Over a month has passedsince the RWM exhibition, which took place at theNEC Birmingham 13- 15September, but the feelingof excitement and optimismfor the future within thisindustry is still very muchwith me.As an exhibitor and visitor to the show I was truly amazedby the innovative creations and ideas on display, and thepotential results that could be achieved to create a moresustainable future.

This year the figures really speak for themselves, with 650+exhibitors, 13,000 visitors and over 100 speakers cametogether to make the 2011 RWM in partnership with CIWMthe biggest and best event in the UK for the recycling, waste and resource efficiency sectors.

Key speaker Sir Jonathon Porritt CBE who was speaking inthe final session at RWM believes: A sustainable world canbe achieved by 2050.

He commented: "I think it's fair to say that I amgobsmacked by this industry...there is an extraordinarypipeline of innovation."

Furthermore he went on to say: "Investors see this industryas a very important place where they can see opportunitiesover the course of the next 20 years. The figures involvedare astonishing...it is enormously exciting."

For 2012, it is expected that the show will increase its focuson all sectors of the waste hierarchy, with dedicated contentand features focussing on reducing, reusing, recycling, recovering and disposing of waste.

As part of this, it is planned that the show will include a newsocial enterprise zone for third sector organisations. For thefirst time this will give charities and social organisations aplatform alongside commercial operators in the recyclingsector.

Event director Gerry Sherwood said: "RWM's strength is itsfocus on the waste and resource industry, not in being abroader environmental show. By offering networking, knowledge and products at all levels of the waste hierarchywe can be the pre-eminent event in Europe for thisimportant sector. We're keen to focus RWM in partnershipwith CIWM on the full waste hierarchy for 2012. The newzones will help us to ensure our entire industry has a voiceat the show.

Furthermore we are keen to hear suggestions on what wecould add to make next year's exhibition even bigger andbetter and how we can make it even more commerciallysuccessful for visitors and exhibitors alike."

John Moore (Tractor Parts) Ltd, the Stafford-basedparts specialist, has recently invested significantly innew machining facilities to better serve its customersin the quarry and mining industries.

Now with greatly increased stock levels of cutting edgesection materials, including heat-treated Boron with ahardness of HB500, the company is ideally placed to meetany customer requirement for high quality bolt-on cuttingedges.

These edges are a high turnover item for many quarryingcompanies, given the harsh environment in which they seeaction.

John Moore has been established for over 30 years andhas gained a reputation as being one of the UK's leadingsuppliers of ground engaging equipment and associatedparts. Machinery used by the company's customers isseen across the quarrying, mining, construction, demolitionand recycling industries.

Unlike much of the competition, the company deals directwith its quarrying end users in the majority of instances.Whereas other companies use dealers to sell and distributetheir parts, John Moore is no stranger to dealing direct withits customers. This has a multitude of benefits, fromcutting cost, through to ensuring that the customer gets apart which is exactly to specification and a perfect fit fortheir particular application.

Being the manufacturer, John Moore ensures that all partsare precisely supplied to customer requirements and thereare no middlemen involved, meaning a straight forward, efficient transaction and delivery of parts that are right firsttime, every time. Quality is also paramount in all thecompany's operations.

The company is a specialist in quick turnaround of cuttingedges for quarrying applications, so where a traditional

order from another company may take around two weeksto complete, John Moore can fulfil most orders within twoto three days.

Another benefit of dealing with John Moore is in thecompany's ability to alter parameters of components inhouse. Each job is unique and tailored to the customers'exact requirements, despite the shorter lead times involved.

Where the company's expertise really comes into play is inits ability to be totally flexible, allowing the manufacture ofnot only standard cutting edges to OEM dimensions, butbespoke edges to a specific customer requirement, forexample, replacing a 4 piece edge with a 2 piece edge, orone single edge, altering hole sizes or changing materialthickness.

John Moore's manufacturing facility also produces linerplates and screens for crushing, screening and recyclingplants. Using HARDOX 500 plate, the material can bemachined with straight, threaded, countersunk, counter-bored or plow-bolt holes in any pattern or configuration tomeet any specification.

“With our stock of cutting edge sections and high-poweredmachinery plus special tooling, we can now machine steelswith a hardness of HB600+” states Nick Moore, ManagingDirector of John Moore (Tractor Parts).

“This eliminates many of the normal delays associated withthe process. When ordering from other suppliers, hole pitchvariation can occur, as they heat treat after machining. Wemachine after heat treatment, not before, guaranteeing novariations,” he added.

Kingfisherachieves both inhouse & onsitecompliance forits wearprotectionoperations atannual IMS audit.Leading UK wear protectionspecialist, Kingfisher Industrial, has just passed its annualintegrated management system(IMS) audit with flying colours, maintaining its registration to threekey management standards: ISO

9001:2008, ISO14001:2004 and OHSAS18001:2007 that underpin thecompany's quality and environmental commitments to customers.

“We are delighted that our annual audit has confirmed our continuing registration tothese demanding standards,” said Kingfisher MD, John Connolly. “Within ourindustry there are not many of our competitors that are able to, or have instigated, compliance across these areas. In contrast, Kingfisher is one of a very select fewthat is registered for both in-house and onsite activities, which is a real unique sellingpoint for our company and a real security for our customers.”

The successful audit was conducted by Chamber Certification Assessment ServicesLtd (CCAS), a well established international provider of accredited registrationschemes for management systems. The citation drafted by Nicola Beckitt, LeadAuditor for CCAS stated as follows.

'The assessment has concluded that the company continues to maintain aneffective IMS in accordance with ISO 9001:2008, ISO14001:2004 andOHSAS18001:2007 and its documented processes and procedures. In order toenhance the IMS, the company has invested in the help of an external consultancywho have re-written the IMS and provided total impartiality and objectivity withassistance in the internal audit process and Management Review. The managementteam have demonstrated their commitment and understanding of the requirementsof the standard and evidence of continual improvement was seen.'

“Standards compliance is of fundamental importance to our business, as many ofour blue-chip customers would not employ us without it,” said John Connolly.

“As regards our in-house and on-site activities, our customers need some point ofreference when we are undertaking projects consisting of design, manufacture, protection and installation of process plant and equipment ensuring both nationaland international engineering codes of practice are being adhered to ensuring totalcompliance throughout.”

“Here compliance is essential, especially so in our case, because Kingfisher, unlikemany of its competitors, undertakes the majority of production activities in-house,employing modern efficient machinery and our own skilled workforce. This allows usto respond rapidly to customer needs without reliance on outside resources”.

Our on-site registration also evidences the fact that we continue to display a detailedunderstanding of the installations that we encounter by overcoming the challengesof the surrounding environment and the associated hazards and risks. Bespoke sitesurveys and close customer liaison allow us to assess the risks and plan theexecution with minimum impact on plant and other operations.

Having suitably qualified staff, we are able to limit the potential of downtime and therisks associated with undertaking either mechanical or structural operations. Withpersonnel qualified in CDM, NEBOSH, IOSH, Quality & Environmental control andmanual disciplines such as lifting and operation of plant and equipment (incompliance with LOLER and PUWER regulations), we maintain total controlthroughout the contract life cycle. Whether it is the installation of plant or theerection of processing equipment and structures, we adopt the same approachtowards risks and employ measured contingencies that become apparent once thecontract starts to ensure the key milestone objectives defined at the outset areachieved.

