Philosophically, the Jabberjay started out as merely a concept fueled by the never-ending thirst for excellence as well as camarade-rie. But through the collaborative efforts of the Victors, Head Victors and Gamemakers, it has blossomed into ex-istence.

The Jabberjay is a project of Hunger Games Philippines that is essentially an online magazine. The first issue of the Jabberjay contains the very best articles for the most dedicated tributes. It took weeks of preparation, editing and polishing. And at last, we see its fruits. This is anoth-er prime example of quality service to the fans from the fans and by the fans. Lookingatthemovieasawhole,it’snotnearlyasgoodasthebook.Butit’sthelittledetailsthatmakesitperfect.HowKatnisshatesPrim’scat,howGalecallsherCatnipandHaymitchcallshersweetheart,Katniss’angerathermother,thehighvoltagefenceofDistrict12,thewayEffielooked..it’stinydetailslikethat,thatdoesn’tseemsoimportantandIalmostforgot,thatmakesthemoviespoton.Cinematography?Awesome.Fashion?Mygoodness,handsdowntothestylistsofthatmovie.OfallthebooksturnedmoviesthatIwatched,thisonebyfarhasthemostobedientstorytobook. One of the things I noticed wasthatas I let thehappeningsaroundthearenaunfoldbeforemyeyes,itseemedtooviolent.WhileIwasreadingthebook,they were still killing each other merci-lessly,butitdidn’tseemviolentatall.Ohwell,Ididn’tmindanyway.Secondwouldbethatthemovieseemedsooooocen-teredonKatniss. I know itwasherper-spectiveinthebookbutitseemedthatshewasthemostimportantcharacterinthemovie.Which is somethingnot true.That’s what I like about the Trilogy, thepersonalities of each of the charactersis souniqueandso important that theyplaysuchvitalrolesinthestory. It exceeded my expectation. Ihave low expectation for books turnedintomovies ever since Twilight and theNicholasSparksstories.Ifeltliketheywereadownfall.ButwithHungerGames,it’sawholedifferentstories.Thecast,forme,wasperfect.Thebuildupoftheemotionsin themoviewasgreat thatduring thecountdown in thearena,myheartwasthumpingsohardandIwasreallystress-ingoutonwhat’sabouttohappennexteventhoughIknowwhat’ssupposedtohappen next. One more thing though,Catowas somuchgood looking in themovie than inmymind theater. Suchawastethathedied.HAHA! I have only one advice,whetheryoulikedthestoryornot,goreadbook.Someofmyfriendsaretellingmethattheydidnotgetthebeginningandtheending,usreaderscanexplainitbutyouwillneverreallyfullyunderstanditofyouhaven’treadit. The movie adaptation of The Hunger GamespremieredalmostaweekagohereinthePhilippines,tomuchfanfareandhype.IwasabletoviewitduringtheadvancescreeningofthefilmlastWednesdayatMallofAsiatogetherwithmyfriendsfromHunger.(Ashout-outtoourfriendsatAstroplus!Thankyoufortheseats!)Fast-forwardtotoday,themoviehasalreadyrakedin$1.71million locally, thehighestamong theAsianna-tions.ItgoestoshowthatwhenFilipinosfanaticize,theyfanaticizehard.Sohard itwouldbeChristmas for thedistributorandthecinemahouses.

ItwaswithoutadoubtthatTheHungerGameswouldbebreakingallsortsofbox-officerecords,anditdidtonoone’ssurprise.Butthequestionthatlingeredineveryoneelse’smindwasthatifitcouldliveuptoeve-ryone’sexpectations.Can itbeasgoodas thebook,evenbetter?Let’sbreakitdown,fromanunbiasedfan’sperspectiveandaself-confessedmoviejunkie.

For those living under a rock for the past fouryearsorso,TheHungerGamesissetinadystopianso-cietywherethebrutishandtotalitarianCapitolselectsaboyandgirl fromthetwelvedistricts to fight to thedeathonlivetelevision.Inthefar-flungcoal-miningdis-trict, Katniss Everdeen (portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to take her younger sister’splacewhounfortunatelygotreapedinherfirsttimeofeligibility.Talkabouthavingtheoddsnotinherfavor.Alleyesareonhernow,asshe’souttosurviveinsidethearenafullofboobytrapsandwhatnot’sandprovethat’sshe’snomeaslykidfromanunderprivilegedpartofPanem.Andifitthesituationcallsforhertokilltherestofthebloodthirstytributes,youbetshewon’tgodownwithout

Whileyouwerereadingtheprevi-ousparagraph,youmighthaveuttered,“Gore? Violence? Sounds Battle Royaletome! Rip-off!” Yeah, youandagazil-lionmoreouttherehaveutteredtheex-act same thing. Let me set the recordstraight: TheHungerGames is no BattleRoyale, and that comes from someonewhohasseenBR1and28yearsago.TheYes, she volunteered to partake in a death match.

