This talk focuses on SfM because it is less expensive and highly portable. Favorable conditions for SfM can yield very dense point clouds with resolution down to a cm or less. Visualization of unscaled and unoriented models are quite helpful for qualitative assessments, especially for otherwise inaccessible outcrops. Adding scale and geographic alignment to a model greatly enhances its quantitative value, as both directionality and length as well as planar features, volumes, etc., can be extracted. Fortunately, a scale object aligned to north is a rather simple addition to a scene. Change detection and incorporation with other spatial data requires absolute referencing. For change detection, software such as CloudCompare can refine alignment of point clouds that are approximately similar and highlight local changes between the objects. Fully georeferenced objects require additional positioning systems, such as a total station and/or high resolution GPS receivers. Examples of landforms and geo objects from ~ 1 m2 to 104 m2 size will be presented, including stream channels, cutbanks, landslides, quarries and fossils. Speaker: Dr. Leslie E. I obtained my PhD in 2003 in the Dept of Geology and Geophysics, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN. My advisorwas Prof. Chris Paola, a world renowned stratigrapher who always claimed he was too far downstream to advise me wellon erosion. He did quite well! I learned how to build small scale erosion models which mimic large watersheds. Ideveloped stereophotogrammetry software to measure sandbox models, and built automated water and sediment fluxmeasurement tools. My PhD experience taught me how to measure things with the goal of rigorously testing numericalmodels. I learned about the complexity of small things, and the beauty of photography.

I have taught geology courses at University of Minnesota, University of St. Thomas, Indiana University-Northwest campus,University of Delaware, and State University of New York. Each place has taught me more than I have given, though I domy best to pass it all on to my students. My specialty remains geomorphology, field data collection and data analysis, andtraining undergraduates how to do research.

A P r i l M E E T i N GAbout the Presenter: I dropped out of college after my first year, and spent my 20s trying to figure out life. In my late 20s, I wasready to learn about life via formal education at a university, andenrolled at Riverside Community College, California, which Iattended from 1988-1991. After investigating psychology, sociology, and geography, I was born as a geologist during myfirst geology field trip to the San Andreas fault. We jumped up anddown on the fault, laughing but worried about what we mighttrigger. Earth became my focus. I was hooked, and never lookedback.

I obtained my B.S. in 1993, (Highest Honors), from theDepartment of Geological Sciences, University of California, SantaBarbara. As a transfer student, I jumped right into every aspect ofgeology I could. I probed aluminum in hornblende from volcanicrocks from Lake Tahoe. I learned how to use total stations andautolevels to survey active faults as a research assistant with ArtSylvester, slept on the fresh fault trace of a major earthquake(1992 Landers earthquake) and felt Earth move in unfathomableways during aftershocks. I learned to love Earth’s dynamism, andhow to make careful measurements of natural features usingsurveying tools.

The Hudson-Mohawk Professional Geologists Association (HMPGA) was established in 1994 toprovide an open forum to strengthen and advance the geological sciences. HMPGA fosters the openexchange of ideas and disseminates information regarding the geological sciences to the community.HMPGA is affiliated with the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) to help facilitate theexchange of information regarding professional activities on a state, regional and national level.Participants in the organization include working professionals from both the private and public sector;educators from colleges, universities, and high schools; and avid enthusiasts.

5APRIL 2017

Greetings HMPGA Members,

When the call goes out for volunteer geologists, HMPGA members are great about stepping up. This year, HMPGA volunteers will support the Howe’s Cave and Cave House Museum field trips for an expanded list of schools, compared with last year. HMPGA members will assist earth science teachers and high school students from Guilderland, Schalmont, Richfield Springs, Central Valley, and Carmel. We also have a 5th grade group from Brookings School. Many thanks are due to Paul Griggs and Joe Osso for giving their time to coordinate this growing HMPGA effort. And thanks in advance to our field trip volunteers: Alex Ahrens, Luanne Whitbeck, Ted Loukides, Jen Kotch, Mau Piel, Matt Dupee, Susan Green, Gerry Gould, Priscilla Duskin, Curt Cappellano, Paul, and Joe.

Currently there is at least one HMPGA geologist for all Howe’s Cave field trip dates and more than one volunteer for several. So, we can still put more of you to work on those dates that need a second volunteer. If you can help out on May 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, or 19th, please e-mail Joe Osso at [email protected]

Our regular monthly meetings will conclude in May, when we will hear Dr. Peter Kneupfer of Binghamton University discuss evidence for changing of flood frequencies in the Upper Susquehanna basin. The board’s attention will then turn to our summer gathering, which is yet to be planned. One possible future venue is the new Thatcher Park Center, currently under construction. We have held the event in the park years ago and some would like to return, either this summer or next.

This month’s HMPGA meeting, April 19th, at the Century House will feature the poster session format presentations of research by five geology students from Union College and RPI. Their work will be presented during the social hour and continue until our speaker presentation. April’s speaker is Dr. Les Hasbargen of SUNY College at Oneonta who will speak on Structure from Motion 3D modeling. This powerful new photogrammetric tool is applied to landform mapping and other geologic studies. Come on April 19th to learn about SfM 3D photogrammetry and to support the hard work of our local students. See you there.

Members, we hope that everyone had a happy and safe celebration for the new year. We wanted to remind you that 2017 brings new opportunities to help the community as geologists. Please keep in mind that during the spring, we will have our Howe’s Cave trips where volunteers can assist local high school field trips that visit the site. We also have a high school science fair and the gem & mineral show where we can volunteer to assist at our table. If you have any interest in volunteering, please reach out to Joe Osso!

BenitoiteFound in veins in the brecciated zone of a blue schist body associated with serpentinite.

System: Hexagonal • Appearance: Translucent to transparent with vitreous to subadamantineluster • Localities: Diablo Range, San Benito County, CA • Chemical Composition: BaTiSi3O9 •

Hardness: 6.0-6.5

First discovered in 1907 and mistaken to be sapphire. There are several small-scale deposits of Benitoite worldwide, with the only deposit capable of producing gemstone material found in the Diablo Range of San Benito County, California. The name Benitoite came from it’s location

in San Benito County.
