in which thecontacts are providedwith a succession of slitshaving toroidal-type CrCu contactsmounted on them. The arc is driven round the circularcontact surface as it is beingextinguished. Since the arc is notlocalized at one point there is no fear ofoverheating. This results in much improved inter-electrode dielectric strength so ensuringexcellent breaking capability. More-over, uneven contact wear is minimized.
GetterFUJI vacuum interruptersmake use of the getteringeffect. The toroidal-typecontacts are made of aspecial chromium-copper(CrCu) alloy specially developed byFUJI so as to ensure a large “getter”quality. The metallic gases thus produced atinterruption and left in the vacuum arequickly absorbed by the getter. Thegases are neutralized so maintainingthe high degree of vacuum. The interrupters require a minimum ofattention over their long service life.
SurgeSwitching surges can begenerated at smallcurrent breakingdue to the VCB inherentchopping current.FUJI has paid much attention to thisproblem, and after much effort ondesign and materials research it hasbeen possible to reduce the choppingcurrent to 3.5 Amps. This very smallchopping current means that thecorresponding surge voltage will bereduced and cost efficient surgeprotection can be carried out for motors, transformers and other load equipment.

Advantages
Progress of arc extinctionArcs generated by VCBs have inherentcharacteristics that change whenapproximately 10kA is reached. Lessthan 10kA a dispersed arc occurs, overthis value the arc is concentrated. Thephotos were taken consecutively andillustrate an interruption in the 25kArange (concentrated arc). About 41/2rotations occurred (10ms at 50Hz).This time is typical, but variesaccording to breaking current andarcing times.
Explanation1. The contacts begin to open and the
arc moves from the center to the lefthand side.
2. 3. The arc is driven round the toroidal-type contact surface.
4. The contacts are in the full openposition just before interruption iscompleted.
Definitions What is the action of the “getter”?Sometimes called a “degasser” the“getter” uses a special material such aszirconium alloy that has the property ofabsorbing metallic gases in a vacuum. This allows the high degree of vacuumto be maintained.
Switching surges and VCBs?Switching surges can be generatedwhen breaking currents within severalhundreds range.VCB inherent switching surges aregenerated under certain specificconditions which mainly comprisecurrent chopping surges and multiplecurrent reignition surges. No problem isposed by switching surges whenbreaking current exceeds severalhundred amperes.
Surge voltagesThe value of the surge voltage due toswitching surges varies according to the
load circuit conditions. This can be expressed in the followingsimple formula:Surge voltage = Surge impedance Chopping currentTherefore, it is necessary to keep thechopping current low in order to reducethe surge voltage to the minimum. Thepeak transient voltage is obtained byadding to the above calculation thevoltage on the load side at the time ofcurrent chopping.
Chopping surgeThe chopping surge occurs when a lowcurrent is interrupted, the arc is unstablebefore current becomes zero and thecurrent is forcedly chopped. At this timea surge is generated by the energyremaining in the load inductance.Example:When the no-load interruption of atransformer is carried out the excitingcurrent only is interrupted.
Chopping surge
Multiple reignition surgeThe multiple reignition surges can occurwhen breaking currents range from tensto hundreds of amperes. Although noproblem is normally posed even whenbreaking these currents,
1* Chopping surge suppresed by reignition 2* Chopping surge not accompanied with reignition

Application guide of surge absorberWhen VCBs are interrupted especially under specificoverlapping conditions, chopping surges or surges due tomultiple restrikes will cause an escalating effect. It is therefore recommended that surge absorbers and arrestersare fitted to protect motors or transformers.
Vacuum condition tester/VC-1AIt is recommended that a withstand voltage tester (type VC-1A,sold separately) is used to check the state of the vacuum withinthe vacuum interrupter. The method of testing is very simple.First, withdraw the VCB from its enclosure set at the OFFposition and switch the control circuit to the isolation position. Then earth the VCB together with the VC-1A tester and apply atest voltage. In this case apply 22kV (if the VCB's rated voltageis 7.2kV) between the poles of the vacuum interrupter for oneminute. Under these conditions if the vacuum is normal acontinuous buzzer signal will be given during the period the testvoltage is applied. On the other hand an intermittent buzzer sound will be given ifthe vacuum is unserviceable. Replace with a new interrupter ifnecessary.

Design featuresThe four dials facilitate the setting of theovercurrent protection as follows:
Rated operating currentRated current range: 24 to 320A(8 to 80A)No. of steps: 15Steps from 24A to 320A can be set bythe two dials—CT’s primary current dialand multiplying factor dial of primarycurrent. These breakers are mostsuitable for receiving and distributingfacilities with capacities from 6kV, 170 to2000kVA. Since the rating for theprimary current can be freely changedexpenses for changing the CT ratio canbe saved when expanding electricalfacilities.
Operating timeNo. of steps: 16 (T=50 to T=0.5)The operating time setting dial of thesolid-state OCR’s corresponds with thetime lever of the induction type OCR’s. Ithas 16 steps, fromT = 50 to T = 0.5.
Instantaneous trip currentTrip current: 5 to 15 times the operatingcurrent. This device is designed toinstantaneously trip when a large currentflows due to a short-circuit fault. It canbe set so it does not operate in the faceof inrush currents due to eithertransformers or capacitors and acoordination can be arranged withprimary circuit breakers. It can be set tooperate at between 5 and 15 times itsoperating current.