Take the cult personality of the totalitarian government of Or-

well’s 1984, plus the rebellion of the fed-up citizens.

Add the brainwashing and con-trol of Fahrenheit 451.

Sprinkle a dash of the “survival” plot of The Running Man while being “hunted”. Host also an

added bonus, ala Caesar Flickerman.The quest for freedom and independence of one that would inspire others, and the defiance to the controlling hands of the “government” ala Rollerball.

And the “luck” of being chosen to die ala The Lottery.

The complex orchestration of everything by a man, ala The Truman Show.

onlythingthattheyhaveincommonisthattheybothhavepeoplekillingeachotherinsideacon-tainedarea.Brutalityandviolenceareanaddedbonus.TheHungerGamesresembles1984byGeorgeOrwellthananyotherwork,beitafilmoraliterarywork.Butlet’sputitthisway.Here’savisualrepresentationofTheHungerGamesinaliteraryandfilmequation:

Now that the issuehasbeen settled, let’s fo-cusonthemovie.SoonceagainIbringuptheques-tion: was this adaptationan honest-to-god accu-rate visual representationof the book? A resound-ingYES.Thiswhatyougetwhen you let the author(Suzanne Collins) co-writethescreenplaywiththedi-rector(GaryRoss):notonlydid she get to insert theoriginal perspective shehad inmind,but thedirectorgot to inject hisownvisionaswellthatleadtoaratherharmoni-ousinterplayofideas.Itwasanamicabledealforbothparties,anditwasadealthatpaidoffwell.

Somemightargue that somescenes---MadgeUnderseeoriginallygivingKatnissherpin,oranobvioushatredonHaymitchthementorbyKatnissandPeetaMellarkthemaletributeatthebeginningoftheirpartnerships--shouldhavebeen leftas it is. Iwouldhavetopartlyagreewith them, but somealterations haven’t evenaffectedthetotalityofthefilm.ItmightnotbeMadgewhogaveKatniss herMockingjaypin,butat least itwassomeonefromherowndis-trict.Thepindoesn’tsignifyanythingimportantYETinthispart.Sofornow,thepinstandsasatokenfromhome:thatwherevershegoes,sherepresentsDistrict12andshehastodoevery-thing to survive and emerge as a victor. Andbesides,dowereallyneedtoputeverysingledetailupthere?Tootime-consuming.

Many have complained aboutthe documentary-esque, even war-likecameraworkduringthefirstfewminutesofthefilm,aspointedoutbycriticssuchasCliftandDenbywhosaidandIquote,

Even when two people are justtalking calmly, Ross jerks the cameraaround.Why?Asthesenseofdangerin-creases,hehasnothingtobuildtoward.

Trueenough,itwasshakyandjerky.Andwhenyourcameragetsshakyandjerky, imminent danger is within range.And then, danger indeed knocked onKatnissEverdeen’sdoorstep.ThisiswhereGary Ross faltered a bit: therewas toomuch build-up towards the games it-self.Hemighthavestartedthebuild-upquite prematurely, and it did not playoffhowIexpectedittobe.Towardsthegames therewere several other scenesthat hampered this build-up, and rath-er contributing to the over-all intensitythe scenes dampened themood. Thenthere’sthisPG13ratingthathinderedhimfromgoing spectacularly violenton thegames.NotreallythekindofBANGIex-pectedittobe.

Butifthere’sonethingtocommendaboutRoss’directorialtechnique,itwashowthetrack-er-jackerhallucinationscenewascraftedandplayedout.AndIcannotemphasizehowbeautifulitwas.Fearanduncertaintywereveryevident inKatnisswhocannotdistinguish reality fromherhallucinations.Itwashappeningtoherallatthesametime(beinghauntedbyherfather’sdeath,toherlifeandhousecrumblingdown,andthenbacktoPeetatellingherruntosafety),anditwasascenethatcouldhavegoneawfullywrongifitwasn’tfortheguidanceofRoss.

