It has mostly been obvious that Seniors get the lower half of the section so that they can be closer to the action because they are older, but in recent years, that has started to change due to the fact that underclassmen want to stand in those sections. Of course, most seniors do not like them to stand there, so there has been some conflict in those situations. Now, a new HHS regulation has been released that from now on, until the end of the first quarter of the game, seniors get the first pick on the first, second and third rows for all sports. As the new school year begins, new students arrive. There are Seniors, happily awaiting graduation. There are Juniors, dreading the ACT. Lastly, but certainly least, there are Sophomores, thinking that they won?t be made fun of anymore. Sophomores are new to the high school, and that may be tough on its own, but it?s not all they have to deal with.

When asked what the worst thing about being a Sophomore was, all Madison Bingham said was that ?everyone hates us.? She has an older brother, a Senior at the school, who agrees with that statement. When asked the same question, Brinley Hayes says that the worst things are ?being at the bottom and not being a senior.? At this moment, the saying ?you wish you were a senior? has never been more true.

On the other hand, there are also some benefits to being a sophomore. Hayes was asked if there were any pros to being a sophomore and her answer was that ?it?s an upgrade from being at the middle school and sports are better and more fun.? Whereas Bingham said, ?I don?t know.? Some sophomores are glad that they?re at the high school. While others would rather be freshmen again.

The top secrets of Area 51, the highly classified information on the housing of extraterrestrial life forms on the air force facility, remain unknown. But what is Area 51? It was created after the cold war between the US and Soviet Union as a testing facility for aircraft. The government didn't officially confirm its existence until 2013. In June of this year a California student made a joke about raiding Area 51 and it started an internet sensation where millions of people signed petitions online to raid Area 51 saying, ?They Can?t Stop Us All.? The raid was set for September 20th, 2019. Only about 3,000 actually showed up. One hundred of them made it to the gate, and two of them managed to get arrested only hours into the event. Andres Tirado has given his opinion, ?I thought the raid was a good idea. I really wanted myself an alien gf; I couldn't find one here.? The outcome included couples, kids, families, even older people just looking to have a good time. The guards on duty were said to be extremely nice, laughed and talked to everyone, they were even willing to take photos with anyone that asked.

There are many traditions at Hurricane High School. After asking a few students what their favorite tradition is, they all said that homecoming was their favorite. Tiffany Harris said, ?It is so much fun. I love how the hallways all have their own theme for each of the graduation classes.? Decorating the 100, 200 and 300 halls with your graduating class, shows how much school spirit each student has. Brenna Dessormeau was asked what she thought about her graduating class hall this year. She said that, ?The senior hall was outstanding how they decorated it with aliens and made it all about the Area 51 raid and mauling the mustangs at the homecoming game. I think the seniors demolished the sophomore and junior halls this year. Seniors are the ultimate class of HHS!? There is more to the homecoming tradition than just decorating the hallways. Marissa Wikan told us about her favorite part of homecoming. ?After the Powder Puff game was really amazing. We all gathered around at the back of the bleachers and lit the metal H on fire that was covered in old shirts and gas. While the H is on fire, all the classes do their class comps, trying to beat everyone else. We showed how much spirit we have as a school, all in a few hours! I loved it.? These traditions at our school bring us all together as a tiger family and it shows everyone around how much spirit and love and support we have for each other.

From the moment each of the fifteen contestants were voted on, they wouldn?t know what to expect next. The weeks ahead of them would be filled with long nights and lots of work. Tasci Wood says, ?These few weeks ahead may not be fun for you guys but in the end, I think it might be worth it.? The week after the vote, all fifteen boys gathered in the main gym of Hurricane High to start practicing their Mr. Tiger dance. Each practice is very slow and the boys lose almost all interest in practice. After many practices the contestants started getting the hang of the dance and it became more and more fun. As the week went by they started to see the progress they made and finally mastered the dance. When it was finally the week of homecoming a lot of the boys started to get very anxious about performing in front of a live audience. Maci Mandle said, ?We had to calm the boys down and tell them that it?s all going to be okay.? All the boys are nervous but once they start the assembly everybody gets into their groove and it all goes very smoothly. In the end, the dance was a hit and all the contestants had a great time doing it.

