That They May Know Fanning into Flame “You can’t give away what you don’t have.” When I heard those words, they pierced me to the heart. I was a young father, and an older brother in Christ was encouraging me in my role as husband and father. He was helping me to understand that being the spiritual lead-er of my family involved more than taking my family to church and praying before our meals. He helped me to un-

derstand that if I wanted my children to trust in God, then they needed to see me trusting in God. They needed to see me trusting in God in all things, no matter the circumstances, no matter the situation, no matter the consequences. Why would I “hope” things for them if they were not seeing those very things lived out in my life on a daily basis? So much of my life was blatant hypocrisy. I encouraged my chil-dren to trust in God, yet most everything I did, I trusted in myself. I talked to them about God’s grace and forgiveness, yet they rarely expe-rienced grace and forgiveness from me. I wanted them to have faith, yet the faith that I put on display was shallow and self-serving. The ser-vice I did for others was not to put God’s glory on display; it was to bring me glory. Most everything I did was to make much of me and little of God. So what was it that I “had” that I was giving away? I would call it a Pharisaical faith. It was a faith that was devoid of any internal power that put the grace and mercy of God on display. It was full of external adornment. External adornment can be tiring to pull off, but overall it is pretty easy. It comes without all that sticky, messy stuff like loving your wife “as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” You don’t have to deal with the heart of the behavior in your children; you simply de-mand outward obedience. There is no concern about provoking your children to anger; your concern is about discipline and instruction that leads to a quiet and easy life for you. So, what is it that you have and are giving away to the children in your life? Has your walk with Christ infiltrated every part of your life? Do your actions flow out of your obedience to God and the truth of his Word? Do you trust in God no matter the circumstances? Our prayer is that with God’s sustaining love, and his never ending grace and mercy, you can live a life that others will look at and declare, “No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised” (Romans 4:20-21).

Vince Scarbrough

On Sunday I concluded my sermon with the story of the power-ful gospel encounter I experienced with a young woman in Thai-land. My goal was to illustrate the scriptural principle that when we commit to join God in his mission, his Holy Spirit goes before us. It was the summer of my sophomore year of college and

some hometown friends and I were catching up late one night, over some pancakes. As we finished our meals and got up to pay, I overheard some men at the table across from us making some inappropriate comments to-ward a young lady that was with my group. They were a group of guys that had just got off work from a local factory and they were offering their best catcalls! It embarrassed my friend and my group did our best to ignore them and we promptly left. My heart welled up with compassion for those guys and not being able to withstand the prompting of the Spirit any longer, I yelled, “Stop the Jeep!” My friends thought I was crazy, but I asked them to turn around and to take me back to the Huddle House. Though I knew God was calling me to go back to talk with those men, I was scared to death. My heart raced, my palms were sweaty, and I had no idea what I was going to say. I exited the car and as I entered the restaurant, I secretly hoped they wouldn’t be there. But there they were, just as I had left them, continuing to spew enough profanity to make an NFL referee blush. I took one step toward them and I literally froze in fear. I quickly formu-lated plan B. I turned and went to the counter and ordered a piece of pie. While the worker was ringing me up, I was having this internal argument with myself. “Cameron, you didn’t come back here to order pie! Trust God and step over and talk to those dudes!” So with pie in hand, I turned to their table and said, “Guys, mind if I join you?” They quieted down and with puz-zled looks they simply said, “Sure.” As I sat down I shared the following, “Hey guys, my name is Cameron and while this might seem a bit unusual, I’m a Christian. When I was here earlier, God put it on my heart to come over and talk to you guys, but I didn’t. So now I’m back, and well, I was just wondering if you have ever seriously con-sidered Jesus?” To my surprise, one by one, the guys at the table took turns sharing about their encounters with Christ. It was evident that the Spirit was at work as each reflected in a serious and even somber manner. One man said that he knew Christ as child but hadn’t given much thought to his faith in a very long time. Another said that he knew he was living in sin and needed to get right with God. The conversation continued for the next half hour or so and I encouraged each of them to pursue Christ and I prayed for them before I left. I rose to leave and they thanked me for caring enough to come and share with them. That night served as a reminder for me that God is just as active over a greasy plate of grits at the local diner, as he is in the midst of golden idols in a far away land.