Butofcourseitwouldn’tbeasperfectifitweren’tforthebrilliantperformancebyJenniferLawrence.OkayI’lladmitit:Iwasn’texactlythebiggestfanofJLawwhenshewascastasKatniss.AllhellbrokeloosewhenIfoundoutitwasher. Istandcorrectednow,andIcouldn’tevenseeanyotheractressgivingdepthandbrilliancetoKatniss’characterlikewhatLawrencehasalreadygivenher.Itwasacriticaldecision,tocasttherightactresstoplayKatnissEverdeen.CastingPeetaMellark(portrayedbyJoshHutcherson)wasalsoacriticaldecision.Thestorywouldbasicallyrevolvearoundthemforthenextthreemovies,andIthinkthere’sanon-screenchemistrybetweenthetwothatcouldmeanwellforthefilms.Bytheway,ifyou’rewonderingwhytheromanticchemistrywasn’tevident inthisadaptation, it’sbecausethere’snone.Pleasedorecall thatKatnisswasn’treallythatintoPeetayetatthispart,andIthinkJLawdidwellinportrayingthe“not-so-attached-to-Peeta”part.

Joining the first Philippine Hunger Games, what was your experience? Maureen:Blood. Ryel:Itwasfunandreallychallenging!

So after this game, are you still interested in joining other competitions prepared by Hunger Games Philip-pines? Ryel:Yes,Iamwillingbutitwilldependonmyschedule.

When you first saw the arena, did it meet your expec-tations? Joey:Iexpectedalittlesomethinglikethis.Iactually thought that it’dbe likepaintballorthat type of thingbecausewewere asked towearwhite.It’ssimilarbecause[weusedwaterguns] and signs of you being deadwould bestainsonyourshirt. Aessiel:Samewithhimbecauseatfirst, Ithinkthisplaceisanairsoftplace...[Although]Ididn’thaveanyideaaboutthe[twotargetar-eas].

Did you prepare for the games and did you enjoy it? Joey:TheonlypreparationthatIhadwasIhadtogetthisshirtbecauseI’mnotthewhiteshirt type of guy. (laughs) Andof coursemen-tallypreparingmyself,eventhoughI’mtheold-esttributehere,apparently,agedoesn’tmatter.Well,evidently,Ididn’twin.


How did you feel when you were ‘killed’? Aessiel:Well,therewasatimethatIgotdoubleteamed,andthenItoldmyselfthatI’mtiredsotheycouldkillme.Ikeptonrunningbutthen again, I remembered that it was for theMockingjay pin but still, [I think I didn’t haveany]chancebecausethey[had]raincoats. Joey:Wellformyself,theywereganginguponme,likeIhadtwoorthreefolkswhowereonmeandIhadnochoice,twoofthem[were]wearing raincoats and I [wasn’t] notwearinganyso Ihadnochoice.[Itwas]threeagainstone.

Did you think it’s a fair game overall? Joey: In my opinion, it is indeed a fairgame. It’s very similar to the actual HungerGames - the age range, the cultural back-groundoftheFilipinos,soit’sfunoverall

So as the tribute for District 10, did you prepare for the games mentally or physically? Charlie:I’mkindabusyatwork,soiapol-ogizeIdidnotpreparemuch.

Did you expect anything from the game or thought of what the games would be like? And did it exceed your expectations? Charlie:Ikindaobservedthearenafroman outside perspective and I did not expectthis!ItactuallyremindedmeofSanJuan,wheretheyhaveafeastwhereeverybodythrowswa-ter.

Did you enjoy the games? Charlie:IenjoyediteventhoughIdidnotwin theMockingjay pin. Although, I wish I didbecauseIwantedittobemybirthfdaygift[formyself].

In the future, if there would be another event like this, will you join again? Charlie:OfcoureIwill.Afterall,everybodydeservesasecondchance.