Design features Auto. V improves system
dependabilityFUJI solid-state type OCR’s are providedwith the ideal inverse time characteristicsinstead of the conventional electronic typelinear characteristics. In the case of the conventional inductiontype OCR’s their long inverse time zone incharacteristic curves do not extendsmoothly, and so they do not meet therequirements of the operatingcharacteristics of L. V. breakers thusmaking it difficult to arrange acoordination. The operating time of Auto.V’s at 300% current has been greatlyimproved to 10 sec. as against 2 to 3 sec.for conventional OCR’s. The function toextend the operating time by five times, anoption of the previous Auto. V is includedin the new Auto. V as a standard feature.
Inertia characteristics exceed 90%The inertia characteristics correspond withthe “non-operating characteristics(permissible)”.When carrying out the coordination withthe low voltage MCCB’s, it is necessary toconsider the “non-operatingcharacteristics” and “coordination” inwhich the inertia characteristics are takeninto consideration. In the case of the induction type OCR’sthe inertia characteristics normaly exceed60%, thus make it difficult to establishcoordination with low voltage MCCB’s.On the other hand in the electronic typeOCR’s their inertia characteristics exceed90%, giving them ideal operatingcharacteristics.
The overcurrent withstanding valueof the CT is 12.5kA
The CT built in the Auto. V is extremelysmall in size but its toroidal design permitsit to withstand overcurrents having valuesas large as 12.5kA for1 sec.
CT with large overcurrent constantThe internal CT’s overcurrent constant of20 or more was achieved by combining aCT with a very low activation power OCR.When using a CT in combination with aprotective relay, the CT’s overcurrentconstant must be large enough for theovercurrent. To determine compatibility, overall OCR operation must be checkedfrom the combined CT and OCRcharacteristics as shown in the figure atright.
The operating characteristics of Auto. Vand induction type OCR (FUJI CH1-53 type)
The inertia characteristics of Auto. V andinduction type OCR
CT overcurrent constant and OCRoperation characteristics
Operating characteristics ofovercurrent relays
The curves indicate the time-currentcharacteristics of OCR’s. Thesecharacteristics meet the requirements ofJIS C4602 “Overcurrent Relays forH. V. Power Receiving”Note: For practical dial setting method or the test
method of solid state OCR’s please contactFUJI.
Note:* Overcurrent constantIn CT the secondary current increases proportionallyto the increase of the primary current. When the value exceeds a certain value a saturationtakes place due to magnetic saturation. Theovercurrent constant(n) indicates the value obtainedby dividing, the current value at the point where theerror reaches 10%, by the rated current.
Current at the point wherethe error reach 10%
n = —————————————Rated current
JEC190 (1977) instrument transformer for protectiverelay is stipulated as “n>5, n>10 and n>20”. It isnecessary that they have an adequately largeovercurrent constant when incorporated withprotective relays.

from the service position to the test position.2. Under the condition where the contactor is closed, it is
impossible to change it from the test position to the serviceposition.
3. At both the test and the service positions, the interlock pinwill engage and so lock the contactor in position. Thus thepositions are always fixed correctly. Even if a closingoperation is carried out at an intermediate position, thecontactor cannot be closed.
Electrical interlockWhen the interlock pin is locked at both the service and testpositions the limit switch will be closed, and the contactor canbe operated.

Protective relays DUT
Features• The DUT series digital type protective relays have been
developed to replace the conventional induction type, rectifier type, and static type DQ series relays.
• The DUT series relay has a single protection functionincorporating with a 16-bit CPU and output circuit.
• Six kinds of protective relays such as OCR, OCGR, OVR,OVGR, UVR, and DGR are available.
• The operation of overcurrent relay can be selected from 6kinds of inverse time-lag characteristics and independenttime-lag characteristics.
• They continuously monitor the CPU and the power supply, and are activated when a defective condition is detected.
• The mass has been reduced by using molded plastic resinfor the relay-case and the front cover of the relay.
• Forced operation function can be executed by switching, which facilitates sequence checking. Forced reset functionfacilitates periodical inspection.
• They have the same mounting size as the previous DQseries relays, making replacement easy. Note, however, that the teriminal numbers and terminal locations of thedigital type relay are different from those of the previoustype relays. The digital type relay needs an auxiliaryenergizing source. DQ series replacement relays having
