Evaluating Persuasive Speeches

• Is the subject worthwhile?• Is the general purpose of the speech to

persuade?• Is the topic narrow enough to be covered

in some depth?• Is the specific purpose clear to the audience?• Is the thesis clear and limited to one idea?• Has speaker considered/adapted to audience?• Has speaker adequately researched - does he/she seem to

understand the topic?• Does speech have 3 main points – are they clearly related to

thesis?• Is each main point properly supported?

Evaluating Persuasive Speeches• Is the organizational pattern clear/

appropriate to type of speech?• Does the introduction gain the audience’s

attention and provide clear preview of what

speech is about?• Are there adequate transitions?• Does the conclusion effectively summarize and close the speech? Is it clear

what speaker is asking of audience?• Is the language clear, vivid, appropriate level of formality, personal and

powerful?• Are sentences short, direct, active, on topic?• Does speaker maintain eye contact with audience?• Are volume, rate and pauses appropriate?• Are gestures – eye, face, hand movements, body movements appropriate to

speech/audience?

• Constructive criticism helps you to learn

the principles of public speaking• Despite all the benefits, many people resist• Tips for giving criticism:

• Say something positive• Be specific• Be culturally sensitive• Limit criticism• Be constructive• Focus criticism on behavior, tangibles not what you infer from speaker –ie

interest
