In a bid to step up flu protec-tion for their children, par-

ents have voiced their supportfor the government initiative tobar public activities and gath-erings, even though it wouldaffect the social and economichealth of the entire country.

Business takes a back seat“The possible financial dam-

age to my business cannot becompared with damage to myson’s life,” says Kawee Vipoom-itsitsakul, a lawyer and father ofa primary-school child.

Kawee has given his son a flumask and other items to pro-tect him from catching thevirus at school, and has toldhim to wash his hands regular-ly as well as take a shower afterschool. He also asks the fami-ly’s nanny to take a showerwhen she arrives each day be-fore taking care of the child.

Adding to these privatemeasures is a Public HealthMinistry directive that givesauthorities the power to pro-hibit large gatherings of people

at places such as theatres, restaurants, department storesand concert halls, where flucould spread more quickly.

Though the effects of closingbusinesses have been widelydiscussed, many business peo-ple have voiced support for thepolicy.

“Using the Internet moreand seeing my clients privatelywill help reduce our exposureto crowded places,” saysSakawrat Amatavisuit, ownerof manufacturing firm Trinityand a mother of three children, aged nine, 19 and 21.

She has told her children totake Vitamin C, wear protec-tive masks and do more exer-cise. “Going to the cinema orthe theatre is temporarilybanned, and none of my chil-dren is complaining about it,”she says.

Supporting school closures Nantinee Jantaparaboon, a

mother of a sixth-grader, saysthe closures of public placesincluding schools, if enforced, needed to be done simultane-ously – otherwise the measure

would be useless for stoppingthe spread of flu.

“School closures might be agood opportunity for students

to study by themselves. However, catch-up classesshould be provided later,” shesays.

To counter the spread of type-A (H1N1) flu, the Bangkok MassTransit Authority (BMTA)wants to install alcohol-basedhand sanitisers in all its 3,600buses, a senior official saidyesterday.

However, acting BMTAdirector Opas Phetmunee saidthe high cost of installationand materials meant theBMTA would first seek budgetapproval from the ministries oftransportation and publichealth.

The installation of handsanitisers would cost Bt10 mil-lion while the BMTA’s otheranti-flu proposal – giving outsanitary masks to passengers –would cost Bt2 million per day.

The proposals are an addi-tion to five measures alreadyin operation – having driversand conductors wear masks, thorough cleansing of all busesarriving at garages, having allbuses remove curtains, havingair-conditioned buses operateventilators every 10 minutes, and cleaning a bus’s handrailsafter every run.

“Despite the financial bur-den involved, the BMTA wantsto cooperate in preventing thespread of flu ... If the pandemicgets worse, we will considernew measures, including usinga sterilising spray,” said Opas.

Cyber crimelords using bigbusinesstacticsCyber criminals are aping execu-tives when it comes to sales, marketing and risk managementin the world of online treachery, according to networking giantCisco.

“The novel thing is that theyhave taken the Harvard BusinessSchool, General Electric board-room business training andapplied it to their techniques,”said Patrick Peterson, Cisco chiefsecurity researcher.

Peterson cited how cyberhackers capitalised on interest inthe death of pop icon MichaelJackson in late June.

Fake news on JacksonDisasters, celebrity doings and

other major news is routine fodderfor bogus e-mails and websitesbooby-trapped with computerviruses, but in the case of Jackson’sdeath, crooks cranked out fakenews stories to dupe readers.

“They brought the Jacksonstory to market in a way thatrivals media outlets. They have anadvantage; they don’t have to doany reporting.”

Billions of spam messageswith links to trick websites orvideos promising scintillatingJackson images and informationwere fired off in the days after hisJune 25 death, according to Cisco.

“Sales leads” that followedonline links were turned into “cus-tomers”, whose computers werestealthily infected with nefariouscodes for stealing data, usurpingcontrol of machines.

Crooked SMSCyber crooks have also taken

to sending blanket text messagesto cellphones with numbersbased on area codes of localbanks directing people to call into a service centre to addresssupposed concerns about theiraccounts.