Pix hose &fittingsawardedprestigiouslloyd's registertype approvalIn its quest to be recognisedas the world’s premiermedium to high pressurehose manufacturer, PIX hasrecently been awarded theLloyd’s Register (LR) TypeApproval. This is another‘feather in the cap’ for PIX asit already has DNV, GL andMA approvals for its products, among several others.

The LR Type Approval is anindependent third-partycertification, which attests aproduct’s conformity with specificstandards or specifications, andthe verification of an appropriateproduction quality system. Thisapproval is highly desirable forproducts used in marine andoffshore applications, mining, drilling and industrial plant andprocesses.

Upon receipt of the certification,Operations Director for UK basedPIX Hydraulics (Europe) Ltd,Karan Sethi said: “This is anothertestimony to the quality andperformance one has come toexpect from PIX. We are thrilledto receive this certification as itwill give our customers addedpeace of mind when using ourproducts in safety criticalapplications."

The range of PIX products thathave achieved LR Type Approvalinclude the Performer, Prokomp,Optimal, Thermal, Ultraflex,Impetus, Hi-Pulse and Armourbranded hoses.

Tankersley, England, October 2011 – So impressedwas J & J Stanley Ltd. with the Terex® TL260 wheelloader demonstrator it had on trial that managingdirector Gordon Stanley told Terex Distribution Limited(TDL): “Don’t bother to send a truck to collect themachine, come and pick up a cheque.”

J & J Stanley runs waste and recycling facilities in the Tyne& Wear area and was looking for a wheel loader for its new2.5 acre waste transfer site. Having tried all the contenders, the company’s machine operator, Albert Perkins, had nodoubt that he preferred the Terex® TL260.

“We wanted a compact machine for sorting and stockpiling, and also to load wagons and the plant with wood, soil, construction waste, paper, cardboard and householdrefuse,” says Mr. Stanley. “The Terex® TL260 is morecompact and nippier than the competition, has excellentvisibility for the operator and is very good on fuel,” he adds.

With its 2.6m3 general purpose bucket on the ground, the14.4 tonne TL260 has an overall length of less than 7.25metres and a turning radius of 6.15 metres (at outsidebucket edge). Its load-dependent hydrostatic fan helpsreduce both fuel consumption and noise and is reversibletoo – especially useful in waste environments - while theunique cleaning system simplifies maintenance.

The TL260 is powered by a 128kW Cummins engine whichtransfers power to a two-speed hydrostatic transmission –another feature Mr Stanley likes as, unlike a mechanicalgearbox, it helps hold the machine on a slope. The self-locking differentials reduce tyre wear and the all-round wetdisc brakes also reduce maintenance.

At the front end, the loader’s SP kinematics combine theadvantages of a Z-linkage with a parallel lift action toprovide a lift capacity of 141kN with almost 120kN ofbucket breakout force. J & J Stanley’s machine has a dumpheight of almost 3m and there are also options available forthe TL260 to boost this beyond 4.5m.

In addition to the excellent view from the two door, rubber-mounted ROPS/FOPS cab, machine operator Albert Perkinsappreciated the hydraulically cushioned and weight-adjustable seat, automatic climate control and the height/tiltadjustable steering wheel.

John Crerar, TDL’s Materials Handling Sales Manager said:“The standard specifications of the Terex TL260 wheelloader to operate in a tough waste-handling environmentwithout any modifications demonstrates the high degree ofcapability and quality designed and built into our products.”

Metal Detection Helping ToImprove UK Battery RecyclingThe UKs' Battery Recycling Industry is one of the fastestgrowing sectors of waste recycling.

With many recyclable materials, the issue of sending waste to landfillis based mainly on its unnecessary use of landfill space. Howeverwith batteries, the chemicals which may be contained within the cellscan include lead, mercury or cadmium, all of which can leak into theground causing pollution to the local soil and water.

Not only do batteries pose a significant threat of pollution to landfillsites and the surrounding areas but recycling them can also help torecover valuable metals such as nickel, cobalt and silver.

For this reason, many schemes such as the 'be positive' collectionpoints, are being put into place to help the UK increase its batteryrecycling rate from its recently low level of 3% to the 25% it isexpected to reach under the EU Batteries Directive by 2012. Thisrate is then expected to hit 45% by 2016.

For many battery processingapplications, particularly withautomotive battery recycling, large hammer mills are usedto help break down andseparate the variousmaterials to metals plasticsand sulphuric acid which canthen be sold to re-processors. Unfortunately, asis often the case with many

crushing applications, large tramp metal contaminants can appearwithin the product stream which can cause significant damage to thehammer mills, costing the plant thousands of pounds in repair costsand downtime. An efficient and cost-effective way to prevent thisfrom happening is to install an industrial metal detector. The TN77'Tunnel Type' Detector from Metal Detection Ltd is the ideal solutionto the problems of tramp metal in the recycling process. The TN77will detect ferrous and manganese tramp metals but will overlook themetallic elements present in the batteries, therefore reducingunnecessary stoppages in the system. The TN Search Coil iscompletely encapsulated in fibreglass to prevent damage frombattery acid and the control panel can be supplied inside anadditional cabinet to provide IP66 level protection.

Innovation at theconstruction yard with theMB crusher bucketIt has been 10 years since MB, the Vicenza-basedcompany world leader in its sector, made availableto the earth movement world a piece of equipmentwith unquestionable qualities: the crusher bucket, a

hydraulic machine that works by taking advantage of the excavatorsystem and can be used in many fields of application.

Today, MB's crusher bucket has crossed all borders, from the Far East (thecompany recently opened a branch in Japan) to the “Stars & Stripes” States(where another branch was opened) all the way to South America andOceania, and did not stop even when faced with the cold stones of Siberiaor the burning hot ones of Nigeria.

So, to all companies operating in the earth movement and constructionsector, the MB crusher bucket has become a “must have” piece ofequipment if they want to improve their work process and increase theirprofits.

There are many accounts by customers who have found in MB'sequipment a reliable partner that lasts a long time, with littlemaintenance, easy to transport and that does not take up a lot of spaceat the yard.

Of all the various fields of applications, the qualities of the MBcrusher bucket turn out to be especially useful duringexcavation and filling jobs.

Usually, during excavations and the jobs that follow, thesoil must be dug up, the debris material loaded onto trucksand taken to the nearest dump for disposal, with the trucksthen returning to the worksite and so on. The excavationsite must then be filled in again, thus requiring other trips tothe waste dump, but this time to purchase the samematerial that was dumped just a few days before, which in the meantime has been crushed andprepared in the right size to fill in the trenches.Obviously, the material must be paid for andhauled to the worksite.

Everything becomes simpler and less expensiveby using an MB crusher bucket, which reduces allcosts and times needed for the disposal andprocurement process, up to fully eliminating them.

In fact, the material is already at the worksite, whereit can be reused after having gone throughdemolition processes using pneumatic hammersand pliers. Subsequently, with the MB crusherbucket the material is collected and crushed in thedesired diameter and unloaded directly by thebucket onto the truck or in another location, and canthus be used again, for example, to build yards, roadembankments, drainage works and to fill in variousexcavations.