Most people get their first job when they are still in high school, but it can sometimes be difficult to find a job well suited to the schedule of a high schooler. We still have school, which obviously (and unfortunately) comes with homework and extracurricular activities. It is important to find a job that will give a flexible enough schedule to accommodate busy high schoolers that still need a job. Luckily, Hurricane holds many high school friendly job opportunities.

Coral Cliffs Cinema 8 employs many students. Maddy Reber has been working there since April and she says that it?s a great job to have while you?re still in school. It?s a low-stress job except for during the holidays when all the big movies come out and shifts are longer. Management at Coral Cliffs is also very accommodating about letting students have time off for their necessary activities. Maddy loves it but she says, ?The worst part is when kids in my grade come in and expect to get in for free or get free concessions because we talked one time. Like suddenly we?re buddies.? Other than that, she says it?s an amazing job.

JC Penney, at Red Cliffs Mall, has become the employer to several of Hurricane High?s students and, although it is a bit of a commute, they are loving it. Senior, Annelise Fogleman has worked there for 2 months and she had a lot of good things to say about it. ?They?re really good about giving me the time off I need,? she said. She also said that they close at a decent time so she still has time to do homework when she gets home.

There are many potential jobs in Hurricane that are student-friendly; St. George has a lot too if you?re willing to make the commute and compete with the other high schools. For most students, it isn?t necessary to get a job in high school, but it is nice when it comes to gaining experience, saving for college, and paying for fun things throughout the school year.

Fashion is focused on what is hot or trending right now. A trend

is something that is popular at that point in time. Style is what

represents you; your style is what people will notice first. A lot

of people have a variety of different styles, also known as

fashion. Let 's take it back to the 90s real quick. Back then, the

trend for clothes was ripped jeans, cropped tops, overall

dresses and something called 'mom jeans.' Today, those fashion

choices are slowly making a come back. As you walk through

the halls of school, or even just down the street, there will be at

least someone who will have ripped jeans or a cropped top.

When asked what they thought about today?s trends, Emmalee

Hirschi responded with, "it 's kind of like the 80s and 90s but

more modern." Cayleb Jackman said, "It 's weird, everybody is

wearing vans.? And Josie Duhon adds on with, "it all depends on

what makes you feel good and what you like." Some people will

wear what makes them feel comfortable and what they think is

cute. The majority of people will only wear certain things

because the people surrounding them are.

90s Trends are BackBy: Jayde Jackm an

Did the love of your life just dump you because you didn?t treat her right and you thought you did? Well ladies and gents, I?m here to teach you how to treat your sweetheart right. Brianna Lacy, Junior of HHS, said, ?if you want to be treated like a person and not a goddess it helps if you put the same amount of effort in?. However, another girl from HHS, Torie Payne, said she prefers ?to be treated like a queen and spoiled to death." Another student at HHS said, ?I?d love my girlfriend to treat me with kindness and care. Her showing that she appreciates what I do for her and showing me some gratitude with love and appreciation can really make me happy to be with her.? These are very good and I agree with all of them. It?s not necessarily about the big things, but more about the small things. You have to put time and effort into a relationship to make it work out the way you want it to. You have to treat every girl you talk to with respect. Make sure you respect her feelings and decisions; be patient and work things through. There will be some rough patches, but you?ve got to get through it and trust me you will.

Jersey ThursdayBy: Dave Br iones

Students and teachers in Hurricane High School love to wear jerseys every Thursday. One particular student named Jansen Ence said, ? We wear jerseys because we love sports and to show our support the players that we?ve looked up to since we were kids.? This is just one of the many reasons students wear jerseys on Thursday. Other students say that wearing jerseys is the hottest trend at Hurricane High School right now, so they want to follow the trend. The Hurricane High teachers and principal liked the idea of wearing jerseys every Thursday, so they support and wear throwback jerseys. The jerseys that teachers wear were the ones they had when they were in high school, and playing sports. The trend is spreading throughout every single high school in Southern Utah. Sports are one-way teachers and other students communicate with each other. Everyone loves sports, especially teenagers. Sports and jerseys also connect people, because you can make new friends. Luke Christian said, ?Jerseys and Sports connect people because they are passionate about sports.?

