More than half of the capi-tal’s parents are strug-

gling financially as their chil-dren head back to school, ac-cording to the BangkokUniversity’s Research Institute.

Of 1,073 parents in Bangkoksurveyed last week, 53.5 percent admitted they didn’t haveenough money to cover back-to-school expenses.

Loan sharks circle Many said they would have to

turn to friends or relatives forhelp. Others were consideringborrowing money from loansharks.

The survey found that theeconomic downturn is a majorfactor in parents’ money wor-ries. Of those polled, 21.7 percent say they are facing a finan-

cially tough time ahead of thenew semester for the first time.

Reduced income and a jumpin the price of learning materi-als are the main reasons theparents say they are runningout of money.

“Nearly half say that educa-tion expenses have risen whencompared with last year,” thesurvey says.

The findings seem to reflectwhat parents across the coun-try are facing.

In Si Sa Ket, the provincialpawn office has revealed that

their business peaks during theback-to-school season.

“A lot of people pawn theirvaluables at this time of theyear,” the office’s manager Vee-rasak Pannanua says. “After afew months when they haveearned some money, they showup to redeem their items.”

His office, he discloses, needsto prepare Bt160 million infunds to finance its service atthis time of the year.

“People come here to pawntheir gold ornaments, electricalappliances and silk,” Veerasaksays.

Speaking on condition ofanonymity, a parent of two sec-ondary school kids admits thatshe drops into the pawn officeahead of every new semester.

“Although the governmentwaives tuition fees and pro-vides some subsidies for text-books and uniforms, there areother educational expense tobe paid,” she says.

First facetransplantrevealedWhen her husband shot her fiveyears ago, Connie Culp was leftwithout a nose, a palate or lowereyelids, but on Tuesday sherevealed her new face.

Culp’s was the world’s firstnear-total facial transplant andthe fourth known facial trans-plant to have been successfullyperformed to date.

The 46-year-old mother oftwo underwent a procedure lastDecember that lasted 22 hours atthe Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Surgeons transplanted about80 per cent of Culp’s face usingfacial tissue from a dead womanthat was placed like a mask atopher own.

Almost her entire face wasreplaced, except for the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip and chin.

The team of 11 surgeons whoperformed the operation said Culp, who was missing bone supportand had been unable to eat orbreathe without a tube in herwindpipe, could now perform functions normally. But her facewas bloated, drooping and herspeech was at times difficult todecipher.

Her husband, Thomas, hadshot her at point-blank rangebefore turning the gun on himself. The apparent murder-suicideattempt failed and he was sen-tenced to seven years in prison.A F P

“I really didn’t think I stooda chance, to be honest,” he saidafter being selected from 16 fi-nalists from around the world.

“There were some greatpeople there and I was very, very surprised when my namewas called out at the end.”

Southall, who will live in aluxury three-bedroom beachhouse, will spend six monthsswimming, snorkelling andsailing around the tropicalparadise, earning A$150,000(Bt3.7 million) for bloggingabout his experiences and pro-moting the region to theworld.

“I’ve done lots of work forcharity. I’d like to continuethat,” he said.

“One of the charities I regu-

Char’s Fund is a memorial toCharlotte Jones, a 23-year-oldwho died on the Thai island of Ko Racha Yai in the tsuna-mi.

After snaring the so-called“Best Job in the World”,Southall laughed as he re-counted his worst job, as ateenager in Hampshire, south-ern England. “When I was 13to 15 years old I worked as afishmonger,” he said.

He said the selectionprocess on Hamilton Islandwas “surreal”.

They have Leonard Nimoy, and theyhave all the trappings, gadgets and crewmembers of the starship Enterprise.

Yet even for a franchise that grew to sixTV series and 10 previous movies, JJAbrams’ “Star Trek” is the wildestmakeover ever to Gene Roddenberry’s vi-sion of a future where humans have over-come their own squabbles and set out tomake new enemies among the stars.

Everything that came before in the“Trek” universe used Roddenberry’s1960s series as a launch point, so subse-quent movies and shows formed a gen-erally consistent history of the 21st to24th centuries.

Using a tried-and-true “Trek” trick –the alternate reality – Abrams and com-pany found a way to give Captain JamesKirk, First Officer Spock and their palsa new beginning and wide-open future.

“The key to this movie was to be in-spired by, embrace and honour every-thing that’s come before, but with thefirst scene in the movie, we say we aregoing somewhere else,” Abrams declares.

The filmmakers have sleekly updatedthe sets, costumes, props and effects. But fans will recognise the overall look, from the silhouette of the Enterprise tothe gold, blue and red uniforms that area throwback to the quaint outfits

Nimoy, William Shatner and their co-stars wore.