The MB crusher bucket is especially useful for laying specialpiping in difficult soil. After the excavation and the laying of thepiping, the site must be filled in again, thus requiring other trips tothe waste dump to purchase the same debris material that wasdumped a few days before, crushed and prepared in a size suited tofilling in the trenches. Thanks to the MB crusher bucket, all this iswork is reduced. There is something else to keep in mind: the fact thatthe excavation or trench is filled in with the same material that waspreviously excavated means that the location is formed by the same elements.

Choosing a crusher bucket, then, allows you to save time and money, at the sametime boosting your profits: the crusher bucket is easy to transport, has lowmaintenance costs, does not require an additional operator other than the one whooperates the excavator, and saves fuel that would have been used up by a mobilecrusher, which would in any event be powered by an excavator. Not to mention theenvironmental “cleanliness” of jobs carried out with a minimum amount of dust andnoise levels with low environmental impact.

MRF Systems fromBlue Scotland for twoRecycling SpecialistsTwo leading recycling companies in Scotlandhave recently installed bespoke MRF systems, designed, supplied and installed by BlueScotland. Both organisations are long-standingcustomers and report that their new recyclingplants are performing well.

EIS Waste Services of Aberdeen already operatesa Kiverco system from Blue for “heavy” materialsprocessing and has added the new MRF for“light” construction, commercial, industrial andtrade waste. Rigid plastics, polythene, wood, plasterboard, textiles, paper and card, plus scrapmetals are all being reclaimed and the wholesystem is under cover within a custom builtbuilding.

The EIS recycling plant consists of a number ofinnovative technologies, combined together in abespoke design for optimum material flow andseparation, resulting in clean saleable recyclables. The added bonus is that, through meticulousseparation, tip-to-landfill deliveries have beensignificantly reduced by up to 65%, savingtransport and landfill costs as well as greatlyreducing environmental impact.

A hopper and belt feeder receives the incomingraw waste which is fed by conveyor to a Kiverco820 trommel with 25mm screens for removal offines. The remaining material then passes througha Kiverco sorting station for manual separation, then passes under an end-of-line overbandmagnet for removal of ferrous metals. Additionaldropout bins located at each bay on the sortingline receive additional recyclable items such asnon ferrous and glass bottles. The station has aninfinitely variable speed and extra-wide conveyorbelt and is contained within a spacious heatedand well-lit cabin for maximum operator comfortand security. A blower system has been installedat the extreme end of the MRF to offer maximumflexibility when further clean up of material isrequired.

EIS is an Aberdeen based company owned bythe Sharp family. Operations Manager ColinMcDonald expressed their satisfaction with theirnew MRF. “This plant is performing well andallowing us to reclaim at even better volumes andproduce cleaner end products through ourrecycling of lighter materials. Blue Scotland hasbeen invaluable in helping us select and installthis new MRF and we appreciate their expertisein both the sales and after-sales aspects of ourlong relationship.”

In Glenfarg, Perthshire, another independent andfamily-owned recycling specialist - Binn Skips -has also invested in a new MRF from BlueScotland and which forms part of a large EcoPark development project. This follows recent

purchases of a General Kinematics grizzly feeder and a Doppstadt DW-3060 shredder from Blue Scotland, both of which feed pre-shreddedand pre-screened materials through the newly installed MRF system.

Binn Skips' plant accepts the -150mm shredded and screenedcommingled waste into the primary Kiverco 820 trommel, which isequipped with 15mm and 50mm split drum screens for fines removal. The screened out material then passes through an air separator for“lights” removal and then on to the 4-bay Kiverco picking station forhand sorting, with an overband magnet at the end of the conveyor forsafe removal of ferrous metals. In addition to a high quality, clean rangeof end products from the new plant, Binn Skips is also producing anideal woodwaste fraction from its Doppstadt shredder for RDF materials,as well as excellent greenwaste for composting, which is shredded, windrowed and 10mm screened to high specification for this particularpurpose.

Binn Skips is owned by the MacGregor family with Allan MacGregorheading up the company. Iain Taylor is Head of Operations at Glenfargand reports that their new plant is living up to expectations. “We'vealready seen a marked increase in reclaimed volumes through our newMRF and a most gratifying reduction in tip-to-landfill. Blue Scotland haslooked after us extremely well throughout the development of ourrecycling plants and their after sales product support has beenexcellent, cementing our continuing working partnership with thisspecialist distributor.”

Max X Tract - Does exactly whatit says on the Tin777 Recycling Centre Ltd, the waste management arm of one of theUK's best-known demolition contractors, is maximising its materialsrecovery operations with a pair of Max X Tract Density Separatorssupplied by Cheshire-based Dig A Crusher. The 777 Recycling Centre just outside Croydon in South London features astate-of-the-art processing and extraction system that comprises multiplelevels of screens, trommels and manual picking stations to extract valuableresources from the waste stream. That waste stream - a mix of constructionand demolition and skip waste - arrives at the facility at a rate of more than4,000 tonnes per week, and is converted into a wide array of products fromrefuse derived fuel (RDF), ferrous and non-ferrous metals and plastics foronward processing, and a range of crushed concrete and aggregateproducts for reintroduction to the UK construction industry. But, according to Operations Director Malcolm Beattie, there wassomething missing. “All of our equipment is to the highest standard and ourmanual picking crew were exceptionally good at ensuring that we extractedmetals and other products for resale,” he says. “Yet despite this, we knewthat some valuable products were not being recovered quite as effectivelyas we would like.”

Resource ExtractionThe solution came in the shape of a pair of Max X Tract Density Separatorsthat now form the final stage in 777 Recycling Ltd's resource extractionprocess. Manufactured by Waste Systems Ltd, the Max X Tract is fully self-contained and is ideally suited to applications that require metals to berecovered from or plastics and paper removed from bio-mass material, thereby a perceived waste product into a saleable asset. Weighing just nine tonnes, the Max X Tract uses a one-pass system toprocess up to 150 tonnes/hour, depending upon the feed material. At the 777 Recycling facility, the first Max X Tract unit receives material froma trommel via an elevated conveyor. The first pass through the first DensitySeparator segregates the light and the heavy materials; the light beingdestined for RDF applications, and the heavier materials moving on forfurther processing to the second Max X Tract. Here the final clean upoccurs where wood gets separated from the aggregate ensuring two highquality end products. The first Max X Tract effectively removes anyremaining metals, both ferrous and non ferrous, from the waste stream.According to Beattie, this is a vital part of the process. “With scrap valuescurrently at an all-time high, every ounce of metal we can extract has avalue,” he asserts. “Since we installed the Max X Tract Density Separators,we are recovering an additional four tonnes of metal each week on average,so the machines will pay for themselves in no time.”

Further Cost SavingsBut the added value doesn't end at the recovery of metals. Before the twoDig A Crusher machines were installed, 777 Recycling employed a team of14 pickers to manually pick their way through the waste in the hope ofextracting some additional value from the stream. Since the Max X Tractmachines were installed, the company has been able to reduce this team tojust six people, while actually increasing recovery rates. “Our pickers arevery good but, ultimately, they are human and the speed with which they'rerequired to work to keep up with the waste inputs means they're alwayslikely to miss some potentially valuable materials,” Malcolm Beattieconcludes. “We have no such problems with the Max X Tract machines. They're more than capable of keeping pace with our waste inputs and theyliterally don't miss a thing. The increase in our metal recovery rate speaksfor itself.” By removing the metals and aggregates the wear on the highspeed shredders has reduced by over 70 percent. Now only the RDFmaterial goes into the high speed shredder, giving less downtime andsignificant operational savings.

