Candidate=Angelo), the High Falls Café ride was rained out. Our October REDS RIDE was on the 19th (the last for this year) & the last HV H-D Bike Night for the season was October 24th. HV-HD’s Saddle-Up Saturday, a ride for Breast Cancer Awareness on October 13th was rained out. Some of us heading to State College, PA for Columbus Day weekend, led by RC John H. Although we had cloudy times, the ride was fabulous with great roads & tourist attractions. Many, many thanks for John H. for leading the ride. Thanks to our Ladies of Harley, we had our first HARLEY-WEEN Costume party. It was well attended and our members shown with their wonderful costumes. Continuing the Halloween spirit we led off the Nyack Halloween Parade on October 28th. We were small in numbers but made up for that in spirit. Reminder: “Polar HOG” begins on November 4th. Our ride KSU moves to 10:00 AM on this date. Daylight Savings Time also ends this weekend (move clocks BACK). We will be doing a DELI Ride on 11/4 but this year to Kosher Nosh Deli, Glen Rock, NJ led by Bobby B. Usually Polar HOG rides are Show & Go but we will have Road Captain Candidate rides the first three weeks of November. November begins our annual TOYS FOR TOTS Drive. We will be placing T4Ts boxes throughout the county. Dates & details to follow soon. MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Our Annual Hudson Valley HOG Holiday Party will be on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at the Knights of Columbus, Erie Street, Blauvelt. Safety Tips HV HOG Safety Tip: November 2018

POLAR H.O.G. IS UPON US

Oh, well! Here it is again, for your riding pleasure: Polar H.O.G., the winter riding season, is in effect once more, until March 31st. We all know what that means…cold weather safety precautions and procedures are in effect. Black ice, sometimes called clear ice, is a thin coating of glaze ice on a surface, especially on roads. The ice itself is not black, but visually transparent, allowing the road surface below to be seen through it. The typically lack of noticeable ice pellets, snow, or sleet surrounding black ice means that areas of the ice are often practically invisible to riders. There is, thus, a risk of skidding and subsequent accident due to the unexpected loss of traction. To remain safe when riding, stay alert for shiny, wet-appearing road surfaces. These are prevalent in shaded areas, like South Mountain Road in New City, and at points where there is evidence of water collecting, or even low-lying dry areas along the side of the road where water is prone to collect. Keep in mind that elevated roadway and bridge surfaces freeze before ground road surfaces. Ice formation depends on the temperature of the road surface, hence, drizzle and fog can form ice even though the ambient air temperature is above freezing. Remember, black ice may be invisible, especially in low light conditions. When riding in conditions favorable to the formation of black ice, ride slowly and maintain exaggerated spacing between riders to permit reaction time and space in the event a forward rider slides or goes down. Reaction time is reduced in cold weather due to body rigidity in comparison to warm weather looseness, especially of the hands and feet. Electric, heated gear is helpful but is not a total solution. Heated gear is bulky and inhibits free movement, rapid and total response. Winter gloves, both heated and non-heated, are bulky and reduce sensation dramatically. The rider’s fingers might not readily “find” the brake and clutch levers when encased in bulky gloves and padded finger tubes. It is quite possible that winter hand gear can get temporarily caught beneath the hand grips on their journey to the levers. The same can be said for foot reaction time and accuracy. Heated handgrips are a wonderful addition to your motorcycle. Further, for those who are brave of heart and ride without heated gear, cold hands and feet experience a loss of tactile sensitivity, meaning the rider loses connectivity in terms of touch sensation and identification of the location of the fingers and/or feet, known as proprioception. This can occur in cool weather, not just in cold weather. One person’s “cool” is another person’s “cold”. Further, there are many causes for reduced, warming, blood circulation to the extremities, the least of which is a condition known as chronologic maturation, or aging, and related medical conditions. Finally, protect your face, ears and core from the winter wind. Wear thermal undergarments, ear protection, face masking and neck muffling. Protect the top of your head, beneath your helmet, to minimize avoidable heat loss, especially when your helmet is removed. A full-face or modular helmet provides protection in so many ways, especially from cold winter winds. Tom Pflomm, HV HOG Safety Officer
