Principles of GeneticsPrinciples of Genetics Traits controlled by recessive alleles Traits controlled by recessive alleles

appear to be masked, or covered up when appear to be masked, or covered up when a dominant allele is present, traits a dominant allele is present, traits controlled by dominant alleles always controlled by dominant alleles always show up when an organism is presentshow up when an organism is present

If a trait is controlled by co-dominant If a trait is controlled by co-dominant alleles, or alleles that are neither dominant alleles, or alleles that are neither dominant nor recessive, it will result in neither of the nor recessive, it will result in neither of the offspring’s alleles being maskedoffspring’s alleles being masked

The offspring inherits a combination of two The offspring inherits a combination of two alleles from it’s parents, the individual alleles from it’s parents, the individual alleles control the inheritance of traits, alleles control the inheritance of traits, some dominant, some recessive alleles. some dominant, some recessive alleles.

Human Genome ProjectThe Human Genome project began in 1990Scientists were hoping to identify all genes

and determine the sequence of the 3 billion chemical base pairs in Human DNA

There are some fairness issues in knowing genetic information, the legal issue is the privacy and confidentiality about knowing the genetic information

The human genome project changed laws. Some examples are that now health insurers may not require individuals to provide their genetic information.

The three genetic disorders are single gene disorder, which is the result of one mutated gene, chromosome abnormalities, which usually come from an error during cell division, and multifactorial disorder, which is caused by a combination of environmental factors and mutations in multiple genes.

Genetic counseling can help predict parents future children because it can tell them possible disorders that their children may have.

A karyotype is the number and appearance of chromosomes. By looking at one’s karyotype, you can tell if they have a genetic disorder. You can tell if one has a genetic disorder if they have an error in cell division, or an abnormal appearance or amount of chromosomes.

Argument I

According to Doctor David J. Yount, “[Cloning] does not respect nature,”

Cloning is not the natural way to increase the population

If we can clone then we can genetically modify the species which is not the heredity course of nature

Clones have a higher chance of developing mutations, health problems, or pre-mature deaths

Page 7: Human cloning

According to Mesa Community College, human cloning does not ensure diversity and ecosystem survival

The process of cloning is a break to the natural process of evolution, which is known to strengthen our species and improve our survival instincts

Page 8: Human cloning

According to Doctor Nigel M. S. Cameron, cloning is a cruel and unsafe experiment

The first cloned organism which was a sheep took over 200 tries

More than 98% of clones are either deformed, or die immediately after birth

They might look normal but some clones have congenital defects such as premature aging

Some clones suffer from large baby syndrome

ARGUMENT IV

According to Mesa Community College, human cloning kills embryos

During the process of human cloning, many embryos are taken and tested for their viability

If some embryos have failed, it’s almost as if someone has had some of their living cells murdered

Page 10: Human cloning

The three most important facts are:1. Cloning is not the natural way to reproduce and it can change the

balance of nature2. Cloning is cruel and an unsafe experiment3. The experiment kills embryos

There are a few interesting things we learned, such as cloning isn’t as cool as it sounds, it “murders” your own embryos. We also learned that cloning is just a long case of trial and error of genetic engineering, for example the cloned sheep Dolly took over 200 tries

Reproductive cloning can alter the line of pedigrees We are against cloning