Precia-Molen has just installedGeneSYS™ software for Ensus attheir Biorefinery site, at Wilton,Teesside providing a totalmanagement system for theirgrain intake operation. The Wilton operation is one of thelargest in the world and provides avehicle unloading and intake facilityfor in excess of 1.2 million tonnesper annum of wheat.Ensus produces a significant part ofthe UK's Bioethanol demand underthe UK's Renewable Transport FuelObligation (RTFO), and generatescarbon savings equivalent to taking300,000 cars off the road. As one ofEurope's largest producers of animalfeed materials the 350,000 tonnes ofhigh protein animal feed producedeach year reduces UK and Europeandemand for soy meal imports thatcontribute to deforestation pressuresin South America. The Group raised £250 million tobuild the plant at Wilton, and a

further £60m investment has beenmade by related parties. Theseinvestments support over 2000 jobsin the UK's farming, logistics andmanufacturing industries, andaccelerate the development of theNorth East UK region as a new greenindustrial hub. Ensus chose the Precia-MolenGeneSYS™ software packagebecause it met four key criteria:• To bring the entire vehicle

unloading operation, includingcontract validation, sampling, laboratory testing, weighing anddischarge on two Precia-Molenweighbridges under the control ofa single PC network.

• To be fast enough to cope with avery tight site layout. With anincoming vehicle every 3 minutesit is crucial that the system is fastenough to ensure that they haveall been tested and accepted fordelivery by the time they arrive atthe weighbridge.

• To be flexible enough to adapt tothe changing needs of Ensus, allowing new commodities to beadded to the database ifnecessary.

• To be fully supported withtechnical back-up and updates.

Consequently, Precia-Molen installedmulti-user GeneSYS™ Enterprise onthe existing Ensus network. All theGeneSYS™ applicationscommunicate with a single MicrosoftSQL database, which is installed onthe dedicated server. Traffic enters the site at the booking-in terminal with the driver gainingaccess by receiving a card from thePrecia-Molen automatic carddispenser. Selecting one of fourtraffic lanes the driver is directed byoverhead electronic signage to theun-sheeting area. The truck then moves forward to thetwo stations in the grain samplingbuilding, here the driver inserts the 24

If the sample fails for any reasonthen the vehicle is put on 'waiting'status and the test details areflagged up on the screen. Thisallows staff to contact the supplier toinform them the load has beenrejected, or to negotiate acceptancebelow contract specification.Drawing forward the driver then re-sheets the load, and proceeds to thedriver console where having swipedhis card he receives either a pass orfail. On receiving a pass (if a fail exitthe site) he proceeds to the truckcontrol lights to await clearance topull onto one of two grain intakeweighbridges. On arrival the driverenters his card; which if he is in thecorrect position will accept andweigh the vehicle; if the truck is atthe wrong weighbridge the cardreader will then inform accordingly. Here the vehicle can tip directly intoone of the two pits where the load isthen transferred into adjacent silos.(With the possibility of hazardous

dust conditions all the hardware inthis area is ATEX compatible). If the truck has arrived on-site with aback load the system will direct himto the DDGS bulk loading area trafficcontrol before allowing the driver todraw onto the first weighbridge andinsert his card into the reader. Afterloading, the truck proceeds onto asecond weighbridge to assess theweight of the now fully loaded truck. Drawing away from either areatrucks then proceed to the siteexitFor the project Precia-Moleninstalled six pit mountedweighbridges, type VS400S,capacity 50,000kg, eleven PM BI300driver cabinets with intercom, fivemotorised RFID dispensers andticket printers and six badgereaders. Additionally, Precia-Molenalso supplied two point-to-pointdocument systems and fourelectronic message board displays.

Precia-Molen also supplied a surfacemounted VS400 weighbridge whichis utilized for the syrup production.Fully automated with a driverconsole, trucks are reversed onto theweighbridge with water and syruploaded into the truck whilst thesystem monitors the weight, sendinga signal to the plc (DDGS controlroom).Mark Wilson - Site OperationsManager, commented on theinstallation, “We handle over one anda half million tonnes of wheat andDDGS truck movements per annum. An efficient electronic receipt &dispatch system is crucial to thesmooth running of our business. The Precia-Molen team has workedclosely with us over the last 18months to ensure that we have aneffective system.”

delivery documentation into a vacuum dispatch system which delivers it tothe sample probe operator in the laboratory above. The operator enters the relevant information including reference number, vehicle registration, and contractor code and commodity type. GeneSYS™then retrieves the contract details form the database and checks that thetransaction is valid. If it is accepted the driver then moves forward to thesampling position where a sample is drawn off by one of two remotelyoperated vacuum spear samplers and sent to the laboratory above fortesting. By the time the sample arrives at the laboratory, GeneSYS™ will alreadyhave printed off a sample document with a check list of the quality testsrequired for this load. The results of each test are fed in by laboratory staffand automatically checked against the pass/fail criteria. If the samplepasses all the quality tests then the vehicle is given permission to unload.

BHSL Top Loader revolutionisesbiomass handling, cutting operatingcosts by up to 40%BHSL, a specialist in materials handling, has unveiled a patented TopLoader for storing, moving and dispensing up to 150 tonnes per day ofbiomass or other agricultural and waste products. Compared with movingfloors and walking floors, the Top Loader is extremely energy efficient. It isdriven by two 2.2kW motors, which operate via a programmable logic controller(PLC) using BHSL proprietary software. With energy savings of up to 60% andsimplified maintenance due to moving parts being located overhead, the TopLoader offers cost savings of up to 40% compared with conventional materialshandling systems.

www.hub-4.com/directory/14418

The Top Loader can be a stand-alone unit or operated as multiple in-line units. It is equally suited to newinstallations or retro-fitting in existingbuildings. Options include installationof CCTV, remote monitoring, intervention by the company'stechnicians when needed, andcustomer access to the BHSL TopLoader information/data screen. Thelightweight system comes in 2m, 4mand 6m versions. The 4m and 6mTop Loader can store materials to amaximum height of 4m. It is priced competitively with moving or walking floors butis more reliable because there is no wear and tear due to dust or moisture ingress. The Top Loader is installed by BHSL technicians and carries a 12-month warranty.

The Top Loader is mounted on a dual-rail track above the storage bunker. Itscarriage sits on the rails and travels backwards and forwards. Mounted on thecarriage and spanning the storage bunker is a blade that moves up and down. Asthe carriage moves forward, the blade comes down and into contact with thematerial in the bunker. The Top Loader then collects material from the leadingedge, traverses across the top of the pile and delivers the load onto a conveyor. Inthis way the Top Loader clears the storage bunker as it goes, making refilling easy.An overhead cable management system ensures that wiring is secured and freefrom hazards.

The Top Loader material storage bunker walls can be concrete or wood and thesmooth walls prevent any material remaining in the storage bunker. Front loadersor trucks can be used to fill the bunker.

