Since 1958, the HOBY alumni have grown to more than 375,000. This vast and talented network will serve as an invaluable resource for your student for years to come.

If you register your student by November 30, 2012, acceptance into the HOBY Leadership Seminar is guaranteed. All registrations submitted after this date will be accepted on a space available basis. 3 Easy Steps for Selecting Your HOBY Ambassador1. PROMOTE THE PROGRAMDisplay the enclosed poster in a prominent place. Encourage all teachers affiliated with the sophomore class to mention the program in their classes. Make an announcement to the student body. Encourage all 10th graders to learn more about HOBY by visiting www.hoby.org.

2. ENCOURAGE ALL 10TH GRADERS TO APPLYRefer all interested candidates to a specific school counselor. Have the counselor create a selection process. Some suggestions include face-to-face interviews about the student’s desire to represent the school, an essay contest about leadership (suggested topic: “In 100 words or less, please describe the most rewarding and challenging aspect of being a leader in your school and community”), or other creative ideas!

3. SELECT YOUR HOBY AMBASSADORLeadership ability surpasses race, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status, so all sophomores should be considered in selecting your HOBY Ambassador. Also, while young leaders often have excellent academic records, selection shouldn’t be based exclusively on students with the best grades. Narrow your search to one or two students with demonstrated or potential leadership ability, exhibiting one or more of the following traits:

• Outstanding oral and/or written communication skills• Critical and/or creative thinking• Creative problem solving • Strong decision-making skills• Sensitivity to the needs or concerns of others

• Charismatic personality (others gravitate towards him or her)• Courage to speak out for one’s beliefs• Courage to challenge authority• Participation and/or interest in community service activities

Ensure the registration worksheet is complete with a valid email address for the Ambassador(s). Confirmation and information about the seminars will be sent through email, and students without valid email addresses will miss out.

Once you have submitted all the information online, there is no need to fax a copy of the worksheet. No paper registrations (faxed, emailed or mailed) will be accepted.

3. MAKE A PAYMENTYou may pay online with a credit card, print an invoice to pay with a check, or indicate a Purchase Order number and print an associated invoice for payment. Parent Testimonials

“My son came home full of information and energy. He loved being with people as bright as himself. He was amazed at how everyone was of different ethnicities and religions and could still share opinions and be heard and respected even in disagreement. He wants to go to college with kids just like these! He talked of signing up to return next June…. I hope he does. Thanks again for all your hours and hours of work. It certainly made a difference for him!”Parent of a 2006 HOBY alumnus from California.

“My daughter is a great student and a wonderful person. Yet, I am amazed at how the HOBY conference perked her up and helped her refocus her priorities. As a parent I had thought it would be a good experience for her, but I really had no idea of its impact. She said it was the best four days of her life. And that’s quite a statement because she has already experienced many great things. Of course she already wants to come back next year…as I’m sure many others do. We do everything we can to support her college preparation and I’m so glad we were able to send her to HOBY. I think it gave her exactly what she needed on so many different levels.”Parent of a 2005 HOBY Ambassador from Indiana.