Teacher of the month goes too...Mr. Clifford! Students all around Hurricane High School have voted for Mr. Clifford up on the 3rd floor. I have asked students why he deserves teacher of the month, they all have said ?Mr. Clifford understands math isn?t always easy but he tries his best to make it easier for the ones who don?t understand math that well.? For the 3 years Clifford has been at the high school, he has made math easier and ten times better than you?d expect math to be. Seniors from all around the school have said that when they took his class they thought he was going to be tough and mean but he turned out to be one of the nicest teachers. All students and staff go ahead and tell Mr. Clifford CONGRATULATIONS!!

As sports begin to start up at Hurricane High, we would like to recognize a player who is dedicated,

and puts all her time into playing this sport. Halee Odgen is one of our senior volleyball players. She

is a very sweet and loving person, but she is also very competitive when it comes to the game.

When I asked Halee what the biggest fear she overcame was, she said ?a fear I've overcome is the

fear of losing. I?ve always wanted to win, but when it got close the thought of losing was scary and

we wouldn't play our best. Also the thought of people watching?. Halee has been playing volleyball

since 4th grade, ?I've always loved volleyball and when I did rec league it was always so fun. I'd come

watch the high school games and it always looked fun and I knew that if I worked really hard I could

get better, and learn to play really good? Ogden stated.

Being a player means more than just being good at the sport, it means all the time and effort that is

put into it. Becoming a player on a team that is well rounded and has good sportsmanship, allows

her to be who she is today. Halee is a very kind person who will do anything she is asked; she

spends litt le time she has doing homework and hanging with her friends. She is a well-recognized

player at Hurricane High, and one thing that sticks out is her love the game and her teammates. She

is always there for her teammates on and off the court willing to lift them up when needed.

School shootings happen all over the world and

in the United States. Recent events have showed that

it can happen in our small area of southern Utah, as

well. Luckily, there have not been tragic events, like

these shootings, at Hurricane High. We have had some

close calls and we know things could happen here and

that they are a likely event. So how do we prepare or

prevent an event like this from ever happening at

Hurricane High? The Hurricane administration has

drills to prepare us for any events that take place and

they have these drills at random so the students will

not know when they will happen. By having them

random, it will prepare students for an event like this if

one were to happen. We, as students and teachers,

need to take these drills more seriously and treat

them as if they were real. The administration team

also has a meeting every month to go through these

scenarios and how to prepare students for any kind of

threat. Hurricane High also has an officer in the school

at all t imes. The school does not just let anyone in the

school; they have to go through the office first. During

class, all doors leading to the outside are locked until

class is over. This helps so no one can get in the

building without going through the office first. Tips are

one of the biggest bits of help in these kinds of

threats. If there are tips or threats they are

immediately investigated by the administration and by

the police. The biggest help of all is that if we as

students of Hurricane High ?hear something, say

something? said Mr. Mckeehan. We are the first line of

defense in these kinds of events and if you hear

something you need to say something.

There are those among us that try to make a difference or stand out to others. I decided to find a couple of those students. To do so I went to the admin for some suggestions. My goal here is to shout out those who are trying to make a difference in our school and community. Also, those who stand out for their kind actions and bright personality.

Reeve is a Sophomore that attends Hurricane High School. Reeve has lately been working on his Eagle Scout project. Instead of doing something that involves building or painting like most projects. Reeve has decided to host a 1-night suicide prevention class. The class will be held at Hurricane High School in the Zion Lecture Hall. The date he is shooting for is October 10, 2019. From a study done in 2017 by the Utah Department of Health; an estimate 628 people commit suicide a year in Utah. His main goal in this class is to help others understand the signs of suicide. Hopefully doing so could help prevent some suicides. ?We all have to watch out for each other. We are only human? (Reeve).