Moving floors and walking floors both typically have to expend energy to move all the material in the storage bunker todeliver a small amount to the conveyor. The Top Loader overcomes the problem by removing material from the leadingedge and depositing a controlled amount into the collector or conveyor, so there is no requirement to move all the materialin the bunker.

Guttridge launch aninnovative dustsuppression hoppersystem for dryflowing materials.Guttridge have just launched a newaward winning dust suppression hoppersystem into the UK Bulk HandlingMarket. Following years of fine tuningand development work companiesaround the world have acclaimed thenew hopper as a total success inapplications involving dry, free flowingmaterials.

Now available for the first time in the UK thenew hopper ingeniously contains the dustwithin the product stream when dischargingdry bulk materials. Thus, it cleverly avoids theneed for the more complicated retractableloading spouts or telescopic loading bellowsthat are more commonly used in bulk outloading and flat store loading applications.

Originally designed for fertilisers the new dustsuppression hopper has proven success withmany other dry materials including; cereals, pet foods, sugar, salt and sand. Models areavailable in either polyethylene, steel orstainless steel.

Uncomplicated to install and easy to operateand maintain there is no product separationduring the fall of material meaning that finematerial does not become concentrated inthe centre of the stockpile. At the point ofloading the dust suppression loading hopperconcentrates the discharge of dry goods as asolid column through free air into roadvehicles, rail wagons, stock piles, storagecontainers or bags.

Grant Allen, Technical Manager of ImpactFertilisers in New Zealand, commented, “Eachyear we load 120,000 tonnes of single superphosphate for bulk shipment which generatedlocalised dust, resulting in environmentalcomplaints from the wider community andon-going health and safety issues. Afterinstalling the new dust suppression hopperthis has resulted in a significant improvementto the working environment and reducedenvironmental complaints to zero. All this hasbeen achieved with no impact on the speedof the loading operation and has in somecases resulted in an increased rate.”

Currently being trialled on various sites within the UK the new dustsuppression hopper reduces hazards, health risks, dust, wastage, cleaningand maintenance costs and increases storage capacity.

Guttridge Ltd is a leading UK equipment manufacturer and a provider of awide range of services and bulk powder handling machinery. With anextensive in-house portfolio of equipment Guttridge also partners with arange of Pan European equipment and solutions providers allowing them topotentially fulfil any requirement.

Improvedsand qualityfor ReddalSandA new sand washing plant for Reddal Sand hasresulted in a significant improvement in thequality of the sand being produced at their site inthe South of Norway.

Reddal Sand is located in Grimstad, Aust-Agderand has supplied a variety of constructionmaterials to major projects in the area since1989. These include materials for use in themanufacture of roofing tiles, concrete, roadconstruction and various types ofgroundworks including sports fields, playgrounds and golf courses.

Morten and Jan Tore Pedersen of Reddal Sand beganlooking for suitable wash plants as they believed theycould recover more material than was currently the casefrom the sand and gravel reserve. A particular area ofconcern was the top 3 to 4 metres of the deposit whichcontained a high level of fines and clay contamination thatwas compromising the final quality of their sand product. After looking into a number of potential suppliers theychose the Evowash sand washing plant from NorthernIreland company, CDE Global.

“We chose CDE equipment as a result of the experiencethey were able to demonstrate in the provision ofequipment for similar applications in many countries” saysMorten Pedersen. “An additional factor in their favour wasthe flexibility they showed in terms of being able tocustomise the plant to the specific nature of the materialwe are processing.”

The new sand washing plant includes the Evowash 71and Evowash 151 supplied by Ankerløkken Equipmentwho represents CDE in Norway. “The Evowash allows usto maximise the production of quality sand” says MortenPedersen. “The new installation has ensured that we areable to offer a higher quality sand product to ourcustomers, which sets us apart from other suppliers in thearea.”

Reddal Sand are supplying material to a diverse range ofcustomers including roof tile manufacturer Skarpnes aswell as Skarpnes Rør (concrete pipes), Ribe Betong(concrete), Digernes Betong (concrete) and Betong Sør(concrete). The company also supplied all the aggregatesused on the construction of the new E18 road betweenGrimstad and Kristiansand through Ølen Betong(concrete).

Samples taken of material from the site suggest it to beone of the best reserves of natural sand and gravel in theSouth of Norway. The current processing licence is initiallyfor a 20 year period with an option to extend for severalmore years. Current production capacity at the sitefollowing the addition of the two Evowash sand washingplants is 200,000 tonnes per year.

Reddal Sand is a member of PGL - the NorwegianFederation of crushed rock and sand and gravel suppliersand all the concrete aggregates produced meet therelevant Norwegian quality standards in co-operation withthe Control Council for Concrete Products.

Bell wheeledloaders a positivemove for Earthline Plant operators are on a seemingly never-endingrollercoaster ride in their efforts to balancegrowing costs with static return rates. Thatbalance leaves little room for unscheduleddowntime. One industry leader, Wiltshire-based Earthline, hasrecently bought a brace of Bell wheeled loaders -and is really enjoying the ride.

Since its foundation 30 years ago, Earthline hasgrown to be one of the largest independentearthmoving, recycling and quarrying companies inthe south of England.

Like every other business in its field, the family runcompany has experienced tough periods, but it hasremained successful through diversification and acommitment to being flexible to customer needs.

The diversification of applications means Earthlinealso has to ensure that much of the equipment itbuys is capable of performing well at different tasksand in different environments.

This is one of the reasons it opted to demo awheeled loader from Bell Equipment last year at itsShellingford Quarry site, near Faringdon, inOxfordshire.

Earthline director Philip Coplestone said: “I was a bitnervous and sceptical at first, as Bell's loaders arerelatively new machines to the UK market. Bell hasalways been known in this country for its ADTs,though the fact that they are John Deere-built gaveus some confidence.

“And it didn't take us long to realise what a greatpiece of kit a Bell loader is. The Bell loaders evenlook like really solid quarrying machines. The highspec and the build quality stands out againstanything else.”

The demo went well, and an order was soon placedfor a Bell L1806E - a mid-sized model in Bell'sseven-strong loader range - even though Earthlinehad just ordered a couple of loaders from anothermanufacturer.

Coplestone explained: “We don't like to put all oureggs in one basket, and we were keen to see theBells in a real operational environment. The demowas enough to persuade us to put our toe in thewater and actually order one.”

He went on: “The drivers think they're great; they'rereally easy to maintain, very reliable and nice andpowerful to operate.”

Despite the positive reception for the Bell loaders, good fortune also smiled on Bell.

Earthline discovered one morning that one of itsother loaders had been vandalised overnight, meaning an urgent replacement was needed.Coplestone got in touch with Bell and agreed toorder a second L1806E loader in return for Bellloaning Earthline a larger L2606E model at shortnotice to fill the operational gap while the newmachine was awaiting delivery.

Neville Paynter, managing director of Bell EquipmentUK, said: “This was a fabulous opportunity for Bell:our loaders had been endorsed by a major player inthe industry. Luckily, we were able to reassign ourL2606E demo model to Earthline quite quickly, whichhopefully saw them through that particularoperational problem.”

Bell launched its wheeled loaders at the end of 2008,with the first machines delivered to UK customers in2009. That same year, Bell launched a versionspecifically for the waste and recycling industry, capitalising on the unique QuadCool cooling system, which comes as standard on all Bell loaders andwhich vastly reduces any downtime due to debrisbuild up.