Callers are connected to automated voice systems that, feigning to represent the banks, ask people to enter account passwords and other personalinformation that can later beexploited, Peterson said. – A F P

ABritish girl who had adonor heart grafted onto

her own after suffering cardiacfailure as a baby has had thetransplant removed and is liv-ing a healthy life with her ownheart, doctors said yesterday.

The case of Hannah Clark isthought to be the only one inthe world where a child’s fail-ing heart recovered enoughfor the donor organ to be re-moved, the British surgeonstold reporters.

‘Like magic’“The possibility of recovery

of the heart is just like magic,”said Imperial College of

London Professor MagdiYacoub, who treated Hannahfrom the beginning.

Hannah, now 16, suffered asa baby from severe heart fail-ure due to cardiomyopathy, aproblem with the muscle ofthe heart, and in July 1995,when she was two years old, doctors transplanted a donorheart next to hers.

The new organ soon tookover much of the functioningof her own heart and Hannahbegan to recover.

However, she suffered froma type of cancer known as EBVPTLD, a common side effectof the drugs given to trans-plant patients to stop their im-

mune systems rejecting neworgans.

ChemotherapyShe was treated with

chemotherapy and otherdrugs but the cancer kept re-turning. Doctors reduced herdosage of immunosuppressiondrugs to stem the disease, butas a result, her transplantedheart began to fail.

In contrast however, herown heart recovered and be-gan functioning normally.

In February 2006, the teamdecided to remove the donororgan so the immunosuppres-sion could be stopped – some-thing that had never beendone before.

Thirty-nine months later,Hannah has completely recov-ered from the cancer and herheart is functioning normally.

What’s a woman worth? American R&B-soul singer-songwriter Alicia Keys

certainly has an opinion on the subject, opining in the lyrics for her 2002 hit “AWoman’s Worth”, that her men would bewell to give her diamonds, a cruise aroundthe world and, of course, tender love.

The Thai ladies taking part in thisSunday’s back-to-back performances at 2 andat 7 titled “What Women Worth” at theThailand Cultural Centre would no doubtagree with Keys’ appraisal, though they’retaking to the stage to raise funds for a wor-thy cause – the kids at Ban Home Hug.

But fear not: Songstresses MaleewanJemina, Saranya Songsermsawasd, RadklaoAmratisha, Sukanya Miguel, HaruthaiMuangboonsri and Sirintip Harnpradit willall be singing numbers that relate to the con-cert’s title so the audience will go home witha good idea of what each considers she’sworth.

“As a woman, I don’t think of myself as awife or mother of a child, but rather as amother of the world. To me, a woman’sworth is to give service to society,” saysSukanya.

“Women have an abundance of warmth, af-fection and love. Men simply cannot behavelike us,” says Sirintip.

“Women are sensitive to problems that af-fect them both directly and indirectly. Ithink we should work towards getting rid ofthese problems so we can all face a happiertomorrow,” says Saranya.

“Most women are hardworking and pa-tient, both at home and at the office,” saysMaleewan.

“Men and women both have their individ-ual worth but that said, they each need tostick to their ethics,” says Haruthai.

“For me, women need to be helpful tothose that surround them as well as to socie-ty. We should not be judged on our looks orsocial standing but on our performance,”says Radklao.

Liu Restaurant, at the Conrad Bangkok is offering diners aspecial opportunity to sample the dim sum creations oftwo master chefs from the Golden Peony Restaurant inthe Conrad Centennial Singapore.

Continuing until this Sunday, chefs Chung Ho Shi andYiu Kit Lam are joining us from Singapore to present theirown style of dim sum, a fusion of tastes, textures andcolours, all of which are tiny bite-sized compositions.

To the surprise of some Thai diners, no dipping saucesare offered, and there’s no form of chilli sauce anywhere. Some of the dim sum are accompanied by their own verysubtle sauces, such as Golden Peony Dim Sum, a little“bird’s nest” of lightly fried noodles wrapped around awhole shrimp. Underneath is a very delicate kiwi mayon-naise that complements the little “nest” in both taste andcolour.