New faces, old namesAmong the new faces, including

Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quintoas Spock, fans will recognise a key play-er from the classic “Trek”. Nimoy re-turns as the older Spock, pursuedthrough time by a vengeful Romulan

(Eric Bana) aiming to wipe out the hu-man-led Federation.

Abrams, screenwriters Roberto Orciand Alex Kurtzman and their collabora-tors hit on an intelligent design to re-suscitate the franchise, Nimoy says. Thelast movie, 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis”,was a flop, and the prequel series“Enterprise” was cancelled in 2005amid dwindling ratings.

Nimoy thinks the franchise is backwhere it was in 1982, when “Star Trek II:The Wrath of Khan” provided a creativemakeover after “Star Trek: The MotionPicture” proved visually dazzling butdramatically sterile.

A day after he saw the new movie, theson of “Star Trek” creator Roddenberrysaid it did what it should do – broadenthe appeal while staying true to his fa-ther’s vision.

Hard-core fans might object, but “theyare a slice of the pie,” said Eugene “Rod”Roddenberry, whose mother, MajelBarrett, had recurring roles in “Trek”.“You have to strike a balance, and I think

JJ did a damn good job at that.”What would Roddenberry’s father,

who died in 1991, think of it?“He would have probably said to JJ,

‘You did it right. You brought it into2009 the way it should be done’.”

Aquick glance around film-maker Yongyooth

Thongkongtoon’s office isenough to reveal that the not-ed director and producerdoes indeed have a penchantfor collecting – toys of vari-ous shapes and sizes areperched on most of theshelves.

But ask him what kind oftoys he prefers, andYongyooth is stumped, though he readily admits thathe now owns more than 1,000items and that much of hiscollection is kept at his home.

It’s not so much about col-lecting, he explains, but moreabout revisiting childhoodmemories.

“There was never any mon-ey for toys when I was young,so when I started working, Ikept shelling out for them. Itstarted as a kind of

vengeance – a paybackfor poverty,” says thedirector with a smile.

However, he admitsthat the rationale nev-er really made sense, chuckling as he recallssending a messengerto McDonalds eachtime the burger chainreleased a new seriesof Happy Meal toys.“Now I have 20 draw-ers filled with HappyMeal collections and Inever play with them.”

He doesn’t regret collectingthe toys, though.

“For the price, the [HappyMeal] collections are of highquality. When you piece themtogether, the joints fit welltoo,” he says.

His fondest childhoodmemories are of Japanesecomic book figures and theKamen Raiders, so many ofthe toys in his collection are

Japanese gizmos. A particularfavourite is Astro Boy.

“I wasn’t a big fan of theAstro Boy comic but I like thecharacter. It’s one of my bestchildhood memories,” he says.

“I’ve also bought the UltraSeven Kamen riders becausethe characters and I wereborn the same year.”

Another prized possessionis a TOMY train set.

“I love playing with toysthat actually do somethingand now, when I have freetime, I can share these pleas-ures with my daughter,” saysthe director.

Other models are, as onemight expect, film-related,with items from “Lost”, “24”and “Star Wars”.

He stocks up when he visitsJapan, spending his free timewandering around thetoyshops in Harajuku andAkiharbara.

“Strolling around Akihabaratends to stress me out as I getthe urge to buy everything. The only way I can save mon-ey is by staying away from thearea,” he says.

But he is not an extremecollector and doesn’t lay outserious money for his toys. His most expensive purchaseis Bt5,000 – the price he paidfor his favourite Astro Boymodel.

I swim and play tennisand soccer three times aweek but since last week,I’ve had pain in my knee. Afriend says this probably amuscle-tendon injury. What should I do?

The muscle and tendonswork together as units.Injuries can affect muscle bel-ly, muscle-tendon junction, the tendon itself, and the in-sertion of the tendon to thebone. Muscles can be dam-aged both by direct trauma(impact) and by indirect trau-ma (overloading). Muscle in-

juries are usually benign butoften annoying and inade-quate treatment can result ina long absence from anysporting activity. Strain iscaused by over-stretching ofmuscles or tendons.Contusions occur as result ofdirect impact, such as when aplayer’s knee hits another’sthigh during a soccer game. When injuries occur, there isinevitably some degree ofbleeding followed by pain andthen the inflammatoryprocess.

A sharp or stabbing pain isfelt when the injured muscle-

tendon contract. Usuallythere is little pain providingthe muscle is rested. After 24hours, bruising and discol-oration may be seen (a sign ofbleeding in the injured mus-cles).

The initial treatment is rest, bandaging the injured part, cooling the affected area withice, elevating the limb and re-lieving the load on the injuredpart. This should be donewithin the first 24 to 72 hours.Muscle exercises should onlycommence after at least twobut preferably five days ofrest.