The onset of the global recession slowed the sale ofnew machines across the entire industry, but Bell alsohad to overcome the hurdle of being the “new kid onthe block” in terms of its loaders.

“We always recognised that it would take time toconvince UK customers that our loaders were as strongand reliable as our dump trucks,” explained Paynter.“But we also knew that, once a customer had triedthem out, they would find it difficult to find fault withthem. We have always been confident in the quality ofthese machines, as Earthline discovered.”

Earthline's second Bell L1806E loader was delivered atthe end of June this year - by which time Coplestoneand his operators had seen enough from the on-loanL2606E and the original L1806E to be suitablyimpressed.

“Pound for pound, they seem to be more powerful thanother makes,” said Coplestone. “And the spec isfantastic. They are definitely good value for money, andI wouldn't hesitate in buying more assumingthe deal was right.”

The Bell loaders are both working on the ShellingfordQuarry site, alongside a combination of nine otherloaders. One L1806E is working in a recyclingapplication, processing hard core, concrete anddemolition waste, while the other machine is involved inthe excavation and haul of building sand.

Each loader will typically shift 6-700 tonnes ofdemolition and associated recycling waste per day, orabout 400 tonnes of sand.

“We've definitely seen benefits in reduced downtimewith the Bells,” said Coplestone. “And we also knowthat the support we get from Bell, should anything gowrong, is second-to-none.”

Philip and his co-director, brother Matthew Coplestone, are no strangers to Bell, despite this being their firstforay into Bell wheeled loaders.

Back in 2003, Earthline was running Bell B40Darticulated dump trucks alongside some B25Ds. But theBells were phased out and replaced by a fleet of ADTsfrom another manufacturer.

Philip Coplestone admits that the decision was not a good one.

“We went away from Bell for commercial reasons,” he said. “But it was a bigmistake. We had no end of trouble with the replacements. So, as soon as wecame towards the end of the warranty periods we switched back to Bell.”

Earthline now operates a fleet of four Bell B40D dump trucks, all of which arefitted with Bell's advanced Fleetm@tic GPS fleet management system, whichCoplestone refers to in glowing terms.

The B40Ds, widely regarded as the most fuel efficient ADTs in the world interms of their weight-to-performance ratio, are operating in a variety ofearthmoving, landfill and quarrying tasks depending upon seasonal andcustomer requirements.

They each typically haul in excess of 1,200 tonnes of building sand orlimestone over an average 600-metre haul cycle, or around 1,700 tonnes oftop soil if carrying out landfill duties. The limestone quarry work is supportedby a 70-tonne Volvo EC700 excavator and a 45-tonne Komatsu PC450excavator.

Coplestone said: “The Fleetm@tic system allows us to accurately measureproduction quantities and machine performance, including differentiationbetween the various materials we are handling. It leaves little to guess work, meaning we know exactly how we are performing commercially. Fleetm@ticis a brilliant bit of kit.”

As with the wheeled loaders, he said that the machine operators muchpreferred the Bell ADTs, due to things like the noticeably smooth gearchanges and the general comfort in the cab.

“Put quite simply, they are a well-made piece of machinery,” saidCoplestone, “which is exactly what we need to avoid unscheduleddowntime wherever possible, to satisfy our customers' demands and tosucceed commercially.”

He added: “There's no doubt that it's very tough at the moment. Rates arenot going up, but costs continue to rise.

“Fuel is certainly our biggest cost, while machine reliability combined withperformance becomes increasingly important. These things have alwaysbeen significant in terms of running costs, but the reduced margins acrossthe industry mean they are more acute factors than ever before. Ourdecision to turn to Bell very much complements our drive for highperformance and high efficiency.”

CEMEX Upgrade theirSand Processing with DUODUO was once again on hand to provide leading building materials company CEMEX with theirexpert knowledge and the supply of equipment to meet their needs at Angerstein Wharf. TheAngerstein aggregates plant was installed by DUO five years ago as CEMEX replaced their firedamaged plant and took the opportunity to increase the site's efficiency and capacity. Due todemand for CEMEX to further increase its supply to the construction market, it was time again for anupgrade.

DUO recently completed the installation of two new sand plants to process the fines from sea dredgedmaterials. The new sand plants, which have more than doubled the sand processing capacity for CEMEX atAngerstein, will each operate at a nominal 200 tonnes per hour, although each plant can handle a maximumof 250 tonnes per hour at peak time. DUO designed the inlet to the plants to provide an evenly distributedflow to the two plants in order to maximise their efficiency and providing total peak output of an impressive500 tonnes per hour.

HUB Issue - 19 17/10/11 12:58 Page 36

Page 37: Hub-4 Issue 19

The sand plants not only providehigher output levels for CEMEX, butalso a quality end product; this isdelivered through the use ofadvanced hydrocyclonetechnology. This technologyprovides consistent low moisturecontent dewatering of product, without loss of useful fines and isdesigned to ensure easymaintenance.

The sand plants receive theunderflow from two TerexCedarapids horizontal screens; thisunderflow contains -5mm forprocessing by the aforementionedhydrocyclones. The processedsand is dewatered and stockpiledvia the existing conveyors, and theused water is then processed forreuse in the wash plant to minimisewater use and promotesustainability. Access to both sandplants is available via the fullygalvanised support structures, which include support of thecyclones and dewatering screens,as well as steps and walkways.

When asked about the installationFintan Mckeever, Director at DUOcommented “Having installed theturnkey solution that CEMEX arecurrently operating at theirAngertsein site, we were in anexcellent position to assist themwith this upgrade in terms ofunderstanding the onsiterestrictions and their existingoperation.” He added “Theinclusion of the new equipmentwas designed to utilise the footprintof the sand plants that were beingreplaced and to work in harmonywith the existing plant.”

CEMEX's Glyn Richards, AreaOperations Manager, commentedthat “The new sand plants havegiven the site the ability tosignificantly increase throughputsand ensure we continue to meetrising market demand. They havebeen an ideal match for the existingDUO plant."

Mentor Trainingintroduce two newcourses for theQuarrying andWaste IndustryMentor Training, leading UK provider of training andassociated services for all types of materials handlingequipment and workplace transport has introducedtwo new courses for the Quarrying and Waste Industry

Quarries and landfills aredangerous places for untrainedoperatives, but it is not onlythose operating heavymachinery that requireguidance in order to maintain asafe working environment.Light vehicles such as LandRovers working on site arealso potentially dangerous ifnot operated correctly.

Mentor has therefore introduced a new light vehiclecourse which offers a comprehensive look at this type ofvehicle and the hazards involved with its operation. Thecourse incorporates health and safety legislation, pre-use inspection and provides a detailed look at themachine's control and their use in a workingenvironment.

General and quarry specific driving hazards, such asstability and negotiating slopes are covered to ensureoperatives can safely deal with the off road terrain.Trailer towing can also be included, if required.

These courses are carried out by qualified industrytutors who have undergone accredited training ininstructional techniques and skills assessment; allcourses are held at the customer's site to allow for sitespecific/operational training.

Air supported conveyor fills tall order forclean, low-maintenance operation

The nation's largest producer of construction aggregates has employed an innovative air-supported conveyorsystem to serve its new railcar loading station, allowing the firm to ship clinker in bulk quantities to its grindingfacilities in Port Manatee and Tampa. With its stable ride and fully-enclosed construction, the system containsfugitive dust and reduces maintenance requirements, while taking excellent advantage of very limited space.

