Extreme Poverty and Hunger …and what can I do to end it.
Extreme Poverty and Hunger
…and what can I do to end it.
What is the problem?
World hunger affects a large percentage of the worlds population.
But hunger stems from poverty and
lacking the means to meet even the most
basic of human needs.
How bad is the problem?
3 billion people live on less than $2.50 a day with more than 1.2 billion living below the
extreme poverty line on less than $1.25 a day
The poor spend 60-80% of their income on food in developing countries leaving little for
healthcare and education.
795 million people worldwide do not have enough food to live a healthy lifestyle. That’s
about 1 in 9.
Why does it resonate with me?
This particular issue resonates with me because I believe that solving poverty and hunger will address the the basic needs in
order for developing countries to progress.
Once these basic needs are met, being well nourished and financially secure will provide
the foundation to support other social and economical development.
How can this be applied locally?
While hunger and poverty are significant issues worldwide, there are still people in the United
States that struggle with both of these.
Organizations like feedingamerica.org and endhunger.org focus on hunger within the
United States.
Where can I make the greatest contribution?
As a business management major, I will have the responsibility of determining the focus and direction of businesses.
The greatest impact I can have is by making companies and business leaders aware of these issues and how they can implement business practices to change them.
How can social media help reach these goals?
Social media is an extremely powerful tool that can be used in the fight against poverty and
hunger.
One of the most impactful ways this can happen is when people find out more
information through following social media like Facebook pages and Twitter feeds.
They can also give through these organizations websites as well as micro-funding websites such as gofundme.com