What was your initial feeling when you first came into the arena with all the other tributes? A:Oh…I’vebeenpalpitatingallday!I’mreally,reallynervous.AndIhaven’teatenlunchyetbecauseI’mreally,reallynervousandI’mex-citedforthegames. When you saw the other tributes, like in the arena, did you pinpoint already who was your enemy? Thelightfromthesunthatishidingbeneaththewintercloudsareslowlydiminishingaskatnisswalksthroughtheforestalone.Galeishitbyafever,forhestayeduptotheweehoursofnighttocatchgame.Heevenhadsethisbestsanres,buthedidnotcatchanything.Heendedupfatigued,hisgamebagasemptyashisstomach,andhehadnothingtoserveatthetableforaChristmasEvedinner.Thefollowingday,Galewoke-upwithahighfever,thusforcingKatnisstohuntalone.Katniss’familyhasnoteatenanythingindays.Theonlythingthatkeepsthemaliveiswater.SnowcollectedbyPrim,thenmeltedonthefireplace.Hermotherisalmostnon-existent.Shejust looksoutsidethewindow,notspeakingawordtoher,norPrim.Buttercupisnowheretobefound.HemaybescavengingDistrictTwelveforfood,butatthisharshweathercondition,stayingoutsidewouldbesuicide. Katnissheadsforthenever-electrocutedfencewithhergamebagfilledwithnothingbutfrozengreens,andberries.ShereachesherhomeattheSeam.Sheturnstheknobofthetermite-infestedwoodendoor,asshepushesitforwardwithlittleeffort.TheambianceoftheirhomegreetsKatnissawarmwelcome,asitmadebeadsofsweatfallfromherforehead.Shedoesnotwipeit.AsKatnissenters,shenoticesthathermotherisstillstarringoutofthewindowbythedinnertable,whilesittingonawoodenchair.Notasoundisheard,exceptfortheflickeringembersthatcame


fromthebrickedfurnacethatsuppliesthelife-givingwarmthintheirhome. “Dearsister,it’ssocold,canyouhugmeawhile? Iknowyou’vehuntedmorethanaradiusofamile. Ithasbeenmeandmother,alonealldaylong. MerryChristmas,mysister,istheresomethingwrong?”saysPrim. Katnissdidnotspeak.Shejustgoesstraighttothekitchenwithhergamebag,ignoringPrim’sgreeting. “IhavesomeNightlockberriesIfoundinthewoods. There’snothingmorebetter,evenabundleofgoods. ItwillendourmiseryasImakethissauce, Twistandturn,addsomesugar,death,ourliveswillcross!”Katnisssayswhilemixingthein-gredientstogether. Thestrongscentoftheberriessurroundsthehousetheycalltheirhome,evenifitisn’tmuchofahometobeginwith. ThearomainvitesPrim’sstomachtogrumble.ShebelieveswhatKatnissispreparingwillbeatreatfortheirfamily,sincetheyhavenoteatenanythingindays. Thefreshly-boliedsnow,orastheywouldliketocallit,boilingwater,isalreadyplacedonthekitchencounter.Katnissdropsthefrozenvegetablesshefoundwiththeberries,asanefforttothawitout.Shethenpullsoutalargebowl,andplacesthegreenspresentably.KatnissgrabsthebowlthatcontainsthesaucemadeofNightlockberriesandshepoursitalloverthegreens.Shetossesitwithawoodenspoonandsetsitaside. “Voila!HereInowpresentmyfineChristmasdish! I’msurethey’llenjoy,it’smuchdeliciousthanfish. Goodbyeandgoodriddance;hunger,thirst,painandPanem! ButLand,comeandwatchussingourfinalanthem!”shesaystoherself,grabbingthesaladbowl. Katnisscallsfordinner.Asshebringstheirowndemisetowardtheirtable,shenoticesthathermotherandPrim,whoisexcitedforthefood,arealreadyseated.Sheplacesthebowlatthecenterofthetable,thenshegrabsachairandsitsherself. “Digin,Isaynow,there’smoreforthethreeofus, Thisdishpresentsatickettothefreedombus. Eatnowwhileit’sfresh,asaladofforestberry. Thiseveningwillbefun,indeedverymerry.”saysKatnissassheseestheshadowofflickeringflamesinPrim’stearyeyeswhenhersisterisabouttoeatabitefulofthesalad. “IknowitsmellsofNightlock,whymydearsister? Iseeyouhadnochoice,we’dbecameabother.”Primsays, “Ithasbeenyourdutysincethedeathoffather, Butayearfromnow,ourdeathswon’tevenmatter.”shecontinues,preparingherselfforherowndeath. JustwhenPrimisgoingtoeatherownlifeaway,Katnisshitsherhandwhichmakesherdropthesoon.Katnissgrabsallthreeplatesthentossesitintothefire. “IamtrulysorryforIhavelostit,Prim. Iamjustafraidoftheroadahead,it’sdim. Ifwewalksidebysidethroughdarknesstogether, Ofcoursewithmother,theessenceoflifewe’llconquer.”saysKatnissashersisterhugsher. KiaAlampay,anincominghighschoolfreshmanfromManda-luyong,decidedtomakeapresentforherfriendMoniqueEspirituintimefortheirgraduationlastMarch.Cramming100,000wordsonanil-lustrationboard,Kiamanagedrewriteeverywordofthe370-pageTheHungerGames,inaboutthreemonths,evenmakingitintimebeforethemoviepremiere.Doingwhat’sneverbeendonebefore,KiahassetthenewstandardforHungerGamesfanwork,andshedefinitelyraisedittoawholenewlevel.