When company officials at the Vulcan Materials cement plant in Newberry, FL decided to ship clinker to remote grindingfacilities, they knew it would require adding a new conveyor and load-out structure. The real challenge to the projectcame in designing the system so it would fit with the plant's existing silos and conveyors.

“The only practical option was to locate the railcar loading conveyor next to the existing pan conveyor, which carriesclinker to the finish mill,” explained Maintenance Manager Jim Kerns. “It was determined that the new conveyor would fitin a hallway running under the silos, but we knew that once installed, it would completely fill the available space,” he said.

As a result, clean-up of any fugitive material accumulatingunder or around the conveyor would be extremely difficultand potentially dangerous without stopping the adjacentpan conveyor and shutting down production. Thatrealization led to the search for a highly reliable conveyingsystem with the proven ability to operate for extendedperiods with very little maintenance, one that could preventthe escape of fugitive material and also protect the loadfrom rain that would introduce unwanted moisture to theproduct.

Selecting an Air-Supported System

After reviewing a variety of designs and proposals, thecompany specified a Martin Engineering® Air-SupportedConveyor, a simple and economical system that resolvesmany of the issues encountered with conventional beltconveyors. With no moving parts that require maintenanceon the load-carrying side, the system could be installed inthe close quarters of the hallway under the clinker silo.

“Air-supported conveyors eliminate the carrying-side idlersused on conventional conveyors, and instead use a film ofair rising from a troughed pan to lift the belt,” explainedGreg Bierie, Global Project Manager for Martin Engineering.

“By removing a source of friction that requires periodicmaintenance, air-supported designs offer significantadvantages -- including energy, environmental and safetybenefits -- yet the cost is competitive with traditional beltconveyors,” he said.

The Martin Engineering system does not require acompressor, powering up to 600 feet (183 meters) ofconveyor supported by a single low-power centrifugal fan.Extremely low friction inherent to the design can reduceoverall drive power requirements by as much as 30% on ahorizontal conveyor.

The use of air supported conveyors also eliminates theneed for idler adjustment to correct belt tracking issues. The advantages include extended belt life and reducedmaintenance costs, as well as improved safety by limitingemployee exposure to moving components.

Simple Concept for a Smooth Ride

The concept of the air-supported design is fairly simple, with the load zone and carrying sections contained in aplenum that's pressurized by the centrifugal fan. Thecarrying surface of the plenum is typically shaped to the

parabolic curve profile of a conventional belt conveyor, with a 35º trough. Holes inthe top of the plenum create an air film between the plenum and belt, whichsupports the moving load.

The return run does not require air support, and many systems incorporateconventional idlers on the return side. By using standard take-up drives, chutes andsupport structures, the air-supported design allows conversions of, or connectionsto, existing standard belt conveyors.

At the Newberry plant, the 24-inch wide (610 mm) air-supported conveyornegotiates a vertical curve to elevate the load 25 feet (7.6 meters) over the 290 footlength (88 meters) from the bottom of the clinker silo to the top of the load-outstructure. Capacity is set at 400 ST per hour (363 tons) of 1-inch minus (25 mm-)material, with a belt speed of 350 feet per minute (106.7 meters per minute). Thetroughed conveyor is moved by a 25 HP (18.6 kW) drive motor, and the air supportsystem uses a 15 HP (11.2 kW) blower to raise the belt.

The air-supported design from Martin Engineeringeliminates maintenance issues such as idler lubrication andbelt alignment, and the modular system allows replacementof existing conveyor sections with CEMA standardconstruction. Air-supported and conventional rollersections can be mixed to accommodate loading zones, tracking idlers, belt scales or other needs. With its stablepath, an air-supported conveyor can operate at a steeperincline than roller conveyors, which can reduce the overalllength and installed cost.

Two belt feeders at the Newberry plant meter the materialthrough rolling blade gates to deliver a consistent load tothe conveyor and prevent the “starve and flood” conditionsthat can impede smooth operation. The material flows intoceramic-lined transfer chutes, also supplied by MartinEngineering, then onto the conveyor.

As the material enters the discharge tower, it passes over abelt scale and into a retractable dustless discharge chute, which extends down into the railcar opening. Thedischarge chute is installed on a positioner that delivers upto 6 feet (1.8 meters) of travel perpendicular to the tracks toaccommodate various loading hatch arrangements. Aninsertable dust collector is installed at the head pulley tocatch any material that becomes airborne.

“Fugitive material control was a critical element of thissystem,” Kerns added. “We needed to prevent the needfor maintenance in the confined space location, but wealso had environmental objectives. Alligators and otherprotected species inhabit this area, and we wanted toensure that dust didn't migrate from the process.”

Results at Vulcan's Newberry plant have been verypositive, and the company reports virtually maintenance-free service from the air-supported system. “The productcondition is excellent from the smooth handling,” Kernsconcluded. “And with the fully-enclosed system, there isno contamination of the conveyed material or escape offugitive dust.”

Vulcan Materials Company, based in Birmingham, AL, isthe nation's largest producer of construction aggregatesand a major producer of other construction materials, including asphalt, cement and ready-mixed concrete. Thefirm produces aggregates (primarily crushed stone, sandand gravel) that are used in nearly all forms of construction, particularly the large quantities of aggregates needed tobuild roads and commercial properties.

Aptech has supplied two pneumatic conveying systems as partof a major gas pipe project in the Greater London area. Thesystems were designed to backfill 6ft and 8ft tunnels withground glass or sand.

Rather than relying on the traditional method of using liquid grout to filltunnels of this type, the use of a dry fill was favored. Once grout is set, ground movement can cause it to crack, resulting in potentiallydamaging levels of stress being imposed on the gas pipe. A dry fillwould allow the pipe to move. Then there was the question whether itwould be possible to pneumatically convey dry fill the distancesrequired.

“Aptech were the only company to develop a solution that we hadconfidence in.” says Chris Rixon, advisor to the project. “Following smallscale trials, we were impressed with the final designs and ability tomanufacture pneumatic conveying systems that would fill the tunneleffectively.”

“To have used liquid grout would have required building bulkheadsalong the tunnel at frequent intervals and then pumping in grout to fillbehind them. Even then, this method makes it difficult to fill to the roofand provide a complete and stable fill. Originally a year had beenallowed to fill the tunnels with liquid grout, but Aptech completed thedry fill in just four months.”

Aptech's design included support and movement of the conveying pipein the tunnel. A cable also runs down the tunnel to instruments at theend of the pipe.

Robert Skelton, Aptech's managing director says “These machinesoperate at high pressure, so can convey long distances. Instead of arotary valve which would wear, they use a screw conveyor to meter thesand into the conveying pipe. The two machines, for small and largetunnel filling, were designed, built and put straight to use. For otherapplications, this high pressure method of pneumatic conveying issuitable for conveying cement, minerals and biomass.”

The sizing of the conveying systems uses Aptech's unique pneumaticconveying software. This analyses each section of the conveyingsystem, predicting velocity and pressure change at every stageincluding changes in pipe diameter.