If you’re overweight andhave decided to work out

regularly, it may be wise tosee a doctor before you coughup for a gym membership.

If you don’t have that muchweight to lose, are relativelyyoung, don’t have a disabilityand are in overall good health, you probably can safely skip ahealth check. But if you’re se-verely overweight or have di-abetes or a family history ofheart disease, you shouldcheck in with a doctor beforegetting that heart rate toohigh.

A trip to a general practi-tioner probably will result intests of cholesterol, triglyc-erides, blood pressure andblood sugar – all linked toheart health, a key componentof exercise. If the numbersare out of the normal range, medication might be in order. The ultimate goal is to man-age conditions with exerciseand diet, eventually loweringor getting off medication alto-gether.

A doctor might recommendmild to moderate workouts ifyour numbers aren’t in a dan-ger zone, but he or she alsomight want to stabilise someconditions before letting youlace up your sneakers. To be

on the safe side, begin an ex-ercise regimen slowly –maybe with a walk around theblock, some light pool work-outs, or low-resistance ped-alling on a recumbent bike(best to do it with a buddy tobe safe).

If you experience shortnessof breath, weakness, dizzinessor chest pain, stop immedi-

ately and seek medical care.Once you’re at the clinic of

hospital, you don’t need to re-quest every test under thesun. A doctor is likely to startwith the basics: checking cho-lesterol and triglyceride lev-els, measuring blood pressureand body fat, and testing fordiabetes. More serious tests, such as a cardiac stress test

done on a treadmill, will onlybe prescribed if coronary ar-tery disease is suspected, toguard against severe exerciserepercussions such as a heartattack. And if you see no endto the lose-gain-lose-gainrollercoaster, consider seek-ing more intensive help, suchas at a comprehensive obesitycentre.

So much about Tiger Woodsafter major knee surgery

looks the same. He won the Arnold Palmer

Invitational with a birdie putton the last hole that everyoneknew he was going to make.Even when his swing was out ofsorts last week at Quail Hollow,he somehow was in the thick ofcontention until the final twoholes.

But this is not the same TigerWoods.

He is missing his power, whether it’s off the tee with adriver or from the fairway withirons that are sometimes twomore clubs than what he usedbefore surgery last June to re-build his left knee.

The power shortage was nev-er more evident than the finalround of the Masters, playingwith Phil Mickelson, whenWoods usually was the first tohit from the fairway. Even his ri-val couldn’t help but notice.

“I kept having to wait for him to hit,” Mickelson

jokingly said yesterday. That wasn’t the case the last

time they played together atAugusta National, the finalround in 2001, when on someholes Woods hit it farther witha 3-wood than Mickelson didwith a driver.

More evidence came lastweek at Quail Hollow.

By measuring drives on the56 holes that were not par 3s,Mickelson’s average tee shotwas nearly 14 yards longer thanWoods’. Statistics can be mis-leading, especially over the firsttwo rounds because theyplayed on opposite ends of thedraw. But in the third round, when they were separated byone group, Mickelson waslonger off the tee on 11 of the 14driving holes. Mickelson’s aver-age drive was 317.6 yards,Woods was at 300.5 yards.

Woods has an answer for hissudden loss of length.

“I’ve been away from thegame for a long time,” he saidon Tuesday, referring to hiseight-month layoff after the USOpen. “And it’s going to take alittle bit of time before my bodygets back to where I can hit theball the same distances. I don’thit the ball the same distance

with my irons or my driver.” What he doesn’t have an an-

swer for is when he will get itback.

“Hopefully, soon,” he said. Woods said at Quail Hollow

that he was just starting to getsome “pop” back in the swing, which had been missing earlier. He spoke about the rotation re-quired to generate speed in hisswing, and the importance ofnot stretching the ligament.

Is Tiger shorter? Or is Phil longer? Mickelson has always been

more infatuated with lengththan Woods, although Woods’aura has been built aroundpower.

Woods is having to make dowith less at the moment, whichis OK with him. He has been ex-perimenting with differentshafts and lengths of his driver, although he keeps going back towhat he had.

The Players Championshipwill be the fourth straight tour-nament that Mickelson has achance to replace Woods at No1 in the world ranking.Mickelson would have to winand have Woods finish worsethan fourth place alone for thatto happen.

Alex Ferguson believesManchester United are hit-

ting peak form at just the righttime to extend their reign aschampions of Europe.

Ferguson’s side swept intothe Champions League final forthe second successive seasonwith a ruthless 3-1 victory overArsenal in Tuesday’s semi-finalsecond leg at the EmiratesStadium. United are just 90minutes away from becomingthe first team in the ChampionsLeague era to successfully de-fend Europe’s top club prize.