Since when were you a Hunger Games fan? IreadthebookIthinkmorethanyearagoandMoniquewasactuallytheonewhorecommendedthebookaftershereadit.Ireadtheseriesinlessthanfivedays,thenrereadthefirstbooksixtimesandtheentireseriesthricebecauseIwassoinlovewithit.

What do you love about the trilogy? IlovehowSuzanneCollinstooksomethingsobrutalandturneditintoaworkofart.Itreallyillustratessmallpartsofourworldtoday.Theconceptisreallytragicbutwhileyouarereadingthebooks,youmakethiswholenewworldinyourhead.

What made you decide to write down the whole book? Actually, it wasmy birthday (December 14th) and I was justthinkingaboutwhyIreallylovedthebooks.That’swhenIrealizeditisaworkofart,sowhydon’tImakethatliteralandturnitintoanactualpieceofart? Iwent toNationalandboughteverything Ineeded. Iworkedonitforaweek(sinceitwasoriginallyforme)butIsoonde-cidedtogiveittoMoniquesincethisisourlastyeartogether.

Did you have any inspiration in doing this? Well,Ididn’texactlyhaveaninspirationbutthiswasreallysome-thingIwantedtodosoItoldmyselftoreallycommittothisproject;Ihadtosacrificealotintermsoftimeandschedulewhilestillhavingschoolworkbutitturnedoutwell.

How long did it take you to make it? Ittookmearound3-4monthstofinishthewholething.Iworkedon iteverynightandwhenever I had free time: IwouldusuallydoaroundthreepagesadaybutsometimesIcouldfinishawholechap-ter.

Would you do this again for someone as special as your best friend? I’llhavetothinkaboutthat,I’llprobablytryanddothenexttwobooksbecausethiswasaprettygoodexperience,andinawayitwasreally relaxing.EverytimeIworkedon it, I justgot lost intheHungerGamesworldagainandasIreaditslowlytocopythebook,Ipickedupmoredetails.


What can you say about the unexpected attention that you got out of this? Ihavea lotofpeople to thankactual-ly:Moniqueofcourse,myfamilyforbelievingIcouldfinishit,andmycousinKatriaforreachingyouguys. Itwasreallyunexpectedandhope-fullyitwillreachSuzanneherselfbutthisismorethanIcouldeveraskfor.

If you were given a chance to talk to Suzanne Collins what would you say to her? IwouldfirstofallsuggestwhomIwouldliketoplayFinnick.ThenIwouldthankherforallthisbecauseshetrulyissomeonewhochangedthecourseofbooktrends.

What are you planning to do to it? I’monthevergeofhavingitframedanddisplayed inmy roomasa reminder that Kia’sreallyatrueandbestfriendofmine.Well,sincewe’re graduating I don’t want to forget howamazingshewasduringthetimewespentsee-ingeachothereveryday.

What made you decide to make an online campaign to get this work of art to be seen by Suzanne Collins herself? I’veseenalot(andImeanALOT)ofHun-gerGamesfanworkonthenetandsomehaveevengottentoSuzanneherself.Kia’swork(inmyopinion,hehe)beatsthoseanyday.Itwasamaz-ing.Peopledon’tnormally spendthreemonthsworkingonafanartwork,letaloneagraduationgift.Iagreewithyouguyswhenyousaidthatshesetthe“fanbar”toawholenewlevel.Plus,shereallydeservesalltheattentionforwhatshedid.(Hopefully,SuzanneCollins’attentionaswell)