The two systems were distinct insofar as the smaller, lower pressuresystem was designed to discharge ground glass or sand from 1Te bigbags and convey it at up to 14Te/hr to fill tunnels up to 300m long. Thelarger, higher pressure system was designed to transfer the dry fill fromsilos to a delivery system, weigh and convey it at up to 60Te/hr to filltunnels up to 1000m long.

With over 30 years of experience specialising in the design, supply andinstallation of process systems and equipment, Aptech has establisheditself among the leading players in powder and solids handling. Throughusing the latest technology, their comprehensive range of productsdeliver technically advanced yet cost effective solutions.

C&K Fitzpatricklaunches theWorkSmart range oftroughing setsIt's no secret that industry in Ireland isexperiencing difficult operating conditions. The conveying sector has been hit particularlyhard by the collapse of the quarrying industrywhich comprised a large proportion of theentire sector. C&K Fitzpatrick has respondedto this change by looking for efficiencieswithin their existing high quality products anda good example of this is the new WorkSmartrange of troughing roller sets.

The Irish troughing set market is dominated bythe widespread use variable angle troughing sets. While these sets are useful for certainapplications, they can be vulnerable to damageon wing rollers or twisting of the frame. Howeverany replacement would have to be compatiblewith these rollers which are used throughout thequarrying and recycling industries.

“We looked at where savings could be madewithout compromising quality” says MarkFitzpatrick. “the solution was to utilize theSandvik (formerly Gurtec) GUP line which massproduces standard rollers at the rate of one everyfifteen seconds.”

The Sandvik GUP roller production line is a stateof the art line based at Schoppenstedt inGermany. The line is fully automated withautomatic cutting, welding and powder coating ofthe rollers. Shafts are also manufactured on theautomated line and fitted complete with bearingand multiple labyrinth seal. These rollers complyto Sandik's high quality standards and areinterchangeable with rollers from the manual GST(bespoke rollers) line.

C&K Fitzpatrick have carefully designed andmanufactured a frame to be interchangeable withexisting Sandvik and competitor variable anglesets. In most cases it is a simple matter of boltingone set out and the new WorkSmart in. Onceinstalled, all of the rollers are of the “drop-in” typeand so there is no struggling corroded U-bolts.The fixed angle design provides a secure sidesupported troughing set capable of standing upto demanding applications. While the angle baseand off-set rollers ensure that any material build-up can easily fall free.

This type of innovation is key to maintaining acompetitive position in difficult trading conditions.C& K Fitzpatrick has implemented this innovationthroughout their range of conveyor belting, beltfasteners, belt cleaners and conveyoraccessories, bringing value to the customerwithout resorting to lower grade products.

Flexco Introduces newstate of the art test rigFlexco recently welcomed a new addition to itsproduct development lab, which will acceleratethe design and testing of new products. The120,000 lb. capacity test rig will boost productdevelopment efficiency, making way for newconcepts and solutions. While there are othertest rigs in the industry, the custom-made rigwas specifically designed by Flexco engineers toput a variety of products to work and measurethe success and compatibility of each.

The rig replaces the previous test rig, which wasutilized heavily for the past 30-plus years at Flexco.

“The diversified product offering at Flexco, combinedwith increased belt tensions and the continuingevolution of belt construction, prompted us to investin this new rig,” Greg Westphall, director ofengineering at Flexco, said. “It's a one-of-a-kindmachine designed and built by Flexco to enhance ourtesting platform and accelerate our design process.”

Westphall is quick to point out that, although the newrig is a significant upgrade from the previous one, it isnot designed to replace field-testing. Instead, the newtest rig ensures that products have undergonerigorous in-house testing before being placed in thefield.

While the previous rig was focused mainly on testingmechanical belt fastening systems, the new rig willtest the full line of Flexco products, including trackers, cleaners, plows, rollers, and lagging. Located in closeproximity to the engineering department at theDowners Grove, Ill. headquarters of Flexco, the rigmeasures 24 feet (7.3 m) high and 12 feet (3.6 m) feetwide and weighs approximately 60,000 lbs.

The rig is modeled after the DIN-22110-2 Standard. Itis equipped with six lagged 32” (800 mm) pulleys witha maximum belt speed of 1600 ft/min (~8 m/s). Beltwidths from 8” to 32” (200 mm to 900 mm) can betested, while tension can be cycled dynamically up to120,000 lbs (533 kN) of force. The rig also featuresHMI touch-screen technology, hydraulically-actuateddynamic tracking, and a catwalk that hugs theperimeter of the machine for easy viewing and testing. The new design also allows for greater accessibility ofdata acquisition equipment, including high-speedcameras and vibration and force transducers.

“While the capabilities of the rig are impressive, thesize offers additional benefits,” Westphall states.“When you can test cleaning, fastening, tracking, andother product functions all at the same time, you notonly gauge the performance of individual products, but also their compatibility. This aligns with the Flexcophilosophy of a holistic approach to maximizing beltconveyor productivity.”

Guttridge supply Carier™Cereals Handling Equipmentfor new Cereals HandlingProject

Guttridge's experience andreputation of manufacturing bulkmaterial handling equipment hasrecently resulted in an order ofCarier equipment for a newinstallation in the FarmingIndustry.

Working alongside the maincontractor Chief Industries UK Ltdwho designed the new plant andsupplied a 75t/h dryer and a 100t/haspirator for the project, Guttridgemanufactured and supplied a range ofCarier 100t/h conveyors and elevatorsall of which were installed at KneesallLodge Farm which is part of theThoresby Farming Estate.

Chief Industries UK Ltd have years ofexperience in the design andinstallation of grain handling facilities, from on-farm drying and storage tolarge port terminals and is the UKsubsidiary of Chief Industries based inNebraska, USA.

Choosing Guttridge to supply was astraightforward decision as the Carierbrand is well known and respected inthe UK. Mark Temple-Global SalesManager of Chief Industries UK Ltd,commented, “This installation wasparticularly environmentally sensitiveand we had to fulfil certain criteriawith regard to noise emissions. As

well as supplying our own equipment to within given limits wewere confident that the CARIER range of equipment would fulfilour requirements and compliment our own high standards”

Operating at 100tph material is fed into either of the 2 wet grainpits and is subsequently fed via chain and flight conveyor ontoan inclined conveyor which feeds the aspirator pre-cleanerwhich removes dust, chaff, husks, awns and material lighterthan the grain. From this point material is transported verticallyby a belt and bucket elevator where it passes through a divertervalve and into the dryer with any overflow returned via ahorizontal conveyor to the wet grain pit.

Dry product is then fed onto an inclined chain and flightconveyor which supplies the second belt and bucket elevator. As before material passes through a second divertor valve(same duty) and is then delivered onto an inclined conveyoronto the final 6000t store and bulk outload conveyor.

Although a relatively simple operation, the Carier equipmentprovides a cost effective and reliable solution for this type ofgrain handling system.

Specifically built for cereals handling and storage on farms theCarier range is now fully integrated into the existing Guttridgeproduct ranges. Offering high quality at a low cost the newCarier range of conveyors and elevators is designed forthroughputs between 40-100tph of cereals. Suitable forhandling a wide range of free flowing and semi-free flowingproducts the Carier range has many applications throughout theCereals Industry.

All the equipment was successfully installed and commissionedby Chief UK, including the PLC control system.