These are not dim sum that you swallow in one bite.Instead, you should keep one in your mouth to savour allthe combinations of flavours, pleasing your palate in a de-layed reaction.

Sauteed Chinese cabbage and dried shrimp with shrimppaste (slightly, very slightly salty), steamed crab clawwith egg white and fresh ginger (allowing the fresh tasteof the crab to come through), all these are lovingly pre-sented, much like a painting by a master artist.

One dim sum that’s sure to be popular is the chefs’version of barbecued suckling pig. All that taste in onemouthful.

Paired with the various dim sum are French winesfrom Chevalier Alexis Lichine (distributed in Thailandby Beverage One).

You can enjoy the dim sum created by Chefs Chungand Yiu at a set lunch (Bt680-Bt1,099) and the set din-ner (Bt1,280 and Bt1,680). A wine dinner (Bt2,580)will be offered on Friday.

In addition, the two chefs are even willing to re-veal their culinary secrets. On Saturday from 10am tonoon, they’re offering a cooking class, featuring steamedshark’s fin dumpling with minced shrimp, golden-friedprawn and radish served in orange sauce and pan-friedand skewered scallop siew mai

DPA, Madrid

From Madrid’s 35 degreeCelsius to Ireland’s 15: Real

Madrid packed their bags com-plete with warm clothing tocontinue their pre-season train-ing in Dublin, as the paparazzibegin to test the club’s securityplans for superstar CristianoRonaldo.

Real Madrid trained inMadrid on Monday beforeboarding a plane for Dublin.Players went running in the hotMadrid sun, but a chilly rainwas set to meet them upon ar-rival in Ireland.

They were set to spend ninedays at a luxury hotel near theIrish capital. All players will bepart of the group except forKaka, Iker Casillas, SergioRamos and Raul Albiol, whoseholiday was extended until July27 because they had long na-tional team duty this summerdue to the Confederations Cup.

The very presence ofPortuguese winger CristianoRonaldo was set to outshinemost of the Spanish giants’ ac-tivities. This is the first trip forRonaldo, 24, with the club thatmade him the most expensiveplayer in the world after payingManchester United £80 millionfor the winger.

Ronaldo knows that scores ofpaparazzi will be waiting forhim in Ireland. The Spanishsports daily Marca reported lastweek that some 40 British jour-nalists had made room reserva-tions at Carlton House, the ho-tel where the team is staying.

The residence is eight-cen-turies old and is located 22 kilo-metres outside Dublin.Personalities like Britain’sQueen Victoria or formerHollywood star and princess ofMonaco Grace Kelly havestayed there in the past.

Real Madrid were set to payover $850 for each room theyreserved. And there were set tobe plenty of those, since thereare currently 31 players in thesquad.

“We expect something quiet, although Ronaldo always gener-ates great anticipation. But weare all ready, and I’m sure therewill not be as much of a fuss aspeople think,” one clubspokesman said.

This should be a sort of re-hearsal for the security opera-

tions implemented by RealMadrid to protect their greatest

star from reporters and overex-cited fans alike.

Ireland awaited the arrival ofthe Portuguese winger and histeam-mates with great anticipa-tion. The Irish Independent not-ed that the world was focusingon Ronaldo and Real Madridcaptain Raul Gonzalez, whilethe BBC quoted hotel employ-ees as saying that they werevery happy to have Real Madridthere.

One of the highlights of theIrish training camp was set tobe a friendly game against theShamrock Rovers on Monday, likely to be Ronaldo’s debutgame with the Spanish giants’white shirt. This should also behis first game with another newstar at the club, FrenchmanKarim Benzema.

Madrid’s hugeclearance sale Real Madrid’s historic spend-ing spree has been suspend-ed, at least for the timebeing, as they turn theirattention to selling someunwanted players.

The Spanish giants tookPlanet Football by storm inJune, spending aroundUS$292.96 million, onCristiano Ronaldo, Kaka,Karim Benzema and RaulAlbiol. Now, according tosports dailies AS and Marcayesterday, Real presidentFlorentino Perez has made itclear that there will be nonew signings until at leastfive of the club’s manyunwanted players have beensold.