Starley is the starting quarterback for our football team. As long as Starley could remember, he always dreamed about being a quarterback. His first time starting in that position was in 5th grade. Ever since fifth grade he has been the starting quarterback. He is now a senior and living his dream. ?My favorite thing about the student body is the pride everyone has for the H? (Starley). The hurricane football team has a strong built culture. It?s respected by many teams they face. The culture is something they live by. Brock Starley represents this culture very well on and off the field. ?The biggest thing that impresses me is his maturity in his leadership? (Miller).

Traditions in Hurricane are sacred. Hurricane High School started in 1906 with the help of Ira E. Bradshaw by holding classes in the living room of her home. Hurricane High?s first graduating class was in 1927-28 school year. And this is where the traditions started to grow for Hurricane High School. Hurricane High has been known for how well the community supports the sports and different clubs . This is because of the small-town atmosphere and the many close family and friend connections around the valley. Zane McKeehan, a forever fan of Hurricane High School, said, ?Something is just different about Hurricane High that separates them from other schools. Hurricane?s fan base is because of the many traditions that have been made and will stay for a long time.? One of these traditions is burning the H right after the powderpuff game, during Homecoming week. Research shows that this tradition of burning the H at powderpuff has been around since the early 90?s. But this isn?t the only lasting tradition that has been around for Hurricane High School. One tradition that will forever be at Hurricane High is the love for their sports teams. Even though we might be losing, or if we are winning, it doesn?t matter for Hurricane High School fans in the stands. Summer Cornelius, one of high school librarians, loves when the seniors whitewash the H on the hillside at the end of the school year. She says, I think that whitewashing the "H" is a long standing tradition that will remain for years. It 's something that would be difficult to deem exclusive, offensive, or disrespectful, and something that needs to be done. Hopefully it remains a tradition for seniors for generations." The last and final tradition at Hurricane High School that will last forever is the love and respect for the school song. The school song is the one thing that we sing to end every school event even if that means the end to an assembly or sports game. The school song will always be the pride and joy of Hurricane High School and that will never change.

There are many types of jokes that people tell and each one is funny in a different way. Like knock-knock jokes will lead to something either annoying or just blatantly funny. Small jokes like, ?Why did the chicken cross the road?? can be really stupid. But out of all the jokes, dad jokes are by far the stupidest, most annoying, and funniest. In this article, there will be dad joke after dad joke, and they may make you cringe or groan. So be ready.

Dad jokes obviously are jokes made by dads; so the jokes we will hear are, of course, from a dad. His name is Brent Bawden, and his jokes are usually short and very annoying or they are a really long story that will either leave you very confused or laughing. Here are some of his stupidest jokes:

Why did the chicken cross the road?

A: To get to the idiot?s house.

(Part of first joke) knock knock?

Who?s there?

A: The chicken

Why do elephants paint their toenails red?

A: to hide in a cherry tree. Have you ever seen an

Hey Boo!Hey Boo!

I am having a hard time trying to balance out my school life and my social life. How can I keep up with my grades AND make time to hang out with friends and family?

Sincerely, St ruggling St udent

St ruggling St udent ,

Trust me, we have all been there before. Everyone knows that homework

can get in the way of the things we enjoy outside of school. However, if you

follow these simple steps your issue can be solved!

1. Keep an updated schedule of everything you need to get done.

2. Do NOT procrastinate.

3. Avoid distractions (such as your phone.)

4. Set small, specific goals.

5. Accept that you won?t be able to socialize every day.

6. Spend time with supportive friends and family.

Hey Boo!

What is the worst thing about High School?

Sincerely, Wonder ing St udent

Wonder ing St udent ,

The worst thing about high school is different for everyone. For some people,

it is the homework itself. For others, it can be socializing. Honestly, it can even

just be waking up early every morning. Individuals may not like high school,

but it sure does fly by quickly. When you?re older, there will be some days

where you?ll miss being a student and when life was more simple. Clearly, this

is why it?s important to just make the most out of high school and enjoy where

you are at this very moment.
