Mongols: Impact on History

• Who are they?– Ethnic group located in Mongolia, China, and Russia– Speak Mongolic language (Kalmyks of Eastern

Europe)– Named “Mongol” since the 8th century during the

Chinese Tang dynasty– Resurfaced in the 11th century during the rule of the

Khitan– In 13th century, had a deep relationship with Nature

Genghis Khan• Born in ~1162• Become a leader of the Mongolia tribe

in 1206• Genghis Khan means “Universal Ruler”• Mongolia was unified by Genghis Khan,

the founder of the Mongol nation• Success in warfare• Improved military organization and

political bureaucracy• Created a body of law • Regulated hunting and improved the

availability of meat for everyone.• Introduced record keeping, created

official seals, created a supreme officer of the law

Genghis Khan & the Great Mongol Empire

• Illiterate• Religiously shamanistic. No more than

700,000 in number. • Lived in portable felt dwellings • Grazed animals, fought over turf, occasionally

raided.• Did not collect heads or scalps as trophies

Mongolian History

• Conquered Central Asia in 1220• Defeated all northern China by 1226 and

laid the foundation of the Mongol Empire• Extended from Asia to Korea to Hungary

down to Indus• Defeated armies as China, North and South

Korea, Myanmar, Russia, northern India, eastern Germany, etc.

• Tolerated all religions • Helped many art forms including Chinese

schools of art and miniature in Persia

Conquest into Northern China • Attacked the rulers of farmers

in northwester china • Attacked by Chinese from south

of Yangzi River.• After 6 years of fighting,

Genghis Khan returned back to Mongolia.

• Most Mongols who went back were engineers, captive musicians, translators, and doctors. The goods that were loaded on wagons were silk, cushions, blankets, robes, rugs, armor, perfumes, jewelry, honey, medicine, silver, gold, bronze, etc.

Into Afghanistan and Persia • Genghis Khan wanted to trade and goods

for his nation• Mongol caravan with merchants went to

Persia and Central Asia. The sultans claimed that they were spies

• The Mongols were killed and others were sent back to Genghis Khan

• Genghis Khan sent his army westward and people in Bukhara opened the city gates to the Mongols and they surrendered.

• Army went more deep into the sultan empire into Afghanistan and Persia

• Mongols did not torture, but the European rulers did torture them.

• The Mongols were revolted against and Genghis daughter was killed, and it is said that she asked that everyone in the city be put to death, and according to the story, they all were.

Modern Mongols • Mongol origin live in Mongolia,

China (Inner Mongolia), Russia, and a few other central Asia countries

• Total population: ~9 million• Languages: Mongolic language,

English, Chinese, Russian, Korean

• Religion: Buddhism and Shamanism. Minorities are Christianity, and Islam

Bantu: Impact on HistoryWho are they?•Make up 2/3 of Africa’s population•Inhabit the southern and eastern part of the continent •There are the Southern, Central, & Eastern groups of the Bantu•Languages were unwritten until Europeans arrived •Interested in translating the Bible when the first European missionaries were in contact with the Bantus

Migration• Migrated from Congo or Niger Delta Basin Zambia area • Originated in southeastern Nigeria and spread over Africa • Largest migrations in human history• Began in 1000 AD till 1800 AD• Introduced crops and iron smelting and iron tools to the new

areas they migrated to

• Reasons for migration: – Overpopulation encouraged groups to move away to practice

agriculture– Searched for fertile land – Had internal conflicts or external attacks from neighbors

Modern Bantu • Are known more as a language group than as a distinct ethnic group• Swahili is the widely spoken Bantu language • 50 million people living in the countries along the east cost of Africa• Live in regions that continue southward Africa where it is believed they

migrated from• Modern Bantu-speaking peoples of Africa are mostly Muslims• Lead a variety of different lifeway's from traditional farmers to city folks.

The movement of European's to the Pacific and Australia

• The two centuries of discrimination and expropriated followed and at one point the indigenous population fell to 60,000

• The British founded the first European settlement in 1788

• They named it Sydney• Composed of six separate colonies of the British Empire• Australia’s path to independent

statehood began in 1091, and was complete by WWII

Aboriginal Migration•There are many unanswered questions about the Aboriginals existence and why they migrated to Australia

•15,000 years ago the Ice Age of the Pleistocene Era came to an end.

•Huge amounts of frozen seawater to melt

•Rising of sea level cause the coastal areas to submerge

•Aboriginals were forced to move inland and adapt to the environmental changes

Modern Australia • Found with the influx of European settlers over 200

years ago • 90% of population are European decent • <3% descended from the indigenous Aboriginal

population and Aborigines are still discriminated against in some places

• Plays a big regional role, b/w New Guinea and Solomon Islands

• Migration continues to shape Australia • Has an abundance of unique plant and animal life