AS said that Perez hasgiven the club’s generaldirector Jorge Valdano untilJuly 27 to offload at leastsome of handful of the mis-fits from a bloated squadcurrently containing 32 play-ers. At the top of Real’s listof unwanted players, appar-ently, are Dutchmen KlaasJan Huntelaar, Rafael Vander Vaart, Royston Drenthe,Ruud Van Nistelrooy andArjen Robben.

Huntelaar is close to sign-ing for Germany’s VfBStuttgart, with AS Romaalso rumoured to be interest-ed.

New coach ManuelPellegrini said he would likeDutch midfielder WesleySneijder to stay, at the sametime as asking for a new full-back and two more midfield-ers. Other players unwantedat the Bernabeu include vet-eran defenders MichelSalgado and Gabriel Heinze, plus anchormanMahamadou Diarra.

However, most of theplayers on Valdano’s “hitlist”are reluctant to leave Madridbecause of their salaries.

Former England openerGeoff Boycott has blasted

Kevin Pietersen for behavinglike a “spoilt child” by gettinghimself out with an ill-judgedsweep shot in the drawn open-ing Ashes Test.

Pietersen’s offering of a gen-tle catch to Simon Katich off thebowling of Nathan Hauritzwhen on 69 infuriated Boycott, who vented his spleen.

“Pietersen is like a spoiltchild, the family favourite whocan get away with anything be-cause he is the golden boy,”Boycott charged.

“Until someone takes thetrouble to discipline him he willkeep making the same stupidmistakes over and over again.”

And Boycott indicatedEngland captain AndrewStrauss and coach Andy Flower

should sit down with the bats-man and set him straight.

“My concern is that there isno one in the England set upwho will go up to Pietersen andtell him that this is not goodenough,” Boycott said.

But he added: “AndrewStrauss and Andy Flower areboth quiet men and frankly I donot think they have got thecourage.”

Boycott insisted thatEngland’s batting as a whole left

much to be desired.“The trouble with England’s

batsmen is that they are one-di-mensional. They only want toplay with an attacking mentali-ty, and when they are presentedwith a situation that demands adifferent approach, they cannotadapt,” he opined.

Former England captainNasser Hussain attacked theteam’s time wasting tactics dur-ing the first Ashes Test againstAustralia as “amateur and em-barrassing to watch”.

Hussain said he supportedsubtle attempts at time wastingin order to win, but the blatanttactics used by AndrewStrauss’s team bordered on theridiculous and were bad for thesport. “It wasn’t a street wisemove at all, it was village greenstuff. It was amateur and em-barrassing to watch,” he said.

Padraig Harrington believes his experi-ence winning the British Open the lasttwo years will give him an advantageover almost everyone at Turnberry. Thehard part will be giving himself a chance. The Irishman is trying to become onlythe second player in the last century towin golf’s oldest championship threesuccessive years. He has won three ofthe last eight majors, the highest ratesince 2007 of any golfer, including TigerWoods.

The trouble is, Harrington hasobsessed so much with retooling hisswing that his game is out of sorts. Hehas missed five straight cuts on the USand European tours coming intoTurnberry, although he did capture theIrish PGA last week outside Dublin.

“The one thing I know is that if I getin position, I can win. That’s the nicething,” Harrington said. “Others can getthere, but they won’t win. So at least Ican do it if I can get into position.

“Can I get into position is what’s indoubt.”

Harrington is working with BobTorrance on his swing and with BobRotella on his brain. After a dismalspring, following by constant tinkering,he finally had what Harrington calls an“intervention” with his wife, caddie andRotella, with instructions to start com-peting instead of spending so muchtime on mechanics.

But it remains a work in progress.Harrington thought he turned the

corner last week when he played twopractice rounds at Turnberry, only to feelhis swing had deserted him at the IrishPGA, even though he won by sevenshots at The European Club against aweak field. “Golf is always – for me, any-way – a juggling act of keeping all theballs in the air and keeping everythingworking together,” he said. “And I’vealways concentrated on one ball a lotand a few of the other ones have fallenon the ground, and it’s a question ofpicking them up and getting them alltogether again.”
