As a result of the rapid progress and growth covering all walks of life in the country, and in order to cope with the ever increasing demands, the Ministry of Electricity & Water constructed the first power station in 1952 and then successively set up 6 Power stations with a total installed capacity of 12579 (M.W).

Nevertheless, it is quite obvious that during the last ten years there was a downward trend towards reasonable rates – yet, by world standard still considered high compared to the industrial countries in which the annual increase in electric load does not exceed 2-3%.
Naturally the rise in electric load and consumption is a direct result of the harsh climate conditions and of the rapid economic and construction growth in all country’s sectors. In addition to the very cheap prices of electricity.

GCC Interconnection Grid Project
The project consists of three phases represent the first phase of which link each from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia , Qatar and Bahrain, which represents 80% of the total project, while the second phase is to link the electricity between the UAE and Oman, and the third stage represents the full connectivity between the six countries. And this project will provide 5000 MW of installed capacity of the GCC countries.
1- The economy in consumption to reduce the electric loads through the national project “Rationalize”.2-Interconnection of electrical systems in GCC States to serve the growing development of these countries.3- Presenting a new project for the competent to change the Tariff and the use of slides.4- Find solutions to the rationing of energy use in order to preserve oil wealth through the orientation towards the use of alternative and renewable energy in power generation of less cost.

MEW Vision
It is worth mentioning that the Ministry always aimed to utilized up-to-date plant and equipment, compatible with the local prevailing conditions to obtain the best economic results.
This is reflected in the progressive increase in the size of production units from 7.5 MW to10 MW to 30 MW to 134 MW to 150 MW and to 300 MW .As a result, operational and maintenance cost was reduced, not to mention the high efficiency and productivity that had a positive effect on unit production cost.