Victory in Rome againstChelsea or Barcelona on May 27would be the culmination of acampaign that has already in-cluded Club World Cup andLeague Cup triumphs and islikely to feature a third consec-utive Premier League crown.

But Ferguson knows the po-tentially glorious finale couldhave been so different if Unitedhadn’t bounced back from de-feats to Liverpool and Fulham.

“We had a blip when we lostto Liverpool and Fulham andwe got a break against AstonVilla when we won in the lastminute but since then the formhas been back,” Ferguson said.

“I think we are at ourstrongest at the moment. Youhave to remember that the teamhas just been put together thelast two or three years, it does-n’t happen overnight.

““Good players will always bejudged by the belief they have. What was good for me was that

everyone played for each other– there were no individual per-formances above the rest.”

Ferguson measures the valueof a season by United’s per-formance in Europe these daysas he tries to establish themalongside the likes of RealMadrid, AC Milan andLiverpool as the continent’smost successful clubs.

United would join BayernMunich and Ajax on fourEuropean Cups if they win thisyear’s competition andFerguson believes his playershave the desire to do it.

“From the club’s point ofview, we should have won thiscup more times and it’s anotheropportunity for us,” Fergusonsaid. “Hopefully we can do it

again. We have the quality, en-ergy and ambition to do it againand it’s a hungry team. Whenthe chips are down, they don’tlet me down.”

While Ferguson savoured oneof his greatest European victo-ries, he also found time to con-sole Arsenal manager ArseneWenger – for so long a bitter ri-val of the United boss but now amuch closer friend.

Ferguson said: “I know exact-ly how he feels. When you workas hard as he does he deservessuccess. “The problem forArsene Wenger and myself isthat the longer you are in thegame the more labels are at-tached to you. If you are notwinning you are useless, if youare winning you’re great.”

Arsenal manager ArseneWenger has described his

side’s 3-1 defeat by ManchesterUnited in the second leg oftheir Champions League semi-final as the worst of his career.

Arsenal were humbled athome by the holders onTuesday night with two goalsinside the first 11 minutes asUnited cruised to a 4-1 aggre-gate victory. Their exit meansfor the fourth season in a row,

Arsenal will be without a tro-phy. “It [was] the most disap-pointing night of my career,”Wenger said.

“I felt the fans were really upfor a big night and to disap-point people who stand behindthe team so much hurts.”

“The most difficult thing isthat we do not have a feelingthat we played a semi-final ofthe Champions League.

“We were out of it after 10minutes and we had 80 min-

utes to play against a team whodefend well and wait to count-er-attack. We were in a posi-tion where we had to take allthe gamble after having startedquite well.

“I must say we can only lookat ourselves. It is very disap-pointing to fight to get such along way and to give the gameaway like we did.”

Mistakes from Kieran Gibbsand Manuel Almunia gaveUnited their 2-0 lead but

Wenger said his side shouldtake collective responsibility.

“We do not want to blameanyone individually,” he said.“In three minutes we concededtwo goals and it was too much.

“We were ready for a fightand the game but after 10 min-utes it was impossible. We keptgoing and we did as much aswe could. We played withpride and desire but of coursesome part of the belief hadgone.”

Vikings make raid for veteran quarterbackAP, Minneapolis

Just when Brett Favre lookedto finally be out of the NFL,

the Minnesota Vikings couldbe pulling him back in.

Citing an anonymous source“with direct knowledge of thediscussions between the twoparties,” ESPN reported yester-day that Favre is scheduled tomeet with Vikings coach BradChildress this week about apossible comeback.

Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, didnot immediately return aphone call to his Mississippioffice left by the AssociatedPress. Childress and Vikingsspokesman Bob Hagan also didnot immediately return mes-sages.

Both Favre and Cook havesaid this spring that Favre in-tends to stay retired. But

Favre’s statement after he wasreleased by the New York Jetslast week left the door open.

“At this time, I am retiredand have no intention of re-turning to football,” he said.

Those three little words – “At

this time” – set off rampantspeculation that he was indeedconsidering a second return toaction.

Childress said on Friday hehad been too busy to concen-trate on Favre, but did ac-

knowledge the subject wouldsoon be broached.

Favre spent 16 seasons inGreen Bay, retiring in 2008 af-ter leading the Packers to theNFC title game. He changedhis mind a few months later, which set up a long and messysoap opera that ultimately ledto his trade to the Jets.

It was believed all along thatFavre, after hearing GreenBay’s plans to go with AaronRodgers at quarterback, want-ed to come to NFC North rivalMinnesota so he could exactsome revenge on the Packers.

But the Packers would havenone of it. The team filed tam-pering charges against theVikings, alleging impropercontact between Favre andVikings’ Darrell Bevell, a friendof Favre.

Ex-Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre may go to Minnesota.
