HEALTHY NEW YEAR!!!

Pastor Larry Writes….
The coming of a new calendar year
means many things for a local church. Our
budget year is the calendar year, so we will
close out 2016 and start a new ministry
spending plan. We do not yet have the books closed on 2016, but indications are
we had a strong year. We did not “make
budget” but we were able to pay all our apportionments and have no outstanding
bills to carry forward into the new year.
Our 2017 budget calls for an increase
of spending of about 1% over 2016. Given
our needs and dreams for ministry, this is a pretty amazing piece of planning. Kudos
to the Finance Committee, under the leadership of Mike Lumpkin. If you would
like a copy of the 2017 budget, please contact Jim Bock in the church office.
What lies ahead for us? We
anticipate welcoming a new Children’s
Coordinator sometime soon, providing needed support to a vital ministry area
(and some relief to amazing volunteers, including Jennifer Rogers and Hannah
Nguyen).
The Missions team is looking at, in addition
to the short term disaster recovery teams
we are currently sending down east, a
week long domestic missions team. And
we hope to be able to assist with resettling
a refugee family as well.
A Health and Wellness Team is
coming together to offer ways to be
healthier in the new year, under the
umbrella of a Congregational Care Team that is being reformed and renewed. New
small groups will be formed in the winter,
spring and summer, providing laboratories for growth in spirituality and discipleship.
Deep and necessary and perhaps
difficult conversations will be fostered among us in 2017. Our worship styles,
times, preferences and needs will be carefully considered. In addition, our
bishop has asked us to hold a series of prayerful conversations about inclusivity
and the kind of communities local churches
are called to be.
I’m excited and hopeful for the new ministry year at Mt. Sylvan, and grateful
for your generosity and faithfulness. May God bless and keep you and yours in 2017!
Peace,
Pastor Larry

having fellowship for our youth each
Sunday before our meetings. Please peruse over the list of available of dates,
